Alaskan Sea Otter Listed as Threatened
Population Drops Below 9,000
By Juliet Eilperin Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, August 10, 2005; Page A03 Federal officials yesterday designated the southwest Alaska sea otter a species that teetered on the edge of extinction in the late 1800s as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, alarmed that its numbers have dipped sharply over the past 15 years. Fur hunters nearly wiped out the otters, whose range stretches from Cook Inlet to the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island, by 1911, at which point the otters received international protection. By the mid- to late 1980s, as many as 74,000 otters thrived in Alaska's Aleutian Islands alone, but this number has now dropped to below 9,000. Bruce Woods, a spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Alaska region, said government scientists are still searching for the reason the population has declined so quickly. Predatory orca whales may account for the drop, he said, but officials are still not sure. Sea otters on the Russian side of the Aleutian Islands are doing better than their American counterparts.

T he sea otter, Enhydra lutris, is about three feet long, with a tail that adds approximately one more foot to its length. In shape it is like a river otter, which is slightly smaller in body but has a longer tail. Both animals have webbed feet, though the back feet of the sea otter are enormous by comparison, which is important for its life in the ocean. Before intense hunting the sea otter spent part of its life on land, but that behavior was changed so that it rarely is seen ashore, a case where humans altered the behavior of an animal in a drastic way. The Russian hunters sent the sable, fox, squirrel, etc. back to western Russia where it was traded to western Europe. Geographic Range
North American river otters once occurred throughout Canada and the United States, except for areas of southern California, New Mexico, and Texas, and the Mohave desert of Nevada and Colorado. In Mexico they are found in the delta areas of the Rio Grande and Colorado river. These otters are now rare or locally extinct throughout much of the eastern, central, and southern United States. Biogeographic Regions:

Habitat
North American river otters are found anywhere there is a permanent food supply and easy access to water. They can live in freshwater and coastal marine habitats, including rivers, lakes, marshes, swamps, and estuaries. River otters can tolerate a variety of environments, including cold and warmer latitudes and high elevations. North American river otters seem to be sensitive to pollution and disappear from areas with polluted waters. North American river otters build dens in the burrows of other mammals, in natural hollows, such as under a log, or in river banks. Dens have underwater entrances and a tunnel leading to a nest chamber that is lined with leaves, grass, moss, bark, and hair.

The furry, brown sea otter is an ocean-going member of the weasel family. Well adapted to a marine life, the otter's hind feet are webbed and flattened into broad flippers. Large, flat molars help the otter to eat hard-shelled sea animals, and dense, soft fur protects it from the cold ocean water. Adult Southern sea otters average about 4 feet (1.3 meters) long, and 45-65 lb. (20-30 kg) in weight. Male otters are larger than females. The Southern sea otter is one of the two subspecies of sea otter on the Pacific Coast of North America. The larger, Alaskan or Northern sea otter has a more northerly range. "A Marine Mammal" Sea otters live in a narrow band along the coast, and rarely venture much more than about 1 1/2 miles (3km) offshore. Kelp beds (a "forest" of very tall seaweed anchored to the seafloor) are a favorite habitat. Sea otters are often seen just offshore, floating on their backs, paddling with their hind limbs and sculling with their tail. They sometimes congregate in groups of several otters called "rafts". Sea otters often sleep in the kelp forest, lying under strands of the seaweed to keep from drifting away. "Valuable Fur" Sea otters spend almost half their day grooming their fur in order to keep it waterproof and warm - dirty, matted fur would soon lose it's insulating properties - and put the otter in peril from cold. This is because the sea otter has no insulating fat or blubber like seals and whales, so it's extremely thick fur is very important. Otter fur is the densest of any mammals, with about 100,000 hairs/ cm2, that's over 800 million hairs on a large adult. To get an idea of how much 800 million is, picture 106 shoeboxes filled with sugar grains! Ironically, this special fur that helps the sea otter survive, has also endangered it. Sea otter pelts have been a valuable item to people since the 1700's. Unregulated hunting during the 18th and 19th centuries severely reduced otter populations.

Sea Otter Sea Otter: Enhydra lutris Distribution: Coastal waters of California, Western Alaska, the Commander and Kurile Islands, north of Japan. Habitat: Kelp Beds Size: Up to 5 feet long, including a 1 foot long tail. Weighs up to 100lb. Gestation: 8-9 months. Sexually mature at 3 years, mating can take place all year round. Diet: Sea urchins, crabs, abalones and other shellfish, also fish and octopus.
The sea otter is an almost exclusively marine animal, spending little time ashore. Its fur is thick and glossy and ranges in colour from black to dark brown, with some white tipped hairs. The large, blunt head, throat and chest are all creamy white. Its ears are almost hidden in its fur and its eyes are small. Sea otters are propelled through the water using their long, well-defined flipper-like hind feet. The forelegs are comparatively small, with five-fingered forepaws, which are used to grasp shell fish and other prey. The sea otter is the only carnivore to have four incisor teeth in its lower jaw. These are used to break open the shells of crabs, sea urchins and other shellfish.

Sea Otter
Enhydra lutra Family: Mustelidae The sea otter is a well known inhabitant of the coastlines of California and Alaska. These members of the weasel family were hunted nearly to extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries for their soft fur. Because of reintroduction efforts in the 1970s off the Washington coast, they are making a slow but steady comeback here at Olympic.
