Seat belt safety check a success
On Thursday, May 12, the annual Ohio State Highway Patrol Seat Belt Pizza Hut Challenge took place at Turpin and Anderson high schools. At the 2:15 p.m. dismissal, volunteers conducted a seat belt "click-it" safety check for student vehicles departing the schools' parking lots. PTA volunteers helped count cars, drivers and passengers and passed out Pizza Hut coupons and cups to those in compliance with seatbelt laws. Those students who were not in compliance were reminded to buckle up as required by state law. Representatives from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, Anderson Township Traffic Safety and Hamilton County Safe Communities also were on hand to observe, provide assistance and pass out coupons and cups. NTSB Advisory
National Transportation Safety Board
Washington, DC 20594
November 14, 2003 NTSB TO PARTICIPATE IN PRESS CONFERENCE URGING STATES TO MANDATE PRIMARY ENFORCEMENT OF SEAT BELTS Washington, D.C. The National Transportation Safety Board and the National Safety Council's Airbag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign will hold a press conference on Monday, November 17, 2003 where NTSB Chairman Ellen G. Engleman will underscore the need for States to adopt the Boards recommendations for primary seat belt laws. The event will also launch the start of the Airbag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign's 14-day Click It Or Ticket Mobilization campaign.
The 10 a.m. press conference, which will be held in the NTSB's Boardroom and Conference Center at 429 L'Enfant Plaza, SW, Washington, D.C., will bring attention to the unnecessary deaths and injuries resulting from vehicle occupants not wearing seat belts. "As a nation, we must aggressively pursue transportation safety and the enactment of laws mandating primary enforcement of seat belts," said NTSB Chairman Ellen G. Engleman. "This legislation is one of the most important life-saving measures that costs nothing, but will save many lives."
In 1995, the Safety Board recommended that states enact legislation providing for primary enforcement of seat belt laws, which makes it legal for law enforcement officers to stop a vehicle solely for a seatbelt violation. In 1996, the Safety Board added primary enforcement to its list of Most Wanted safety improvements. In 1997, the Safety Board again called for states to enact primary enforcement and to provide the political will to enable law enforcement to vigorously enforce this important lifesaving law.

This information was received from the TBI Prevent List: I believe I wrote a message to this list about this program having its kick-off Memorial Day Weekend. This is a very interesting follow-up, something we don't always get when we hear of a new program being launched. I always love to share good news! September 17, 1998 Increase in Seat Belt Use Decrease In Deaths Spurs Expansion Of Operation ABC Mobilization WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ New data show that the nationally-coordinated seat belt enforcement drive, the Operation ABC Mobilization, is saving lives by getting more people to buckle up. As a result, organizers announced today that the effort will be conducted again, on an even larger scale. The Operation ABC Mobilization: America Buckles Up Children is a 50-state crackdown on drivers who don't buckle up children. It has been conducted twice in the past two years. Based on very favorable initial evidence of effectiveness, organizers are making plans to repeat and expand the effort during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, and two more times in 1999. The evidence of effectiveness while not definitive is very strong. A before and after observational survey conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that six million more Americans were buckled up after the last Mobilization, which was conducted during Memorial Day. And a newly updated report from the National Safety Council concluded that fatalities were down by more than one-third over the holiday, despite low gas prices and heavy travel.
