Customer Review: Perhaps one of the best known social engineers is Kevin Mitnick. He was a master of the game, that is until he was caught. Sent to prison, and barred from using computers and the Internet for years because of his actions, he emerged a reformed man and set out to educate companies and users how to best protect themselves. One of his efforts, in collaboration with William L. Simon, was the 2002 book entitled The Art of Deception (368 Pages, J. Wiley, ISBN 076454280X). Since I was getting ready to read his new book (The Art of Intrusion), I wanted to read and review this title first so I would have context for his stories. Without I doubt, I am glad I did and this book is now on my "must read" recommendations list. ...

A Brief Overview of Securities Fraud
By Aaron Larson
Law Offices of Aaron Larson
July, 2004 In general terms, securities fraud involves the use of deceptive practices in the securities market. For most people, this means that they will be enticed to invest in securities, such as stocks and bonds, by statements or promises which are untrue or intentionally misleading. However, securities fraud can be committed not only by the issues of securities, or by securities traders and brokers, but also by individual investors. Examples of securities fraud include:
  • Submitting false or incomplete information on filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Including false information on a company financial statement Insider trading - making securities trades based upon certain "inside information" not available to the general public. Manipulating stock values Conduct by securities brokers and dealers meant to mislead or defraud individual investors.

Online Securities Fraud
By Aaron Larson

July, 2004 Securities fraud , in general terms, is the use of deceptive practices in the securities market. With the rise of the Internet, those who wish to engage in securities fraud have expanded into the world of email and websites, and have demonstrated a great deal of creativity and ingenuity in their efforts to cheat would-be investors out of their money. Don't feel secure just because you are an experienced investor. Many people with years of investment experience have been taken in by these scams.
The Fictitious Security
One particularly brazen scam involves the creation of an investment opportunity which exists nowhere but on the Internet, often with promises of extraordinary rates of return or "risk free" investment. The fake investment opportunity may have an associated website which looks very genuine, with photographs, documents, investor endorsements, and other evidence to suggest that the opportunity is real. Searches of the Internet may reveal a wide range of other websites and newsgroup posts endorsing the investment. After investors are enticed to purchase shares or otherwise invest, the people behind the opportunity disappear. Investors then learn that all of the pictures and evidence they saw was fake.
Fake Stock Tips
In order to try to artificially inflate the value of stocks, often stocks with little or no real value. Most of the people taken in by the fake tips will suffer a loss. These tips are often distributed in the following manners:

How many ways are there to be cheated Shall I count the ways? Well... No one can! There can be as many ways to cheat investors as there are swindlers, con artists, and unscrupulous brokers... and there are quite a few of those out there! When you invest your hard earned money with a stockbroker, you do so with a level of trust, and this trust is backed up with strong legal protections to protect your interests. Nevertheless, investment and broker fraud is all too common.

Securities/Commodities Fraud Video Text
Wheeling and dealing has been a movie plot staple for generations, and real-life trading and securities and commodities can be just as dramatic. Wall Street in New York and the Mercantile Exchange in Chicago, spiraling growth in these markets has led to unparalleled opportunities for investment and for fraud. Market frauds are committed by a host of players: investors, brokers, shareholders and big-time investment bankers like Ivan Boesky, Michael Milken. Wherever fraud involves large-scale insider trading or a penny stock manipulation, fooling the public is key to the crime. The FBI, working with the Securities and Exchange Commission and other agencies, executed undercover investigations like Penticon, which targeted stock manipulation in Denver, and Sour Mash, a case that shocked the Chicago Mercantile Exchange after undercover agents posing as traders exposed rampant and widespread fraud in the commodities trading pits. In the case of national securities fraud, an FBI operation called Road Brokers, brought criminal charges against numerous brokers, involving client investment account frauds, just another step in helping preserve our country's free market system.

securities fraud matters are becoming more complex as the industry develops At the end of fiscal year 1998, there were 865 open securities fraud cases.
http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cid/fc/ec/about/about_scf.htm
SECURITIES / COMMODITIES FRAUD OBJECTIVE
To reduce the amount of economic loss to investors due to fraud in the investment marketplace, bogus securities, and Internet fraud. The economic stability of the United States and the soundness of the nation's financial markets are directly related to the integrity of the securities and commodities markets. The trading volume in the United States' securities and commodities markets has grown dramatically over the last decade. This growth has led to an increase in fraud and misconduct by investors, executives, shareholders, and other market participants. Securities regulators and other prominent groups have estimated that securities and commodities fraud totals approximately $40 billion per year. The fraudulent schemes perpetrated in the securities and commodities markets can ultimately have a devastating impact on the viability and operation of those very markets. Securities fraud matters are becoming more complex as the industry develops more complicated investment vehicles in an effort to obtain higher rates of return. In addition, fraudulent securities operators are expanding the scope of their fraud and are looking outside of the United States for new markets and investors to defraud. The securities industry is one of the most critical and influential industries in the country and is highly regulated by the federal government.

, is a Boston law firm seeking to offer big firm services in a small firm setting. We have the same type of clients as larger law firms, ranging from small businesses to large universities to government agencies to international corporations. On the other hand, we also service those individuals who need to take on the big law firms. All of our clients deal directly with the partners and senior attorneys themselves, all of whom have practiced long enough to recognize the reality that every client reasonably believes that they are the firm's most important client. As we can keep our overhead down because of our size, we keep our hourly rates below what they would be if we were working at a big firm. We recognize that legal services are expensive and seek to offer quality services without forgetting about the costs to the client. includes among our attorneys the former General Counsel to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR), a former deputy-counsel to the City of Boston, and attorneys who have worked at major New York and Boston law firms and who have joined the firm after service as partners at other small and mid-sized Boston law firms. The firm's partners have continued the firm's tradition of service to Boston's business community and to the community at large. See "Attorneys" for more information on of our attorneys and "Practice Areas" for more information on the services we render to our clients. The practice areas and experience of our attorneys covers a broad swarth of business, commercial and personal law practice, litigation and business law.
