Seahorses are real creatures. Although they combine the anatomy of many other creatures like a character from a child's book, seahorses are not legends or myths like mermaids. Seahorses are vertebrate fish. Technically, their taxanomic classification is the Kingdom Animalia , Phylum Chordata , Sub-phylum Vertebrata , Class Osteichthyes and Order Perciformes . They belong to the family Syngnathidae syn - together or with [Greek] and gnathos - jaw [Greek]) which includes seadragons, pipefishes and pipehorses. Seahorses make up the genus Hippocampus hippo - horse [Greek] and campos - sea animal [Greek]). They live in warm or temperate salt water off the coasts of Australia and the United States. They make their homes in reefs and seaweed. They are typically found at depths between .5 - 30 meters. In the reefs and seaweed, they have good protection from predators as well as a plenty of twigs to anchor themselves to. There are around 40 different species of seahorses. This includes: SCIENTIFIC NAME COMMON NAME Hippocampus abdominalis Big Belly seahorse Hippocampus aimei Freshwater seahorse Hippocampus algiricus West African seahorse Hippocampus angustus Western Australian seahorse or Narrow-bellied seahorse Hippocampus antiquorum Hippocampus barbouri Barbour's seahorse Hippocampus bargibanti Bargibant's seahorse or Pygmy seahorse Hippocampus borboniensis Réunion seahorse Hippocampus breviceps Short-snouted seahorse or Short-head seahorse Hippocampus brevirostris Short-snouted seahorse or Short-nosed seahorse

Sea horses information
Learn about sea horses; information on one of the ocean's most enchanting creatures. Experts are trying to come up with ways to protect it form extinction.
Experts are working hard to protect one of the ocean’s most exotic creatures. The creature has a crested, curled tail, and a tiny, horse-like head. It has enchanted people for thousands of years. What is this delicate, diminutive sea creature? Why, it’s a sea horse, of course! In ancient Rome, the people believed that when Neptune, the god of the ocean, traveled, he swished through the water in a chariot drawn by gigantic, enchanted horses who could breathe underwater. When fishermen first saw the minute sea horses, they thought that they must be the offspring of Neptune’s horses, and they were fascinated with the little creatures. Now we know that sea horses are, of course, not horses at all, they are merely a unique kind of fish. But these petite sea creatures with the elongated snout still seem as magical to us as they were to the ancient Romans: They are playful and graceful, and divers often stop to watch these marvelous creatures frolic around in the depths of the sea. Sea horses don’t have scales the way that many other kinds of fish do. Instead, they have bony plates underneath their skin, like a small suit of armor to protect them from harm. There are numerous different kinds of sea horses, and they come in varying colors and sizes. Sea horses can be very tiny, and some are no larger than the length of the fingernail on your pinkie finger. Many types of sea horses have a unique way to camouflage themselves and hide from their enemies. Some can change colors, and chameleon-like, blend in with their surroundings. Some sea horses look so much like their surroundings that it is difficult to see them unless one is looking closely, and this helps to hide them from predators. One kind of sea horse even grows hair-like skin extensions so that they will blend in with the plant life whose fronds wave gently in the water of the ocean.

Possible Futures for Sea Horses
Sea Horse Disappearance

Over the last five years sea horse populations have been dwindling. They are becoming increasingly popular for Chinese medicine practices, display in private homes, and for curious consumers (Vincent 1997).
Chinese Medicine
The use of sea horses for tradition Chinese medicine takes the lives of about 20 million sea horses per year. They are used to treat a variety of ailments including asthma, arteriosclerosis, incontinence, impotence, thyroid disorders, skin ailments, broken bones, and heart disease. The use of sea horses for medicine is no longer limited to the Chinese either. It is becoming popular in other Asian nations as well. However, although sea horses are popular for their medicinal value and are claimed to be effective treatments, no research has been done to prove if they actually are effective treatments (Vincent 1997). Ornamental Display
Keeping ornamental fish has become the second most popular hobby in North America (first is photography) (Kaiser, et. al 1997). Most of the sea horses sold for use as ornamental are juveniles and die within a year (Vincent 1997). However, raising the sea horses for ornamental use has led to research about the ideal environments for breeding sea horses. This research has shown that though environmental conditions did not affect spawning intervals or brood size, the photo period had a significant effect on juvenile length. When the males were kept in 20 hours of light and 4 in darkness, their broods' average length was significantly larger than those kept in other light conditions.

Sea Horse
Encyclopedia Article Sea Horse , any of a number of small fishes of the same family as the pipefish . The name is derived from the resemblance of the head to that of a horse. It has long, tubular jaws much like a snout. The body is compressed, with an elongated tail, and the integument (external covering) is a series of large, rectangular bony plates, with a series of spines and projections along the lines of juncture. These spines, together with the divided, streamerlike fins of some species, give them a strong resemblance to the seaweeds among which they live. About 30 species are found in various warm and temperate seas. All keep near the shore, often developing in brackish water. Like the pipefishes, the males take charge of the eggs, which are placed in an abdominal pouch and remain there until they hatch. The common sea horse of the Atlantic coast of North America is one of the largest species, reaching a length of more than 13 cm (more than 5 in). Scientific classification: Sea horses make up the genus Hippocampus in the family Syngnathidae. The common sea horse is classified as

Another Review at MyShelf.Com I Sea Horses by Dawn Van Zant
I Sea Horses is an imaginative story of a pack of wild horses who decide to take up residence in the sea. At first, most of the horses are wary of moving to such a different environment, "A rust colored mare declared in a shrill/ 'Oh my goodness some day I might have to grow gills!/ What will happen to my coat and my mane in the sea?/ I'll be all tangled and weedy, it's too messy for me!" However, after everyone gives voice to their fears, they agree to follow their leader, and subsequently, become colorful sea horses. While the premise of the story is cute and makes for a great children's book, the execution does not live up the unique and fun story line. Told in rhymed couplets, a difficult and often dangerous format for authors, the rhymes are often highly contrived and forced. "Could it be that they wished for a new home to be free?/ Could it be they could see the future of wild horses to be?" The illustrations, done by the author's teenage daughter, are great and lend a fabulous representation of the characters to the text. It proves that young people can be successful, and I was happy to see that her artwork was quite good. She uses great colors and contrast, however, her wonderful illustrations have been cropped to fit into small circles (bubbles) that only grace every few pages. There are several spreads with no artwork at all, other than a bubbly blue and gray background. The bubbly background was a cute idea, but it doesn't complement the text and will probably not hold the interest of the small children whom this text is created for.
