    The Inter-IC bus, commonly known as the I²C ("eye-squared-see") bus, is a control bus that provides the communications link between integrated circuits in a system. Developed by Philips in the early 1980s, this simple two-wire bus with a software-defined protocol has evolved to become the de facto worldwide standard for system control, finding its way into everything from temperature sensors and voltage level translators to EEPROMs, general-purpose I/O, A/D and D/A converters, CODECs, and microprocessors of all kinds.
    Philips currently offers more than 400 and continues to add 40-50 new devices yearly.

    Combination of New MIPS-Based Chipset, Philips Software Tools and Windows CE Provides Handheld PC Manufacturers With a Powerful, Comprehensive Reference Architecture Eindhoven - Sept. 16, 1996 - Philips Semiconductors today announced that its TwoChipHCG*, PR31500 and UCB1100 chipset and software fax/modem for handheld PCs (HPCs), personal digital assistants (PDAs), personal intelligent communicators, and other smart communication products will support the new Microsoft Windows CE operating system.     So you have an algorithm or a compute-intensive function you want to implement in hardware. Does that mean you have to go through the traditional ASIC design flow, writing register-transfer-level VHDL or Verilog? Not at all, say an increasing number of providers of electronic system-level design and silicon intellectual property. But neither a magical nor 100 percent pushbutton solution exists. Most often, the move to higher levels of abstraction means making trade-offs in area, performance or quality-of-results and learning new methodologies and tools. EE Times' "Easy Paths to Silicon" seminar at last month's Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco heard a number of alternatives to the traditional RTL ASIC design flow. The discussions covered C-language synthesis for ASICs and FPGAs, application-engine synthesis, coprocessor synthesis, application-specific processors and configurable processors.
