Meta-Search Engines
Because search engines are incomplete in their coverage of the web, search engines which execute a parallel search of multiple other search engines have been developed. By searching several databases at the same time, these "meta-search" engines are able to find more hits for a single query. In theory, this reduces the work for you, the searcher, but there are often so many search results that it can be overwhelming. Because of this, it is recommended that you use meta-search engines only if you can't find what you're looking for otherwise.
  • Dogpile With Dogpile, you can search a "dogpile" of search engines. Results are sorted by search engine. Reference Department
Indiana University Libraries
jiliu@indiana.edu URL: http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/search/meta.html Last Update: June 1999 By now it is fairly safe to assume that most World Wide Web surfers have used one of the Web search engines (such as AltaVista or Northern Light) or Web directories (such as Yahoo! or eBLAST). These resources collect Web pages and create databases for people to browse or search. They can be quite comprehensive (AltaVista claims to have 150 million web pages in its database), or fairly specialized (The Internet Movie Database is for movies). Each of them has its unique content and presents a unique interface, requires a unique set of rules for searching and displays search results differently. To exhaust a search, one often has to use several of them and has to be familiar with the different interfaces and searching rules. It would be highly desirable to have a central place with a uniform interface, where a query can be entered and the search can be conducted simultaneously in as many search engines and directories as necessary, and search results can be brought back and displayed in a consistent format. Tools with these features have come to be called meta-search engines. Unlike the individual search engines and directories, meta-search engines do not have their own databases; they do not collect web pages; they do not accept URL additions; and they do not classify or review web sites. Instead, they send queries simultaneously to multiple Web search engines and/or Web directories. Many of the meta-search engines integrate search results: duplicate findings are merged into one entry; some rank the results according to various criteria; some allow selection of search engines to be searched.

Net Search. (3) Simultaneous (parallel) MegaIndexes We never meta searchengine Net Magazine, (December). 2. I remember submitting the word
http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue2_2/peterson/
by RICHARD EINER PETERSON
Search engines fall into five categories: robotic Internet search engines which use a Web robot to retrieve a significant number of documents from the World Wide Web; mega-indexes which have links to the robotic search engines; simultaneous mega-indexes which access the robotic search engines simultaneously; subject directories which are manually-maintained collections of Web sites organized by topic; and robotic specialized search engines which focus on a small or specialized segment of the Internet. There are eight robotic Internet search engines: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, InfoSeek Guide, Lycos, Open Text, Ultra, and WebCrawler. The power of these search engines is compared by their performance on a search term "embargo" and a search phrase "Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points" over three time periods in 1996, in February, May, and November. A comparison was made of eleven special features of these search engines: a) full text indexed; b) number of total matches given; c) maximum number of returns; d) returns: size (bytes) given; e) returns: date given; f) returns: number at a time; g) returns numbered; h) search for pictures and sound; i) browsable categories; j) daily news available; and, k) NASDAQ ticker symbol.

At the futuristic New York World's Fair of 1939, there was much talk of robots which could vacuum rugs. People expected robots that would soon clean their homes. This hasn't happened. Yet, a robot of another kind is alive and well on the Internet. It travels on the Net, retrieving documents as well as supplementary materials and data. Working day and night, these virtual robots garner information by the gigabytes.

Releasing the Session Section III: Other Considerations Section IV: Reference Documents Section V: Contact Information Section I: Introduction This document describes methodologies for accessing WilsonWeb subscriptions via meta search gateways. The intended audience is the meta search gateway development staff. It presents two alternative ways one might approach sending queries via a gateway and then presenting the results in either a summary HTML format or a detail HTML format. It includes a discussion of the pros and cons of the two methodologies. For the purposes of this document, the term gateway simply means an intermediate system that performs a WilsonWeb search on behalf of some end user. Section II: Methods Available The model described is one where the gateway sends a query to WilsonWeb on behalf of some meta search system user. It is presumed that once the gateway determines if there are any hits on WilsonWeb for the given query, it will provide the user with an HTTP link that will send the user to WilsonWeb in order to display the records from WilsonWeb. Other possibilities exist, but since this is the predominant model requested by users, it is the only one described here.

ProFusion: Intelligent Meta-Search at ITTC, University of Kansas, Lawrence KS Project Personnel Dr. Susan Gauch The goal of this research is to develop a pilot system which will automatically browse the online information, filter and display it, bringing the information to the user rather than requiring the user to seek it out. In the first phase of this project, we developed a meta-search engine, ProFusion, to retrieve, process, and merge search results from multiple search engines. ProFusion sends user queries to multiple underlying search engines in parallel, retrieves and merges the resulting URLs. It identifies and removes duplicates and creates one relevance-ranked list. If desired, the actual documents can be pre-fetched to remove yet more duplicates and broken links. In future, actual documents can also be analyzed to improve ranking. The goal of this phase is to make ProFusion an intelligent yet efficient information filtering and dissemination system. ProFusion Search with our commercial search engine. Lesson 3: Web Search Engines
    Module 6 Meta-Search Engines
A special kind of search engine called a meta-search engine (or parallel search engine) allows you to query several search engines at once. Instead of doing a search itself, a meta-search engine sends your request to other search engines, compiles the results, and displays them for you. This process is much faster than querying several search engines separately. Meta-search engines do not own a database of web pagesthey use and deliver results from the databases and search programs of each of the individual search engines they query. Meta-search engines act as an intelligent middle-man to pass your search through, gather the responses and then give you a report from several engines at once. As well as saving time, this kind of search engine can give you an overview of the kind of document you may find using your search terms and may even result in giving you exactly what you need if you are searching for a unique term or phrase. There are some disadvantages in relying exclusively on meta-search engines. None of the meta-search engines query all of the largest search engines. If a search connection takes too long, one or more of the search engines may time out and produce no results. If you submit a complicated search to a meta-search engine that one of the queried tools does not "understand", you may get no hits at all from that engine. However, you will usually get results from another tool that supports your search strategy.
