Baby Seahorses Born 07/08/2001
above photos taken 08/03/2001 above photos taken 08/07/2001 I am not sure what species of seahorse these are. We have had many cross matings with a male H reidi, but we have yet to get any offspring from such a cross. The Baby seahorses were fed enriched rotifers for days 1 through 14. From day 10 on they were also fed enriched fresh hatched baby brine shrimp.
Starting on 7/31, 3 day old enriched baby brine was added to their diet.
For size reference, the black object in the photos is a rio 2100 suction cup
I would like to wean the seahorses onto non-live food. I have tried with both frozen and freeze dried cyclops but they showed no interest. The cyclops will be too small within a few weeks so they wont work. Mysis shrimp are too large and the seahorses will not be large enough to eat them for many months. Frozen brine shrimp will not have the correct nutritional profile.
If anyone has any ideas as to how this has been done I would like to know.

Culture Pretty horses Keeping the sea horse from falling victim to its own charisma By Dana Hawkins T ucked away amid glue guns and stencils in a Michaels crafts shop are racks of 99-cent dead sea horses. Just half an inch long, the desiccated animals are labeled as Pygmy sea horses, a distinctive species. Actually, they appear to be babies. "I want to decorate my bathroom in a sea theme," enthuses a young guy at one of the national chain's warehouse-size stores in Vienna, Va. "I'll hang a fishing net on the wall and throw them in with shells." Sea horses may not remain cheap baubles in the future. At least that's the intent of a recent decision to protect sea horses by the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The first marine fish of commercial value to be listed, sea horses are threatened by a lucrative, growing global trade. More than 25 million animals a year are caught and dried for use in traditional Chinese medicine and as decorative curios or sold live for aquariums. Many exploited populations plunged 15 percent to 50 percent from 1990 to 1995 and continue to decline, says Amanda Vincent, the world's leading expert on sea horses and director of Project Seahorse, which did the studies that spurred the CITES move. In the Philippinesthe biggest exporter, followed by Thailand and Indiasome local populations have dwindled much further. "People want to make sure there are always sea horses," says Vincent. "They're so intriguing and threatened that we can engage the public in a way that'd be difficult for a less sexy fish."

Though close relatives of sea horses, sea dragons have larger bodies and leaflike appendages which enable them to hide among floating seaweed or kelp beds.
    http://www.divegallery.com/Leafy_Sea_Dragon.htm
S ea Dragons are arguably the most spectacular and mysterious of all ocean fish. Though close relatives of sea horses, sea dragons have larger bodies and leaf-like appendages which enable them to hide among floating seaweed or kelp beds. Sea dragons feed on larval fishes and amphipods , such as and small shrimp-like crustaceans called mysids ("sea lice"), sucking up their prey in their small mouths. Many of these amphipods feed on the red algae that thrives in the shade of the kelp forests where the sea dragons live.
As with their smaller common seahorse (and pipefish) cousins, the male sea dragon carries and incubates the eggs until they hatch. During mating the female deposits up to 250 eggs onto the "brood patch" on the underside of the male's tail. After about eight weeks, the brood hatches, but in nature only about 5 per cent of sea dragons survive to maturity (two years). A fully grown Leafy Sea Dragon grows to about 18 inches (45 cm).
Leafy Sea Dragons are very interesting to watch the leafy appendages are not used for movement. The body of a sea dragon scarcely appears to move at all. Steering and turning is through movement of tiny, translucent fins along the sides of the head (pectoral fins, visible above) and propulsion derives from the dorsal fins (along the spine). Their movement is as though an invisible hand were helping, causing them to glide and tumble in peculiar but graceful patterns in slow-motion. This movement appears to mimic the swaying movements of the seaweed and kelp. Only close observation reveals movement of an eye or tiny fins.

    http://k-12.pisd.edu/Schools/Mitchell/Sea_Life/seahorses_monica.htm
Sea horses are interesting animals. Many people don't know that sea horses are actually fish. Their scientific name is Hippo Campus. There are 35 types of sea horses and they have many different colors. Sea horses are in the same family as the pipe fish and sea dragons. They live in shallow, coastal environments. They live above the 50 ft. deep water level. Almost every sea horse is in great danger. It is because they are captured and sold for the aquarium trade. The environment in the aquarium is not suitable for them. They are often sold for reasons, such as to aid research for curing diseases. They are even sold as souvenirs. Some sea horses are also disappearing because of the fishing that disturbs or destroys their home. Water pollution poisons their food, so when they eat the food, they die.
  • Survival Camouflage Can change color when hiding from enemy Curls its tail around its snout and makes itself very small Cirri helps the sea horses. When an animal puts the sea horse in its mouth, the cirri hurts the predator because it is too sharp. So, the animal spits the sea horse out.
  • Sea horses are not active fish. Since they are not active fish, it moves very slowly. So it is hard for sea horses to survive without camouflage. They cannot swim very fast. Also, the cirri on their head helps the sea horses. It is because the cirri is very sharp, so when the predator starts eating the sea horse it spits it out because it is too sharp. Another survival for sea horses are their tail. The tail helps because it is very strong. When a predator tries to pull the sea horse, the sea horse can grab on a corral with its tail, and stay on it so the predator won't be able to pull them away from the fast hold. They are very strong. The only way to pull the sea horse off it's corral or fast hold would be to tickle it gently. Sea horses are very ticklish. Their predators are large fish, birds, crabs, and sea turtles.

Hi there, Seahorses belong to a fish family called Syngnathidae. This also includes Pipefish and Trumpet fish. This family is one of many familes of ray finned fish (bony rays in the fins). Most fish belong to this group, except Sharks, Rays and Coelocanths. They occur in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans and generally hang around shallow, protected water. Trumpet fish are generally more coral reef dwellers, pipefish and seadragons and sea horses all hang out in areas with lots of structure. Seahorses are weak swimmers and are really happy when they can curl their tails around something and wait for small prey items to swim past them. Little swimming crustaceans like amphipods are a fav food! Try a websearch for more detailed information about this fish family. cheers, Alastair Current Queue Current Queue for Zoology Zoology archives Try the links in the MadSci Library for more information on Zoology MadSci Home Information Search ...
