Useful and Interesting Web Sites
This page has links to sites that teacher librarians can share with the young people who use their school libraries. There are search engines for kids, "homework help" sites, and sites that are good fun and/or informative. The aim is to help teacher librarians to encourage safe net surfing and to steer young people to sites that may appeal to them. As is usual for IASL's pages of links to Internet resources, preference has been given to sites that lead to a range of well-chosen resources. Before using the resources on this page, you should look at Child Safety on the Information Highway This is an online version of a brochure that is designed to help parents, teachers, and school librarians to guide children in their exploration of the Internet. It is readable, sensible, and very practical. See also the following sites: The following sites provide information about filtering software for the World Wide Web:

Safe Searching on the Web
As the parents of three young children, my spouse and I monitor very carefully their time on the Internet. We're always right there with them as they explore, because, let's face it, there are some real whackos out there that definitely do not have kids' best interests in mind! I put together a Safe Search Checklist that really sums up my philosophy of children and the Web, and is a great resource for parents, educators, and anyone else interested in keeping kids safe. Safe Searching for Kids
Jim Lynch
Although Yahoo! and other search engines can be used by children, you should keep in mind that sometimes there are inappropriate site links displayed in search results. Search results can contain links to pornographic and violent sites, even if you've used an innocuous sounding keyword as the search criterion. If you're going to let your child search the Web, it's much better to use a kid-safe search engine. Two prominent examples are Yahooligans!, the kid-safe version of Yahoo, and the kids only section of AOL's Netfind. Both of these directories have been modified to filter out inappropriate sites so your child won't see them displayed in search results:
