Self-programming computers
Computers are really dumb. They can only do what we, poor hard working developers, tell them to do. Never come up with an idea themselves. Wouldn't it be much easier if computers could just program themselves? Our life would be a lot easier.
Every now and then we can go check up on the computer, see how the software development is progressing, and for the rest do nothing and be paid for the computer's work.
Hopefully the computer would even do a better job than we can do ourselves. Fortunately, the solution now seems to be there.
The Goedel Machine can change every aspect of it's own software. Including the algorithms that make the changes etc.
You can run this type of software on any computer.

Personality Modification: Technique #1, verbal self-programming By Midnight Writer (emdoub@visi.com) Okay - I've had it with the angst.
I've gotten a lot of email on this topic - mostly, requests for the techniques, all promising to be careful with them. Some of the email was giving me different POVs on the ethics involved in making these techniques public.
Many thanks to the person who asked me how I'd feel if I'd heard that someone was trying to keep, say, an unusual flogger technique under wraps, because it took moderate skill to keep it from being dangerous.
I've been focused on freedom of information for a long time - I just had to have someone point out to me that it means me, too.
So, I'll be posting on the techniques - from easy/safe onward to the difficult/can easily be misused. First, however, I'll have my say on the ethics and morality of psychological manipulation of others.
It happens daily, often without clear informed consent. Madison Avenue is probably the worst offender - much more effective than most governments. Governments come in second place - and they're usually targeting their own citizens, not the neighbors. (Yes, I know about Radio Free Europe and the many other times that Gov'ts use propaganda on non-residents, but that's nothing compared to what gov'ts do to their own citizens.)

Wednesday, 07/21/04 Hehe, just to show that i'm not completely neglecting this homepage i've just finally updated/rewritten the oh-so-informative About-Me page for the over-curious people who have nothing better to do than to read about-me pages from strangers on the internet ;)
Saturday, 07/10/04 Hmm i'm too lazy...3 months and no updates...sorry :)
But i have some important exams during the summer, so i guess it will take another few months until i have the motivation to spend time for something worth to put here...sorry again :)
Wednesday, 04/07/04 Been a long time since the last update...sorry :) Only thing new for the site is a greatly extended links page Other than that i've just been enjoying my holidays and learned C# and .Net, both of which impressed me alot. C# has actually become my new favourite language, and i've begun work on a little tool with it, which you can expect to see here sometime in the future, if i actually get around to finish it :)

Self-Programming of Hearing Aids
By Curtis Dickinson
I and several others have programmed our own hearing aids. We all believe it IS worth the learning curve. There are many of us who have the will to do the same but do not have the means. Money is not necessarily the problem here. . The first problem is getting the programming software and equipment. Much is proprietary. It just is not made available for non-sellers of hearing aids. The second problem is getting access to hearing aids without having to go through a middleman/audiologistwith their mark-up as high as 400% I will bet my last thin dime that if we had access to the above, many more people would have hearing aids which would lower the statistical rate of only 20% of the millions of consumers who need them actually have them. This would drop precipitously by putting hearing aids onto the open market. This fosters another dismal statistic, that 46% of those using hearing aids are not satisfied with them. This too could change precipitously with self-programming. Self-programming gives us the control we need to help our hearing loss. Currently we get tired of going to and fro with the audiologist who, at some point, could very well say, "Get used to it." If there was an open market of hearing aids and programming equipment, we would NOT bad-mouth the sellers or wonder if they knew what they were doing. We would not feel guilty for our unforgiving hearing loss. We would all feel better when we have an open source of information about the hundreds of hearing aids available and the means to program them ourselves. Even the audiologists could be more honest with themselves and to us.

We list four dismal statistics of hearing aid sales that provides insight to what is wrong with the current protocol of dispensing hearing aids:
  • Only 20% of those who could benefit from hearing aids use them. This means millions of consumers do not have hearing aids but could benefit from them. ( www.hohadvocates.org Home page, bottom.)
  • Empirical data indicates that nearly 20% of workable hearing aids lie in bureau drawers, factoring to 100,000's of unused aids. ( www.hohadvocates.org home page, bottom)
  • Over 2/3 of the states have laws allowing an audiologist to keep up to 10% of retail cost of any hearing aid returned during a trial period. California has a law that explicitly requires all money to be returned when a hearing aid is returned during the trial period. From http://www.dca.ca.gov/hearingaid/consumer/songbev.htm If the buyer returns the device within the 30-day period, the seller is required, without charge and within a reasonable time, to adjust, repair or replace the device. If, after the adjustment, repair or replacement, the device is still not specifically fit for the buyer's particular needs, the device may be returned for a refund of the total amount paid including all payments and any trade-in exchanged as part of the transaction.
