Sea Otters, Seals and Sea Lions on the Kenai Peninsula
The cutest of all saltwater wildlife has to be the sea otter. Its whiskery "old man" look and innocence make it a mammal that everyone loves to view. The coastal areas surrounding the Kenai Peninsula support large numbers of sea otters as well as populations of seals and sea lions. Otters are frequent visitors to kelp patches where much of their primary food sources occur. Seals and sea lions feed in more open waters primarily for herring and other bait fish but best viewing is along rocky shorelines where they haul out to sunbathe. Shore-based Viewing
Although viewing from shore is somewhat limited there are a few locations which will give you an opportunity to view and photograph these creatures. If you are in Homer , I have always encountered a sea otter or two swimming just off the beach at the end of the Homer Spit around Land's End Resort. This area provides no protection for them so the ones that frequent this location are passing through during their feeding. Its a waiting game but you won't be bored. The view of the bay, glaciers, mountains and the procession of sport and commercial fishing boats is breath-taking. If you are in Seward , you will have excellent opportunities to view sea lions and sea otters right in town near the Small Boat Harbor. A large number of

Even though sea lions are warm-blooded, they are covered in a thick layer of blubber. This blubber insulates them from cold ocean temperatures and keeps the sea lion's body heat from escaping. In the images below, notice that the warmest area is the sea lion's eyes. In most of the images the sea lion is sunning itself and the heat shown is mainly from sunlight warming the sea lion's skin and fur. The last two images show the sea lions as they are emerging from the water. Notice how cool they appear!

Sea Lions Slaughtered by WA Fisheries Minister’s Delays?
Media Release
20 July 2005
WA Fisheries Minister Jon Ford last week condemned at least 5 endangered Sea Lion pups to death when he delayed the introduction of sea lion exclusion devices in the West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery for another 12 months. Wilderness Society campaigner, Rebecca Hubbard said: ”The Fisheries Minister’s decision flies in the face of the scientific research and advice given by the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee to immediately attach proven Sea Lion exclusion devices.

New Zealand Sea Lions
Each year dozens of sea lions die a painful, terror-filled death in the gigantic trawl nets of the Auckland Islands squid fishery. New Zealand has an international reputation for championing the rights of marine mammals. Yet while we rightly criticise the actions of those who kill marine mammals -like Japanese whalers- we have failed to effectively protect our native New Zealand sea lions in our own waters. Over 2000 of these threatened animals have been killed by the Auckland Islands squid fishery in the last 25 years. The 20km marine mammal sanctuary around the Auckland Islands and yearly "quota" of sea lions are not providing adequate protection. Almost all the recorded sea lion deaths have occurred within a 20 to 100-km radius of the Auckland Islands. Forest and Bird's Campaign Forest and Bird wants better protection for the New Zealand sea lion. Forest and Bird does not consider any number of sea lion deaths to be an acceptable consequence of squid fishing. The fisheries-related deaths of these vulnerable marine mammals can and must be eliminated. The current 20km marine mammal sanctuary around the Auckland Islands needs to be extended to a 100km radius. A 100km no-trawl zone, in the form of a marine mammal sanctuary, would virtually eliminate sea lion deaths. There should also be a 20 kilometre no fishing sanctuary around the Campbell Islands to protect sea lions that breed there. If the area was a marine mammal sanctuary, other forms of squid-specific fishing such as squid jigging would still be allowed in the sanctuary, but not within 20km of the island. Jigging involves the use of lines and hooks that pose minimal risks to non-target species.

The Navy's Marine Mammal Program began in 1960 with two goals. First, the Navy wanted to study the underwater sonar capabilities of dolphins and beluga whales to learn how to design more efficient methods of detecting objects underwater, and to improve the speed of their boats and submarines by researching how dolphins are able to swim so fast and dive so deep. In addition to this research component, the Navy also trained dolphins, beluga whales, sea lions and other marine mammals to perform various underwater tasks, including delivering equipment to divers underwater, locating and retrieving lost objects, guarding boats and submarines, and doing underwater surveillance using a camera held in their mouths . Dolphins were used for some of these tasks in the Vietnam War and in the Persian Gulf. The Marine Mammal Program was originally classified, and was at its peak during the Cold War. The Soviet Union's military was conducting similar research and training programs in the race to dominate the underwater front. At one point during the 1980's, the U.S. program had over 100 dolphins, as well as numerous sea lions and beluga whales, and an operating budget of $8 million dollars. By the 1990's, however, the Cold War was over, and the Navy's Marine Mammal project was downsized. In 1992, the program bec ame declassified. Many of the dolphins were retired, and controversy arose over whether or not it would be feasible to return unnecessary dolphins to the wild. ðSpecific Tasks Navy marine mammals are trained to perform many underwater duties, including

Research Background
In 1993, a large scale research plan was developed by the North Pacific Universities Marine Mammal Research Consortium to study marine mammal and fishery interactions in the North Pacific, and to determine possible causes for declining populations of Steller sea lions. A combination of field, captive and laboratory studies make up the components of the research undertaken. Various hypotheses such as increases in parasites or disease, predation by killer whales, environmental dangers or disasters and nutritional stress, caused by natural or human interference in amounts, quality or distribution of their prey, are all being studied as potential factors in the diminishing number of sea lions. Research to analyse the nutritional stress hypothesis is fronted with the help of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre's Marine Mammal Department.

A steller sea lion on a rock Only a concerted effort and a commitment to long-term research will determine the causes of changes in the North Pacific. Field, captive, and laboratory studies are integrated and draw on the expertise and talents of university-based physiologists, ecologists, marine mammalogists, fisheries specialists and oceanographers. Since 1993, the Consortium has been engaged in a captive research program at the Aquarium to better understand the nutritional needs of Steller sea lions, and to develop better techniques for studying them in the wild.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Seals and Sea Lions. View the La Jolla Friends of Seals SealCam Live on CamZone Networks' website.
  • Why are the animals on the beach? The marine mammals that most often come ashore at the Children's Pool beach are Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina) and California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus). The seals "haul out" on the Children's Pool beach in the Fall, Winter and Spring. They come to the protected beach when offshore rocks are washed by high surf and corresponding high tides. The seals prefer areas of easy entry and exit such as the Children's Pool beach.
  • How can you tell a Harbor Seal from a Sea Lion? Sea lions are larger, with longer flippers and are very vocal. Sea lions can support themselves on their two front flippers and actually walk. Sea lions are more territorial and aggressive. Give sea lions a wide berth. Seals are smaller and have a sleeker torpedo type of shape. They move with a rhythmic sliding or shuffling motion, and they don't use their flippers to support their body. Harbor seals are very shy and rarely vocalize. Why do they come ashore?

Sea Lions' Rock Presents "Hollywood Casting Call" Show Times: 2 pm and 4 pm daily! The script has been written, roles assigned and rehearsals are complete. Pablo, Clara and Kelpie are set to perform "Hollywood Casting Call" at Sea Lions' Rock. This entertaining and interactive family show is sure to have audience members squealing with delight. What can you expect? As the name suggests, the show is about an audition Hollywood style. Watch as sea lions Banny and Jazz vie for the lead in the upcoming feature "The Pirates of the Mall." Jazz is a star actor from California, while Banny is known more for his bungled attempts at acting. Under the lead of a director - a loud, obnoxious, controlling type who dislikes the paparazzi (if you're in the audience, watch out!) - Banny and Jazz participate in a contest. The director barks out the orders and the two attempt to accomplish her wishes. There are many twists and turns, splishing and splashing, even a bit of pandemonium as the audition wraps up with a surprise ending. Every show needs a host and Raine Sealcrest, who's as smooth as ice, always on and perfectly dressed, performs those duties. Not to be overlooked is Banny's washed up surfer talent agent who could care less about the goings-on, since his client's talents - or lack of - have limited his cash flow.
