ART AND ARCHITECTURE
More than 4,000 years ago the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers began to teem with lifefirst the Sumerian, then the Babylonian, Assyrian, Chaldean, and Persian empires. Here too excavations have unearthed evidence of great skill and artistry. From Sumeria have come examples of fine works in marble, diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuli. Of the many portraits produced in this area, some of the best are those of Gudea, ruler of Lagash. Some of the portraits are in marble, others, such as the one in the Louvre in Paris, are cut in gray-black diorite. Dating from about 2400 BC, they have the smooth perfection and idealized features of the classical period in Sumerian art. Sumerian art and architecture was ornate and complex. Clay was the Sumerians' most abundant material. Stone, wood, and metal had to be imported. Art was primarily used for religious purposes. Painting and sculpture was the main median used. Marble Statues The famous votive stone/ marble sculptures from Tell Asmar represent tall, bearded figures with huge, staring eyes and long, pleated skirts. Enlarged eyes were found on many statues The tallest figure is about 30 inches in height. He represents the god of vegetation. The next tallest represents a mother goddess-mother goddesses were common in many ancient cultures. They were worshipped in the hope that they would bring fertility to women and to crops. (Another connection to African culture.)

Overview
Polychromy and Monochromy Images for the Cult and for Private Devotion
A sculpture is created either by adding material to a core or removing it from a block. In the additive method, the sculptor builds up his work from the inside out in a soft material, generally clay or wax; the clay is then hardened by firing, while the wax is destroyed when the form is cast in bronze . The subtractive method is much more common in the late Middle Ages.
Over half of the sculptures produced in the late medieval period were carved from wood ( Saint Anthony Abbot
Equal mastery of wood and stone sculpture is a technical achievement, since the two materials present different qualities ( Virgin and Child ). Stone is brittle because of its crystalline structure, while wood is tougher because of its cellular structure. Although stone breaks easily if dropped or struck, it offers greater resistance to precision cutting with a chisel than wood does. The sculptor must therefore combine physical strength with a steady hand, removing material little by little as he works toward the intended form.

Sculpture Department Sculpture simply means the creation of objects, using various kinds of materials. The objects that surround us in daily life are all creations with specific functions. The sculptor imagines new objects for no other purpose than self-expression.
In Kyoto Seika University`s Department of Sculpture, students initially work towards proper understanding of the mechanisms and techniques involved in creating a piece of sculpture, and their perception of color and shape is developed. The relationships between person and object, and object to object, are analyzed in both a psychological sense and a physical sense, to provide better understanding of this art form through both subjective and objective observation.
By exploring the propertes of many different materials, a variety of themes and motives, and by gaining broad personal experience, students discover working and conceptual methods most comfortable to them in developing their subjective imagination. Living in our highly technological world, how do you feel about personal creativity? Do you have original ideas? If so, in sculpture you`ll find opportunities to create new, unprecedented forms of artwork, and to use materials arising from new technological advances in addition to familiar materials from the natural world. Our students find ways to create works of art relating to this modern world not only in the material sense but also in a mental and spiritual sense, works that are highly innovative in the field of sculpture.

Glass is an art medium with seemingly endless technical versatility and a rich, long history. Basic elements of sand and soda lime are combined with coloring agents, then melted together to produce the raw material. The raw (soft) glass prepared in Murano, Italy, has a great reputation anchored in centuries of appreciation for its high quality. Although this well deserved reputation persists today, good quality glass is produced elsewhere, particularly in the United States
(Corning, Bull’s Eye and Schott glass).
This essay will attempt to clarify technical glass jargon and to describe in simple terms the commonly used glass art techniques. Most of those are illustrated in the sculpted letters created by the artists participating in The ABC of Glass Art . References to images of their work are throughout the text.
No one knows exactly where and when experimenting with Blown Glass , began. The earliest examples are circa 100 BC. The technique spread rapidly across the Roman Empire early in the Common Era. Although glass blowing has reached a high level of sophistication, very little of the technique itself has changed since the early times. To create a blown glass object, the molten glass is

    Shona Artists and Crafts People
Shona artists and crafts people have been working in different media for generations. These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings illustrated in our African art catalog . While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo. Most of the artifacts from this location have been moved to museums in Cape Town, South Africa or London. It is generally agreed that Zimbabwean stone sculpture as seen today began during the late colonial period of the 1950's and 1960's. During this period the artists and artisans depicted many of the traditional Shona and other tribal spiritual myths such as the Nyaminyami (River God) pictured here.

Makonde carving c.1974 African art is any form of art or material culture that originates from the continent of Africa . This article discusses primarily visual art; for information on African music, see Music of Africa The arts and material culture of the African continent constitute one of the most diverse and innovative artistic legacies on the planet. Though many casual observers tend to generalize "traditional" African art, the continent is actually full of a multitude of peoples, societies, and civilizations, each with a unique visual culture. Despite this incredible diversity, there do seem to be some unifying artistic themes when considering the totality of visual culture from the continent of Africa. Formal Innovation - Unlike "Western" socities, where artworks tended to be produced according to strict canons of representation, many African societies encouraged innovation and creativity of both style and form among their artists. This innovation and diversity can be seen not only across long expanses of time and geography, but also even from village to village. Visual Abstraction - African artworks tend to favor visual abstraction over naturalistic representation. This is because many African artworks, regardless of medium, tend to

People have been creating sculpture for as long as humans have been around. Its part of our everyday lives. Materials such as bronze, marble, wood, and clay are used to shape likenesses of objects, people or events. Over the centuries sculptures have changed the way their art looks while still maintaining some of the earliest techniques used. The Greek civilization, established before 800 BC, has left behind many wondrous sculptures helping us to learn of their times and lifestyles. Much of this Greek sculpture dealt with the naked body. Nakedness was not unusual for the Greeks. In their olympic games the athletes wore no clothing so that their performances were not restricted. Their statues were usually carved "in the round", meaning they were not attached to anything else but are free-standing and carved on all sides. Eventually the Greek statues changed and they began to depict people in more natural looking stances, later expressing deep emotion as well. Forms of sculptures were also used to tell stories. A Relief is a block of stone that was only cut on one side. "Trojan's Column" in Rome (114AD) is almost 100 feet tall with a continual spiral of reliefs telling a story beginning from the base and spiraling up around the column.
