Emory D. Anderson Named Sea Grant Fisheries Program Director
WASHINGTON D.C. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has named Dr. Emory D. Anderson program director for fisheries at NOAA's National Sea Grant College Program Office in Silver Spring, Md. Dr. Anderson will work on enhancing coordination between Sea Grant and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service. "Dr. Anderson's career as a professional in fisheries science has spanned nearly 30 years, with broad experience at the national and international levels in both research and administration, experience that seems tailor-made for his new position with Sea Grant," said Dr. Ronald Baird, director of the National Sea Grant College Program. He most recently served as a senior scientist for NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Center in Woods Hole, Mass. There he was chairman of the Northeast Regional Stock Assessment Workshop process, which is responsible for performing assessments of fisheries resources off the northeast U.S. coast between North Carolina and Canada. He also served as the center's liaison to the New England Fishery Management Council and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council. He received a B.S. in education (mathematics) from Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, in 1961 and a Ph.D. in fisheries biology from the University of Minnesota in 1969.

Citizens trained to be fisheries leaders
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 4, 2003
MANITOWOC, Wis. (Oct. 4, 2003) - Sport and commercial fishers, fisheries managers and scientists from around Lake Michigan converged in Manitowoc today to provide interested citizens the knowledge they need to become effective leaders on fishery issues. The knowledge required can seem as deep as the lake itself. In the day-long seminar, 27 people examined the status of the fishery today, how it has changed in recent decades, the complex effects wrought by exotic species, and the equally complex web of interlocking agencies and institutions that work together to manage the lake's fisheries. A group discussion in the afternoon focused on ways to increase citizens' access to decision-making processes. Increasing contact with legislators was identified as an important means of achieving such access. Attendees at the workshop came from all four states surrounding Lake Michigan. They included representatives of Trout Unlimited, the Milwaukee chapter of the Great Lakes Sport Fishing Club, Walleyes for Tomorrow, charter captains and commercial fishers. The workshop was part of the Great Lakes Sea Grant Fisheries Leadership Institute, a program sponsored by the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network. Similar workshops are being held this fall and winter for each of the Great Lakes and for each state in the Great Lakes basin.

Hot Topics Home Page Marine Invasive Species Changing Fisheries Spotlight : Stories of accomplishment Making a Difference Since the mid 1990s, Oregon Sea Grant has supported research and outreach programs directed at meeting the information needs of fishing families, businesses, and communities. Sea Grant has brought together researchers from many disciplines to examine issues common to people who fish for a living, from regulatory change to the challenges facing families whose breadwinners spend long periods away at sea. These efforts have born fruit in ongoing collaborative relationships with such groups as the Women's Coalition for Pacific Fisheries, and in continued efforts to shine light on the human faces behind America's fisheries. In addition, ongoing Sea Grant research and outreach exploring new products and processes that help fishers and seafood processors get more value from limited resources.

Recreational and commercial fisheries comprise multi-billion dollar industries in Florida. Increasing demands for both high quality seafood products and memorable recreational fishing opportunities have placed increased pressure on the stocks of finfish and shellfish species which inhabit the coastal waters of Florida. Increased usage associated with this demand dictates the need for more effective fisheries management programs. Effective management requires knowledge on the life history of the target species, sustainable catch levels, appropriate distribution of the catch among commercial and recreational users, by-catch associated with different types of fishing gear, impact of fishing activities on essential habitats, and many other issues. Biological, economic, and social expertise must be brought to bear by research and educational programs

Fisheries
Addressing Fisheries Issues in the Modern Era The goal of the Sea Grant Fisheries Initiative is to provide the nation with information required for managing fisheries in an environmentally sensitive, economically sound and sustainable manner through an integrated research and outreach program. Sea Grant seeks to address fisheries issues in nine key areas (new approaches to fisheries management, population dynamics, socio-economics, advanced sampling technology, stock enhancement, essential fisheries habitat, harvest technology/conservation engineering, fisheries oceanography and Great Lakes fisheries) in partnership with state and Federal natural resource agencies and organizations and with stakeholders. Sea Grant Produces National Benefits
