Self-Paced Mac Programming
By Joe Pillera, MacTutor Contributing Editor, Environmental Research, Institute of Michigan
Introduction
Selecting a course from the menu
Refer to Figure 1: MPF uses Hypercard as a front end, to make navigation throughout different parts of the course easy and intuitive. As can be seen from the illustration, MPF covers the following ROM managers in detail, in order to allow you to construct a completely functional draw program (called Target) when you complete the course: Control Manager Print Manager Event Manager Quick Draw File Manager Resource Manager Memory Manager Standard File Package Menu Manager Window Manager
Making the grade
Animated homework
Show Me is so thorough, it simulates exactly how a professional Mac programmer would solve the problem - all the way from double clicking on the THINK C application to cutting and pasting source code to solve the problem. Even the THINK C compile process is simulated - to give you the feeling an instructor is doing all the work right at your keyboard. Someone really put a lot of effort into this feature.

Journal of Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines
Wolfgang Banzhaf
Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada
Editor-in-Chief The journal of Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines is devoted to reporting innovative and significant progress in automatic evolution of software and hardware. Methods for artificial evolution of active components, such as programs or machines are rapidly developing branches of adaptive computation and adaptive engineering. They entail the development, evaluation and application of methods that mirror the process of neo-Darwinian evolution and produce as result computational expressions such as algorithms or machines such as mechanical or electronic devices that actively process environmental information and transform their environment. In addition to its main topics, the journal covers related topics such as evolutionary algorithms with variable-size genomes, alternate methods of program induction, approaches to engineering systems development based on embryology, morphogenesis or other techniques inspired by adaptive natural systems.
Methods:
Genetic Programming; Variable-size evolutionary algorithms; Induction of algorithms and symbolic expressions by iterative and non-deterministic search; Evolutionary design and Optimization of electronic circuits and mechanical devices; On-line adaptation of hardware and software; Evolutionary robotics; DNA computing; Coevolutionary techniques; meta-learning; Hybrid systems; Cellular and Developmental approaches.

Self Employment: Even on a Good Day Things are Hard
This essay will help you understand why I want to get out of software consulting , even though it can be high paying work. Michael D. Crawford
GoingWare Inc.

May 6, 2005 Nobody ever hires a software consultant because they have some easy coding they need done. The best I can hope for is that they need me because none of their in-house staff has the relevant skillset. Sometimes, though, they give me the work because it's beyond any of their abilities: One client gave me what they called "a test of my skills", a first job "just to see how good" I was. It was a custom database. Not SQL programming: a whole new database , written from scratch in C++, from the storage format, queries, sorting, searching, and editing. They needed it written from scratch because they had very unusual needs. For reasons which are hard to explain, it had a recursively-defined variable-length record structure. That is, fields in the database could be records, and fields in those records could be more records. It wasn't a server, it only needed to be used by one process, an online futures trading decision support system.

An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming in Python
By Michael Orr
Somebody asked Michael Williams if he could do Python and Java versions of his article An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming in C++ . Here's a Python version of the code. I'll comment on the differences between C++ and Python. Perhaps somebody else can write a Java version? I am assuming you know the basics of Python. If not, see the excellent Tutorial and the other documentation at http://www.python.org/doc/

To represent Michael's house (in section Classy! in the C++ article), we can use the following code: ( text version If we run it, it prints: My house is number 40 It has 8 rooms It has a garden What does this program do? First, we define what a generic house is in the class block. pass means "do nothing" and is required if the block would otherwise be empty. Then we create an instance (that is, a particular house) by calling the class name as if it were a function. The house is then stored in the variable This house initially has no attributesif we were to query my_house.number

Most writers, even science fiction writers, tend to reflect in their writing the status quo of the era in which they live. But the plot choices Vinge made in "A Deepness in the Sky" primarily, his decision to make the novel a "prequel" to "A Fire Upon the Deep" plunged him into a unique quandary. During the seven years Vinge spent writing "A Deepness in the Sky," the rate of technological change in his own world accelerated. But Vinge was reluctant to let real-world technological change contaminate his fiction: To do so, he worried, would run the risk of incorporating massive inconsistencies in his future-history timeline. For example, readers might find it strange to encounter an analog to the World Wide Web in "A Deepness in the Sky" when the best that "A Fire Upon the Deep" could manage was a lame incarnation of Usenet. "I had a big problem," says Vinge. "I had to back off from certain things, like anything Internet-like. It was a very big challenge, but it was fun."

The Quine Page
One day, several years ago, I came across an article in an old Byte on "self-reproducing programs". I was a curious lad, and looked to see what the article was about. It said, "Listing 1 is a C program which duplicates itself. When the program is run it produces (on the standard output) a file containing an exact copy of its own source code". I was hooked immediatelythese guys must be geniuses! I copied the article at once, and tried to figure it out, but I didn't know C at the time. Soon after, I found another article, this one in Creative Computing. It had listings in BASIC, and I was ecstatic. I soon realized that anyone could write self-reproducing programs, and made a few in BASIC, Pascal, and Forth.
Later that year I finally got a PC, and quickly forgot about the programs I had written on my old TI-994/A. Then, last year, as I was skimming through the Jargon file, I saw an entry I had not noticed before: quine kwi:n n. / [from the name of the logician Willard van Orman Quine, via Douglas Hofstadter] A program that generates a copy of its own source text as its complete output. Devising the shortest possible quine in some given programming language is a common hackish amusement. Here is one classic quine: ((lambda (x) (list x (list (quote quote) x))) (quote (lambda (x) (list x (list (quote quote) x))))) This one works in LISP or Scheme. It's relatively easy to write quines in other languages such as Postscript which readily handle programs as data; much harder (and thus more challenging!) in languages like C which do not. Here is a classic C quine for ASCII machines:

Event Driven Programming
What will we cover?
  • How does an event driven program differ from a batch program?
  • How to write an event loop
  • How to use an event framework such as Tkinter
So far we have been looking at batch oriented programs. Recall that programs can be batch oriented , whereby they start, do something then stop, or event driven where they start, wait for events and only stop when told to do so - by an event. How do we create an event driven program? We'll look at this in two ways - first we will simulate an event environment then we'll create a very simple GUI program that uses the operating system and environment to generate events.
Simulating an Event Loop
Every event driven program has a loop somewhere that catches received events and processes them. The events may be generated by the operating environment, as happens with virtually all GUI programs or the program itself may go looking for events as is often the case in embedded control systems such as used in cameras etc. We will create a program that looks for precisely one type of event - keyboard input - and processes the results until some quit event is received. In our case the quit event will be the space key. We will process the incoming events in a very simple manner - we will simply print the ASCII code for that key. We'll use Python for this because it has a nice, easy to use function for reading keys one at a time - . This function comes in two varieties depending on the operating system you use. If you are using Linux it's found in the

Python on Your (S60) Phone
by John Littler Just before Christmas 2004, Nokia put up a version of Python to run on Symbian Series 60 phones. While this is cool just because, is it also useful? Nokia describes its purpose as one of prototyping, teaching, and application development. The prospective audience is application developers who want to use the "native features and resources of the Series 60 phones."

RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE SYSTEMS BASIC SELF-DEFENSE COURSE for Women Now offered for FREE at Brown University! R.A.D (Rape Aggression Defense) is a nationally known self defense program. R.A.D's program objective is to develop and enhance the options of self defense so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked. The program consists of lecture, discussion, instruction, and hands-on simulation. This dynamic program has the ability to empower ANY woman by providing her the skills necessary to avoid, resist, and defend against an attack. National resistance statistics show that women do fight back instinctively during an attack. R.A.D. strives to cultivate that internal, self-preservation instinct so that women are knowledgeable of both risk-reduction and avoidance strategies, as well as hands-on resistance strategies. This program also educates women that survival comes in many forms, and that compliance is also an option. The course is 12 hours , and will be offered with6- 1.5 hour classes. The last 3-hours of the course entails an evening simulation exercise, where you actually employ the techniques and skills you have learned against trained simulators, in a controlled environment. The course is suitable for women of all physical abilities, and you will be encouraged to go at your own pace. You do not have to attend all 12 hours, but it would be to your benefit to do so.
