Home ... About AVO > Seismology Seismology - the Alaska Volcano Observatory: AVO maintains networks of seismometers on a subset of Alaskan volcanoes. The networks consist of a few to several short-period vertical and three-component instruments. Data is passed in near-real time through radio telemetry and telephone lines to recording and analysis laboratories at UAFGI and USGS-Anchorage.
Seismology lab, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Geophysical Institute. Typically, the reawakening of a volcano can be seen by the increased rate of background seismicity over a period of months or weeks as new magma works its way upward beneath the volcano, displacing and breaking the countryrock. (Volcanic earthquakes are typically quite small - with maximum magnitudes of 2 or 3). As the eruption nears, seismologists may see a unique type of volcano seismic activity (called long-period events) associated with degassing of the rising magma. Finally, as an eruption begins, the strong seismic signals generated by the explosive eruption itself can bee seen. This permits accurate determination of the time of onset of an eruption, even in the dark or during poor weather, which is critical information for agencies concerned with the safe operation of aircraft above and many hundreds of kilometers downwind from the volcanoes. Seismic activity is monitored in real time at 27 volcanoes in Alaska: Wrangell, Spurr, Redoubt, Iliamna, Augustine, Snowy, Griggs, Katmai, Novarupta, Trident, Mageik, Martin, Aniakchak, Veniaminof, Pavlof, Dutton, Isanotski, Shishaldin, Fisher, Westdahl, Akutan, Makushin, Okmok, Great Sitkin, Kanaga, Tanaga, and Gareloi volcanoes. Many seismometers are located on each of these volcanoes and the data is telemetered to Anchorage and Fairbanks in real time for processing and analysis.

    The prime objectives of the Seismology Division of the GII are to increase the knowledge about the earthquake phenomena in our region and provide accurate information about the regional seismic activity. The main research topics currently under investigation are:
    Earthquake hazards and risk assessments for the state of Israel and surrounding countries, including the development of methods and procedures for preparing realistic earthquake scenarios.
    Three dimensional modeling of the crust structure over the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean using calibration shots and well determined earthquake source parameters.
    Development of software for seismic data acquisition and processing.
    Determination of seismic parameters for the assessment of earthquake hazards, including analytical and experimental estimations of seismic site-response and amplification effects from recordings of microtremors, weak earthquakes and strong motions;
    Modeling of the seismotectonics of the Dead Sea transform using seismic reflection, relocation and source parameter analysis of recent earthquakes, and paleoseismological investigation.

    http://www.geology.cwu.edu/dept/about_geo.html
    About the Department of Geological Sciences
    Central Washington University
    The Department of Geological Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the geological sciences. Emphasis is placed upon stimulating classroom, laboratory, and field experiences with dynamic faculty members whose teaching and research interests span the spectrum of geological problems.
    PRIMARY RESEARCH
    The department has expertise in active and regional tectonics, continental dynamics, environmental geochemistry, geomorphology, isotope geochemistry, GPS geodesy, mineralogy, paleohydrology, paleoseismology, petrology, Quaternary geology, seismology, structural geology, thermochronology, and volcanology. The department has recently hired three new faculty members who specialize in regional tectonics, continental dynamics and seismology, isotope geochemistry, petrology, structural geology, and volcanology. The department is the data analysis center for the Pacific Northwest Geodetic Array (PANGA), which is a permanent network of GPS receivers that continuously measure crustal motions in the Pacific Northwest. A modern geochemistry laboratory , equipped for isotopic, major-element, and trace-element analysis of earth materials, as well as installation of new ICP and stable isotope mass spectrometers, has just been completed. The department is a member of the Southern California Earthquake Center, a NSF-sponsored Science and Technology Center; we also members of the WINSAR (INSAR imagery) and IRIS (seismology) consortiums. In addition, the department has strong ties with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), administered by the California Institute of Technology for NASA; the opportunity to participate in JPL programs is a unique feature of the geology program at CWU.
