Hippocampus ingens
Pacific seahorse, Caballito de mar Family: SYNGNATHIDAE The scientific name is derived from the Greek hippos , "horse", and campus , "sea monster."
Description
Seahorses have a horse-shaped head and a body and tail which is covered with concentric bony rings. Their colors are variable including black, gray, brown, red, and yellow, and match their surroundings. The Pacific seahorse, when found in San Diego Bay, is generally yellowish. Size: The largest of the 32 known species of seahorses in the world, the Pacific seahorse can grow to 30 cm (1 foot) in length.
Range and Habitat
Seahorses are found in shallow temperate and tropical waters, around shallow reefs, seagrasses, and mangroves
Natural History
Though their unusual shape makes it hard to believe, seahorses are indeed fish. In seahorses, the female uses her ovipositor to deposit her eggs in the male's brood pouch where they are fertilized and remain until hatched. After a period of time, varying from ten days to six weeks, depending on the species and water temperature, the male gives birth to hundreds of live, tiny, seahorses, which are miniature replicas of the adults. Seahorses feed on bottom-swarming organisms, such as mysids and other plankton; lacking teeth and stomachs, they suck the individually selected food through their bony snout with a very rapid snap of the head.

Sea Horses
Seahorses have fascinated humans for centuries. They were captured and kept in aquariums where they were studied. But, it is only recently that they have been studied in their natural habitat by Dr. Amanda Vincent. She has written many articles about her observations of seahorses. She believes that the populations of seahorses around the world are declining quickly and that we must take measures to protect them. She is working with native people trying to find ways for them to earn a living without catching and selling seahorses. Dr. Vincent received the Rolex Award for Conservation Enterprise in 1998 - a watch and some money to help with her studies! There are about 35 identified species of seahorses around the world. Seahorses are amazing little creatures that are actually classified as fish. They are very different from fish because they have no scales, lack teeth, and do not have a stomach. Their eyes move independently. Imagine being able to move one eye in one direction and one in another like seahorses can! Being very slow swimmers, they can change colour quickly to blend with their habitat so their enemies have a difficult time seeing them. Seahorses eat small crustaceans. In turn, seahorses are eaten by crabs and large fish.

Overview With their whimsical charm, seahorses inspire an almost universal reaction of wonder and delight. They have been favored in fairytales as friendly denizens of the deep, the mythical steeds of mermen, and have been prized as aquarium specimens and sought after for medicinal uses. Their unusual body form evokes comparisons to other animals; seahorses have been said to have the snout of an aardvark, the spines of a puffer fish, the pouch of a kangaroo, the independent eyes of a lizard, the prehensile tail of a monkey, the armor-plated body of a stegosaurus, and the color-changing capability of a chameleon. But it is the remarkable resemblence of the head to that of a miniature horse that makes these creatures so immediately recognizable and popular [ Davis The National Aquarium in Baltimore is running an exhibit, "Seahorses: Beyond Imagination", that provides a live display of 18 species of these exquisite creatures [

N-719 Seahorses, Pipefishes and Their Relatives - A Comprehensive Guide to Syngnathiformes by Rudie H. Kuiter 240 pages, hardback, 2000 $39.95 "Seahorses are amongst the most unusual of all fishes and probably the most "unfish-like". They have an upright posture, a head bent at an angle, a tubed snout with a small mouth at the tip, and a strong prehensile tail to grab onto things. A look that is far from the familiar scaly creature caught on line and hook. It is not surprising that many people find it difficult to believe that they are actually a kind of fish, one that belongs to the same phylum as the Goldfish or Herring, that at some stage were thought to be insects. However, Seahorses are only the better known members of a large diverse group, the Pipefish family. These fishes have adapted to specific niches in reef or algal habitats, and a long time of evolution has created this numerous and highly diverse family. Besides the Seahorses, this family encompasses Seadragons, Pipefishes and Pipehorses, amongst which are some of the most fascinating and interesting examples of adaptations to nature."

Sea horses are small fish that have armored plates all over their body. There are about 50 different species of sea horses around the world. They live in seaweed beds in warm water. Sea horses range in size from two inches (5 cm) long (the Dwarf sea horse) to about 1 foot (30 cm) long. The most unusual seahorse is the Australian sea horse, which has leaf-like camouflage all over its body, making it almost disappear in the seaweed bed.

For its generous support The seahorse trade Christmas ornament made with dead seahorses The international trade in seahorses ( Hippocampus spp ) for traditional medicines, aquarium pets, and curios is large, valuable and seemingly unsustainable. The combination of direct catch, incidental catch in trawl nets (bycatch), and habitat destruction has placed seahorse populations at risk. Conservation and management plans are urgently required, but these will have to recognize the needs of human communities that depend on seahorses for income and medicines. The importance of habitat damage to marine communities cannot be overstated, but it may be easier to begin by resolving issues associated with direct target catch. The majority of landed seahorses go to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and its derivatives (e.g., Japanese and Korean traditional medicines). TCM is recognized by the World Health Organization as a viable health care option, and has a global constituency. Seahorses are used to treat a range of conditions, including respiratory disorders such as asthma, impotence and other sexual dysfunctions, and general lethargy and pain. Traditional Jamu medicine in Indonesia and folk medicine in the Philippines also make use of seahorses. Seahorses, as sold for traditional medicines

A seahorse is actually a fish!
Instead of scales, the seahorse has an inflexible armour of overlapping bony plates. Lying just beneath its skin, these plates encase the seahorse. Like other fish, it also has an internal skeleton. It lacks a tail fin and pelvic fins. It swims slowly by beating its dorsal fins, and uses the tiny pectoral fins on its 'cheeks' to stabilise itself.
Adapted to calm waters with lots of hiding places, a seahorse cannot swim fast. A seahorse can make a short burst of speed when in danger, but most of the time it swims extremely slowly or remains stationary. Instead, it relies on camouflage to hide from both predators and prey. It uses its flexible, muscular tail to hang on to vegetation and other supports. It can also change colours to match its surroundings. Some species have flaps and projections out of their body to match the vegetation around them.
