Sea Otter ( Enhydra lutris The sea otter is one of the smallest marine mammals in North America although they do occur in three Asian regions.
  • The Northern Japanese archipelago The Kamchatka peninsula Commander islands
  • The Sea otter is the only true marine otter of all the otter and they can dive up to 40metres to catch their prey. When they reach the surface they lie of their backs using their tummy as a table and a tool such as a stone to help open their prey. They eat a variety of food including clams, crabs, abalone, and starfish and up to 40 other marine animals. They live in relatively cold waters of 30-50F but do not even have blubber to keep them warm. Like all otters they rely on their fur, which is the thickest of all otters with 400,000 hairs per square cm. Observations have shown that the foraging of the sea otter is greatest in early morning and late evening; they usually stay close to the shore in large groups but can be found up to 5km out at sea. They rest in the kelp beds in “rafts” and wrap the seaweed around them to stop them floating away. Breeding takes place throughout the year but peaks in birth in May and June have been recognised.

The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) lives in shallow water areas along the shores of the North Pacific. Its range once extended from southern California north then west through the Aleutian Islands, to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and south to the northern islands of Japan. In 1742, Vitus Bering's men returned with sea otter pelts from the historic voyage of discovery of Alaska. Interest in these rich furs initiated an era of exploitation which almost wiped out the sea otter.
    General description:
Sea otters are members of the weasel family (Mustelidae) and are related to mink and river otters. Adult males weight 70 to 90 pounds (32-41 kg) with some individuals weighing 100 pounds. Females average 40 to 60 pounds (18-27 kg). Adults reach a length of 4.5 feet (1.4 m). The hind feet are webbed and are adapted for swimming. The toes on the forefeet are short and stiff, enabling the animal to deftly handle food. On land their gait is clumsy. Probably because of this vulnerability, they are seldom found more than a few yards from water.

    Willie the Sea Otter
Willie the sea otter has a unique story, but it is one that represents some of the best work that zoos and aquariums do to intervene in the natural world. It is also a story of the relationship between animals and the people who care for them. Willie is a California sea otter Enhydra lutris nerisis , also called the southern sea otter. He differs from the northern sea otter, Enhydra lutris lutris , in both size, (he is smaller, about 60 lbs) and in his Threatened status. The Alaskan sea otter, or northern sea otter, can weigh up to 90lbs and the population is generally robust throughout its range.. All California sea otters were thought to be extinct into the 1900’s. In 1915, however, 32 otters were discovered at Point Sur. So fragile was this remnant population that biologists kept it secret from the public until the 1930's. Since that time, and under strict protection, the population has grown to a considerably improved, but still precarious, population of about 2000 - hence Willie’s Threatened status. Each spring many sea otters strand along the shores near the Monterey Bay. The Sea Otter Research and Conservation Program (SORAC) of the Monterey Bay Aquarium rescue these otters whenever possible. On April 15, 1994, Willie was found on the beach, bedraggled and barely alive. He was just two days old with his umbilicus still attached. A tourist found his matted form in the sand and kelp along the beach of Spanish Bay, near Pebble Beach. The Monterey Bay rescue team responded immediately. They speculated that a recent storm had separated Willie from his mother. - Newborn pups are so buoyant that they cannot dive below the action of the surface waves and are literally “tossed before the storm”. Mothers can easily lose track. “He was a mess.” the staff recalls.

CNN's Ann Kellan reports (July 5) Play video (QuickTime, Real or Windows Media) MONTEREY, California (CNN) Fur hunters in the 1800s nearly wiped out the southern sea otter population off the California cost. Today the species again struggles to survive, this time because of diseases unleashed by human activities. To help the animals survive, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium are raising orphaned otters, which will eventually be released back into the wild. Conservation In August of 2003, an 8-week-old abandoned otter pup named Calypso was rescued and brought to the Seattle Aquarium. This furry bundle of joy has warmed the hearts of visitors and staff alike, but she’s just one example of how sea otter rescue and rehab supports the Aquarium’s mission of marine conservation. Providing an incredible amount of data, the Otter Watch program’s observers record the interaction between mothers and pups. “Volunteers are on 4-hour shifts 24 hours/day providing instantaneous scan samples of the otters’ behavior every two minutes,” explains Casson. But the otter program goes beyond research and into the minds and hearts of many to help teach marine conservation. “They are like little, furry ambassadors to the wild,” smiles Casson. “The otters grab the attention of visitors (especially kids) and serve as great tools to talk about conservation, the web of life, and how everything is connected in some way.” Contact Us Home Site Map
