Now supported by a number of multimillion dollar grants, Pierce's research is revealing what cancer does at the molecular level. His latest grant is a five-year, $6.7 million award for research that could eventually help in the treatment of certain kinds of cancer and Parkinson's disease.
The grant is cosponsored by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), a component of the National Institutes of Health, and by the National Cancer Institute. “We are delighted that our work is increasingly drawing this kind of support,” said Pierce, principal investigator for the grant and faculty member at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC). "It demonstrates the high quality of our faculty and staff at the CCRC and at UGA, as well as those at Georgia Tech, who share the award.”

PatentCafe Staff
PatentCafe has expanded the online help “FAQs” of its Latent Semantic Analysis patent search engine to a fully searchable help center. Since searching patents with Latent Semantic Analysis technology (advanced natural language) is “apples to oranges” different from traditional Boolean patent search engines, it was important to provide instantly accessible tools for users to quickly become master LAS researchers.
The New Help Site pops up on command to help researchers develop patent search query structure including combined LSA / advanced Boolean, understand relevancy-ranking of search results, maximizing the “search within” capabilities, and how to access online patent results graphs and charts.

New ILRS at Information Online 2001
After many months of hard work in planning and development, the new ILRS system is about to have its first public appearance. A sample database version of the system will be demonstrated by Dr. Bronwyn Lee at the National Library trade stand at the Information Online 2001 conference being held in Sydney this week. No prearranged times have been set for the demonstrations, so just call in to the National Library stand and ask Bronwyn to show you how it works. Bronwyn will also be able to answer any queries you might have regarding the recent minor changes implemented in ALG.
Through the Magnifying Glass : searching the Gateway
Through the Magnifying Glass is the first of two articles on searching, and maximizing your search outcomes on, the Australian libraries-focused ALG. The Gateway may be conveniently thought of comprising two principal areas. These are, firstly, a library-specific, user-driven search engine and, secondly, sets of directories with predefined topics. Representative of these directories are Australian search engines, lists of Australian publishers and booksellers and Australian government publications.
