25 years at sea: MSU and UM in partnership
For a quarter of a century, MSU and the University of Michigan (UM) have found common ground in the Michigan Sea Grant College Program. Begun at UM in 1969 and headquartered there, the program expanded into a partnership with MSU in 1977. That 25-year collaboration was celebrated this month with a seminar and reception for researchers, legislators, and other partners at the Michigan State Historical Museum in Lansing. The National Sea Grant College Program began in 1966 with funding from the National Science Foundation. Like the Land-Grant concept it’s modeled on, the Sea Grant Program extends research results to communities near bodies of water. With the creation of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1972, the National Sea Grant College Program transferred to that agency. Michigan’s program receives additional funding from state, tribal, business, and other sources to carry out scientific and educational programs in the Great Lakes region. Extension agents have helped thousands of coastal residents, decision-makers, and resource managers in resolving problems, recognizing opportunities, and broadening understanding of the Great Lakes. Research results appear in hundreds of

Sea Urchins Introduction Descriptions Red Sea Urchin Purple Sea Urchin ... References This work is sponsored in part by NOAA Department of Commerce , through the California Sea Grant College Program, and in part by the California State Resources Agency . April 1995 Introduction Sea urchins are members of a large group of marine invertebrates in the phylum Echinodermata (spiny skinned animals), that also include starfish, sea cucumbers, sea lilies, and brittle stars (Kato and Schroeter, 1985; Turgeon, et al., 1988). All sea urchins have a hard calcareous shell called a test, which is covered with a thin epithelium and is usually armed with spines. The spines are used for locomotion, protection, and for trapping drifting algae for food. Between the spines, are tube feet that are used in food capture, locomotion, and for holding on to the substrate. Sea urchins also have small pinchers, called pedicellarine, that are used for defense and for clutching food (Parker and Kalvaas, 1992; Kato and Schroeter, 1985). The mouth is located on the underside. It consists of a complex array of skeletal elements, plates, and teeth arranged in five symmetry called the "Aristotle's lantern." The mouth leads to the digestive tract which empties through the anus located on the top of the test (Kato and Schroeter, 1985).

Lake Champlain Sea Grant is a cooperative program of the University of Vermont and Plattsburgh State University of New York and part of a national network, linked by the National College Sea Grant Program . Our mission is to apply university-based research and technologies to issues relating to the responsible use of Lake Champlain resources. Sea Grant Extension programs endeavor to change public practices based on the adoption of new, research based information. In the Champlain Basin, Sea Grant Extension educational activities typically focus on water quality, watershed stewardship, fisheries, nuisance aquatic species and other issues. Dissemination techniques include fact sheets, workshops, meetings, newspaper articles, radio and TV interviews, and videos on public access television. Additional information about Lake Champlain Sea Grant administration and research can be found at our primary website , hosted at the University of Vermont.

Sea Grant exists to serve the needs of coastal communities and promote economic prosperity through sustainable marine and coastal resource management. As such, our Coastal Communities and Economies theme encompasses all UH Sea Grant activities. Sea Grant promotes the concept of sustainability for coastal communities and economies by creating a networking environment where an ever-increasing circle of students, faculty, government agencies, and community organizations are introduced to sustainable solutions to coastal community problems that preserve the integrity of resources and quality of life for future generations.
In addition, UH Sea Grant :

Oregon Sea Grant's Experience with Watershed Restoration Goes National
By John Baur If salmon cannot adapt to the human world - and indeed it looks as if they can't - humans will have to adapt to the salmon's if we want the fish to once again flourish. Chinook salmon Local efforts to save Oregon's native salmon runs by restoring their habitat are becoming a model for national watershed restoration efforts. To the people of the Pacific Northwest, the salmon is more than a fish. It's symbolic of the region's self-perception of its pioneer heritage and close-to-nature lifestyle, a powerful totem to native peoples and a mainstay of the fishing economy. But in the last decades of the 20th century, the symbol changed. Overfishing, changing land development patterns and a host of little-understood natural changes have turned the once-abundant fish into a symbol of scarcity. A decline in salmon numbers actually was first noted officially in the 1890s, but since the late 1970s those numbers have dropped sharply, raising the specter of imminent extinction for many native populations. NOAA's Marine Fisheries Service has declared several population groups of salmon threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

San Diego County Home About Us Calendar Contact ... Seafood Quality Sea Grant is a state and federally-funded program providing science-based information to people making and influencing decisions for the wise development, management and use of our coastal resources - now and in the future. The program is based on a partnership between the nation's universities and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)that began in 1966, when the U.S. Congress passed the National Sea Grant College Program Act. Sea Grant Extension serves as the link between the marine community and the University of California to help citizens and clientele groups solve problems related to marine resources. Through informal education programs and day-to-day contact, extension staff are able to assist individuals and groups in making informed decisions about the use, development, and conservation of those resources. Extension's efforts are focused on three major areas: commercial fisheries and aquaculture, coastal resource development, and marine science education. Our Extension office is part of the network of Cooperative Extension offices throughout California with sponsership of the University of California and participating County governments. The San Diego office of Sea Grant Extension is located at 5555 Overland Ave., Bldg. 4, San Diego, CA 92123.
