BIOMES KEY Animal List California Sea Lion Zalophous californ We found this picture in the Compton's Encylopedia. The sea lion is on a rock off the coast of California. General Information The sea lion lives off the west coast of North America. It is a vertebrate which means it has a backbone. The sea lion lives in warm climates and migrates south to warmer climates when the temperature cools down. It is a mammal which means it has mammary glands that produce milk for its young. The physical features are growth of 5-11 feet in length and weight from 77-2400 lbs. Usually, the male is bigger than the female. The body of the sea lion is shaped like a torpedo so it can swim faster and easier. The sea lion has whiskers, a little fur, blubber, and fins. Zoo Observations The sea lion was not at the zoo. The pool was being cleaned. Niche/Habitat The sea lion's habitat is mostly water. It also can live on land for a long period of time. On land it must be on a shoreline where it is rocky. The climate must be warm. These animals do not have to migrate so far south because they are in California. They migrate south to the tip of South America where it is warmer when the temperature cools down.

MARINE MAMMALS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA Peter F Olesiuk and Michael A. Bigg, (~ 1984) Introduction Seals and sea lions, also known as pinnipeds, are a familiar sight in coastal waters off British Columbia. These mammals lead partly a terrestrial and partly a marine existence. Their streamlined bodies, specialized flippers and insulating layer of blubber allow them to travel and forage at sea with ease. However, unlike dolphins, porpoises and whales, pinnipeds require land to bear and suckle their young and to rest. The waters off B.C. are home to five species of pinnipeds representing two families. These are the Phocidae, or true seals, which includes the northern elephant seal and harbour seal, and the Otariidae or eared seals, which includes the northern fur seal and the Steller and California sea lions. The true seals are characterized by the absence of external car flaps and by their short, fur-covered flippers. On land they cannot easily raise their head and shoulders and thus tend to remain prostrate. The rear flippers cannot be rotated forward, so while on land they move in a caterpillar-like fashion, rhythmically undulating their bodies with synchronized dragging strokes of the front flippers. In water, they swim by alternating side-to-side strokes of their rear flippers, while the front flippers aid in steering. Members of the Otariidae, on the other hand, have small external ear flaps and large hairless flippers. On land the front flippers are used for body support to raise the head and shoulders. The rear flippers can be rotated under the body, which allows these animals to amble over land using both the front and rear flippers. While swimming, they use their front flippers like wings to propel and steer themselves.

Sea Lion Monitoring and Conservation
The Charles Darwin Research Station has implemented an ecological monitoring project of the Galapagos sea lion. The overall goal is to determine the current state and abundance of the sea lions and fur seals in Galapagos in order to set the baseline for monitoring and evaluating the extent of the fisheries by-catch mortalities, impacts and natural cycles; and to evaluate the interaction related with humans activities.
The fluctuating environmental conditions of the Islands, plus the increase of human activities and their waste (hooks, propellers, nets, capes, etc.) are factors that affect the groups of animals which inhabit the Galapagos Marine Reserve, including sea lions, penguins, albatross, sea turtles, and others. This is also a potentially growing problem due the promotion of deep-water tuna and billfish fisheries to supply international markets. Sea lions and fur seals are victims of the by-catch produced by long-lines, nets and other fishing mechanisms.
Activities include:
Zalophus californianus wollebaeki
) and to implement similar monitoring for the Galapagos fur seal population ( Arctocephalus galapagoensis
Objectives:

Monitoring of the sea lion population has begun, but the success of this program depends on the comprehensiveness of data throughout the islands. The overall project is planned to last two years. The first year will be focused on concretely establishing and implementing a full monitoring program to understand the status of the sea lions populations. This information will then be used to understand the connection between human activities and drops in sea lion populations, and developing methods to protect the Galapagos sea lions and fur seals.

Rescuer Peter Wallerstein
(CBS) In Southern California, rescuers are battling to save sea lions being poisoned by a toxin that occurs naturally in the sea lions' food supply.
Peter Wallerstein, who is on the front lines, tells CBS News Correspondent Sandra Hughes the culprit is a toxin called domoic acid, which is produced by naturally growing algae. "The sea lions," says Wallerstein, "washed up onto the beach, and probably they've been there about 30 minutes; usually, they're up on their four flippers, with their head bobbing back and forth with the neurotoxin exploding in their brain." The algae aren't new to Southern California waters. But, what's confounding scientists is why they're blooming so much more in past decade, Hughes points out.

The differences between seals and sea lions
Here's how you can tell the difference between seals and sea lions, even though the differences are pretty small.
They may look very much alike, but are seals and sea lions related? What are the differences? Seals and sea lions both belong to the scientific order Pinnipedia. The name literally means “fin-footed.” There are 33 living species of pinnipeds. They are all warm-blooded mammals that have a streamlined torpedo body, enabling them to swim and dive gracefully. Both seals and sea lions have flippers that act as rudders, helping them to steer in the water. However, although they are very suited to the marine environment, pinnipeds spend part of their life in the water and part on land, which sets them apart from the other marine mammals (whales). They live a nomadic lifestyle, spending months out at sea and then returning to land to rest. Scientists have divided the pinnipeds into three families: earless seals (Phocidae), eared seals (Otariidae), and walruses (Odobenidae). The earless seals are the phocids. They are what you would think of as a seal. They are called earless because they lack ear flaps. However, this does not mean they are deaf. Seals have tiny openings, which are called pinnae, that serve as ears. There are eighteen species of seals.

The Steller's Sea Lion Eumetopias jubatus ), also known as the Northern Sea Lion , is a sea lion of the temperate eastern Pacific , named by Georg Steller .It is the largest of the eared seals , measuring up to 3.3 m in length and weighing 1,100 kg. Its range extends from the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia to the Gulf of Alaska in the north, and down to the Farallon Islands off central California (they formerly bred in the Channel Islands but have not been observed there since the 1980s. . Steller's Sea Lions were listed as threatened on the U.S. endangered species list in the 1990s and have since been the object of intense study. One suspected cause of their precipitous fall in numbers is overfishing of wall-eyed pollock and other fish stocks in the Gulf of Alaska.

Sea Lions Best of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf
Our favorite thing about our least favorite place, Fisherman's Wharf, are the sea lions that own Pier 39. Hidden on the left side of Pier 39 (enourmous shopping mall) are hundreds of sea lions basking in the sun. They have taken over a marina that held boats and are an incredible natural attraction. Just walk to the end of Pier 39 on the left side along the backs of the stores and behold the sea lions. They lie there, in the sun and bark- arf arf! Many people crowd around to see the sea lions, but many others never even realize they are there. If you visit the wharf, don't miss the sea lions! Tacky and over-priced, but clever we noticed this mini bungee jumping for kids on our last hideous visit to Fisherman's Wharf. For $6, your child can be suspended from elastic cords and jump on a trampoline. Stupid as this sounds, it is a pretty cool thing also just to the left of Pier 39 in the courtyard area. The ride is called "Fearless Flyer" and it was very fun for kids as shown above. Want a great hotel and a reasonable price? Check out our readers'

Seals and Sea Lions?
Pinnipeds, fin-footed marine mammals, are divided into two categories: earless seals (true seals) and eared seals (sea lions). Earless seals like the Northern elephant seal and harbor seal are believed to have descended from a line of terrestrial mammals similar to otters. Eared seals like the California sea lion and the Northern fur seal are believed to have descended from a bear-like mammal. Adaptations like fins for mobility, blubber for warmth and hydrodynamic body shape help both species survive in an aquatic habitat. California Sea Lions Venture North
INTRO: The Steller sea lion is listed as an endangered species in much of Alaska. And while scientists search for ways to help the species recover, a potential problem looms on the horizon. As Doug Schneider reports in this week's Arctic Science Journeys Radio, California sea lions are becoming frequent visitors to the state. STORY: Mounted high on a cliff overlooking the rocks of Chiswell Island, a popular Steller sea lion rookery in the northern Gulf of Alaska, a video camera sends images of sea lions coming and going from the island directly to the Alaska SeaLife Center, some 35 miles away in Seward. It was while watching video of the rookery that SeaLife Center researcher John Maniscalco first noticed something odd about some of the sea lions. MANISCALCO: "We started seeing a few California sea lions out at Chiswell Island through our remotely operated cameras."
