REFINING A TOPIC
Introduction Narrowing a Topic Broadening a Topic
INTRODUCTION
Once you have found some background information , you can refine your broad research topic into a narrow, focused topic . The sooner you can develop a broad subject into a focused topic, the sooner you can shape your research into a finished paper. On the other hand, if your subject is too focused or detailed , you may have a hard time finding enough sources to write an acceptable paper. In this case, to need to broaden your topic If you need assistance refining your topic, please consult any reference librarian
NARROWING A TOPIC
A topic that covers too much material is a common problem for students. Depending on your interests, a general topic can be focused in many ways. For example, if you want to do a paper on government funding of the arts, consider the following questions:
  • What do you already know about this subject? Is there a specific time period you want to cover?

What Is A Topic Specific Directory? A topic specific directory is a directory that has multiple categories pertaining to only one specific subject matter. An example of a topic specific directory is the DanGable.com Wrestling Directory. This directory contains only categories and resources that are related specifically to wrestling. Categories consist of college wrestling teams, high school wrestling teams, wrestling camps, clinics, organizations and more. Each category is separated into smaller sub-categories pertaining to specific states. A topic specific directory will never leave it's focus. Categories or web sites will never appear that are not related to one simple subject matter.

About Teoma
Teoma Search Technology Development Team and History Search with Authority: The Teoma Difference Search Tips Adding a New Dimension to Search: The Teoma Difference is Authority
A lot of the players in the ever-evolving search space talk about relevance. But what do they really do to achieve this Holy Grail? And what do they offer to prove their claims? The truth is, not much. Teoma has invented a whole new approach to search, and this allows us to achieve our mission of providing the best search results on the Web. Now, we could throw a lot of fancy terms at you, like dynamic ranking and advanced algorithms. And these concepts are a crucial part of what makes Teoma so powerful. But, what's really important for you to know is that Teoma adds a new dimension and level of authority to search results through its breakthrough approach, known as Subject-Specific Popularity SM Instead of ranking results based upon the sites with the most links leading to them, Teoma analyzes the Web as it is organically organized-in naturally-occurring communities that are about or related to the same subject-to determine which sites are most relevant. Teoma is the only search technology that can locate communities on the Web within their specific subject areas, as they actually exist. And this allows us to finely tune our search process, providing more precise results. To determine the authority-and thus the overall quality and relevance-of a site's content, Teoma uses

Finding specific information In the library
On the internet
In the library
Arrange a consultation with a reference librarian. Once you have done your general reading in a subject area and have chosen a topic for your paper, you need to do some in-depth reading to look for a focus. You need to become informed about the topic. A reference librarian, especially a subject specialist, can point you toward good reading materials, some of which may be reference materials and others of which can be checked out. The search strategy you follow at this stage can then be used for gathering information once you've formed a focus for your research. Find out what specific subject headings pertain to your topic (there may be several), so you can search the library catalog effectively (see Searching the catalog by subject and keyword for details). Ask the reference librarian to recommend journals or periodicals held in the library's collection which are likely to cover your topic the best. You can often use search syntax to restrict your search in a periodical index to certain journals. That way, the articles you find should be in your library's collection and available to you. If you don't find enough material, you may also want to search the periodical index without limiting it to journals in your library, then find out how to get copies of the articles you need. Search one of the index tools to discover essays or other "less than book length" works on your topic

Abstract:
In response to a query a search engine returns a ranked list of documents. If the query is broad (i.e., it matches many documents) then the returned list is usually too long to view fully. Studies show that users usually look at only the top 10 to 20 results. In this paper, we propose a novel ranking scheme for broad queries that places the most authoritative pages on the query topic at the top of the ranking. Our algorithm operates on a special index of "expert documents." These are a subset of the pages on the WWW identified as directories of links to non-affiliated sources on specific topics. Results are ranked based on the match between the query and relevant descriptive text for hyperlinks on expert pages pointing to a given result page. We present a prototype search engine that implements our ranking scheme and discuss its performance. With a relatively small (2.5 million page) expert index, our algorithm was able to perform comparably on broad queries with the best of the mainstream search engines.
1 Introduction
When searching the WWW broad queries tend to produce a large result set. This set is hard to rank based on content alone, since the quality and "authoritativeness" of a page (namely

ALVIS ( http://www.alvis.info/ ) conducts research in the design, use and interoperability of topic-specific search engines with the goal of developing an Open Source prototype of a distributed, semantic-based search engine. The vast quantity of information sets new challenges for even the best commercial search engines. Building next generation search engines is not just a question of scaling existing techniques. What is needed is a departure from the existing keyword search that has made current search technology cumbersome even for the skilled. Qualitatively better ways are needed to allow more meaningful, semantically processed queries. New delivery modes are needed to make searching peer-to-peer as another common resource in the spirit of the Web itself. Our approach is a semantic-based search engine building on content through automated analysis. Linguistic processing is right in the heart of the search engine, which uses a probabilistic document model for relevance evaluation and information retrieval. Natural language processing and statistical processing of the corpus extracts semantic information from both queries and documents, thus providing disambiguation, semantic clarification and topical content. The automatically extracted information can enrich indexed documents and can be used to estimate the relevance of documents to queries.

80. The Clever Project
The CLEVER search engine incorporates several algorithms that make use of hyperlink a specific topic domain, ignoring unrelated and irrelevant material.
http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/k53/clever.html
Project Overview
The tremendous growth in the price-performance of networking and storage has fueled the explosive growth of the web. The amount of information easily accessible from the desktop has dramatically increased by several orders of magnitude in the last few years, and shows no signs of abating. Users of the web are being confronted with the consequent information overload problem. It can be exceedingly difficult to locate resources that are both high-quality and relevant to their information needs. Traditional automated methods for locating information are easily overwhelmed by low-quality and unrelated content. Thus, the second generation of search engines will have to have effective methods for focusing on the most authoritative among these documents. The rich structure implicit in the hyperlinks among Web documents offers a simple, and effective, means to deal with many of these problems. The CLEVER search engine incorporates several algorithms that make use of hyperlink structure for discovering high-quality information on the Web. Ongoing work in the Clever project focuses on higher-level applications based on the basic Clever engine described in the publications below. There are a number of emerging new directions within the CLEVER project.
