Getting Back on Track for a New School Year Sleep Tips from the National Sleep Foundation A sleepy child will have difficulty learning. Children often resent the earlier sleeping hour that school imposes on them. Here are some important facts and tactics for helping your children get the sleep they require.
  • Impress upon your children the importance of sleep. Make sure sleeping feels like a good thing, never a punishment.
  • Know how much sleep your kids need and take the necessary steps to ensure they get it.
  • Teach your kids good sleep habits. Set a regular bedtime and give the child a comfortable sleeping space that is cool, quiet and dark.
  • Computers and TVs can distract children from sleeping. Keep them out of the bedroom.
  • Colas, energy drinks and other beverages contain caffeine and should be avoided by children. Screen Time A new school year has begun. This is a good time to review your child's TV, computing and video game habits. Adjusting them accordingly can give your child an academic advantage. More than 2 hours a day of combined "screen time" is considered by most experts to be excessive. Excessive TV is linked to certain negative effects including obesity, aggressive behavior, lower reading skills and poorer academic achievement in general and an increase in a child's desire for toys and other products being advertised.

    Organic pest moderation
The best way to moderate the presence of unwanted insects in your school garden is to take cues from nature. The natural world is self-regulating and has flourished from the beginning of time without the use of chemical additives. Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and chemical fertilizers are extremely toxic to humans, insects, plants, and animals. They pollute waterways and disrupt the innate rhythm of nature. Furthermore, chemical additives are not selective. They kill both beneficial and unwanted insects and plants. Without a doubt, these chemicals do not belong at your school! Think about utilizing these environmentally conscious, ecologically friendly, and economical alternatives instead:
Begin from the ground up. Loose, well-drained, and nutrient-rich soil with organic compost is essential for growing healthy plants. As a result, healthy plants attract fewer insects so your garden will be less susceptible to attacks. Think prevention! Companion planting (hyperlink) is an effective way to naturally protect plants from unwanted insects. When planted in close proximity, companion plants act as natural deterrents of pests. Certain vegetables even return higher yields when planted with their companions. Crop rotation also reduces pest populations and replenishes the soil with essential nutrients that are lost due to growing plants from the same family season after season in the same spot.

Seasonal Activities Special Units Seasonal Activities Introducing Autumn
By Carol Troha and Andrea Coll To celebrate the arrival of autumn and the coming of the holidays, seasonal activities filled the school. The kids went on a nature walk to the playground to look for signs of fall. They talked about special fall flowers, leaves changing colors, squirrels gathering nuts, birds — or lack of birds. We talked about the colors of fall — red, orange, yellow, gold, brown and green — and made leaf piles in the yard and jumped in them.
