Intel released mid-quarter upbeat guidance after the closing bell, and the anticipation of that event got investors in a buying mood. The Semiconductor Industry Association raised its 2002 sales forecast to a growth of 20.5%, up from earlier projections of growth of 10%. The result was that semiconductors, hardware makers, and software developers all moved to the upside in moderately light volume. Investors and analysts alike were pleased at the news however, suggesting that the markets are gaining strength. From a Reuters report "Even though the earnings that are going to come out in this next quarter are pretty weak, there's a sense that maybe tech land is bottoming out," said Michelle Clayman, chief investment officer at New Amsterdam Partners.

Cutting a fast path to semiconductors
With special synthesis and processing, algorithms turn into silicon-but keep an eye on hardware
Richard Goering

(04/18/2005 10:00 AM EDT)
URL: http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=160901343 So you have an algorithm or a compute-intensive function you want to implement in hardware. Does that mean you have to go through the traditional ASIC design flow, writing register-transfer-level VHDL or Verilog? Not at all, say an increasing number of providers of electronic system-level design and silicon intellectual property. But neither a magical nor 100 percent pushbutton solution exists. Most often, the move to higher levels of abstraction means making trade-offs in area, performance or quality-of-results and learning new methodologies and tools.

Philips Semiconductors donates equipment for ECS electronics students
Denis Nicole, Tim Forcer, Simon Quin, and Nick Dance In an initiative that will be of great value to electronics students, Philips Semiconductors Southampton have provided a set of hardware development tools to the School of Electronics and Computer Science. The equipment will be used by undergraduate students in project work. ‘This is a very generous donation to our students,’ said Tim Forcer, who runs the School’s Electronics Teaching Labs. ‘It will extend the range of work that can be undertaken in our labs, and offer new opportunities for development projects.’ Simon Quin, Software Systems Specialist from Philips Semiconductors, visited ECS to hand over the equipment: ‘As an engineer I can tell you that there is no substitute for using the real tools. Philips is keen to encourage students and help broaden and deepen their learning opportunities.’ MEng Computer Engineering student Nick Dance is especially grateful for the donation: ‘I’m building a Secure HTTP server that runs independently of the host computer over USB,’ he said. ‘The microcontroller it uses to run the web server and SSL layer is an 8051 clone for which Philips have donated eight In-Circuit Emulation (ICE) units with fully-integrated Keil C compilers. The ICE equipment will be used primarily for debugging and hardware testing although it can be used to replace the processor altogether if the hardware is unavailable. I will use the compiler to program all the software for the system.

Summary
The TRON Project has established the T-Engine Project in order to promote an open, real-time standardized development environment with the aim of achieving a ubiquitous computing environment where everything has a computer incorporated in it and is connected to a network. T-Engine offers an efficient development environment for the development of portable information devices, home electronic appliances and other network devices in a short period of time. The TRON Project's network security architecture, eTRON, has also been incorporated in T-Engine. This eTRON subarchitecture is intended to prevent tapping, falsification, and disguise of malicious users so that electronic information can be safely delivered to the other party through insecure network channels such as the Internet. For efficient development, the hardware (T-Engine board) and real-time operating system (T-Kernel) are standardized and distribution of middleware are encouraged. Moreover, T-Engine is able to smooth cooperation among chip makers, hardware makers, software makers and system manufacturers, encourage mutual business dealings, reduce development time and cost, thus enabling high value added product offerings in a short period of time. The combination of advanced semiconductors, packaging and software technlogies in T-Engine makes it suitable and unrivaled for the development of advanced application products. Participation has also been declared by various hardware, software, and/or system development makers. The actual T-Engine products are scheduled to put on the market in the second quarter of 2002.
