In a sense the Mughal karkhana was perhaps the country's first modern studio-cum-atelier where a new philosophy of Persian art and craft skills was taught, gradually melding with, and shaping, the Indian craft ethos, to usher in one of the brilliant flowering of arts and crafts history has ever seen.... The fabled tapestry of India's hoary crafts - from sublime stone sculpture to the finest of muslins and silks, exquisitely carved ivory and marble, wonderously crafted jewellery, ritual and functional vessels and much else - suffered its first stinging blow with the coming of the industrial revolution. In the 17th century, writer-jeweller Tavernier wrote glowingly of India's fabled craft and Pyland de Leval referred to the "adroitly wonderous manufacturers of Inde". By the 19th century, Indian textiles had given way to machine made cloth, and factory made goods had pushed craft to near oblivion. Kamal Sahai
Simultaneously, the entry of non-governmental agencies, as well as individual artists, designers, fashion and style gurus, architects and product designers has played a vital role in setting new directions for craft growth and development as well as created new palettes and textures of craft expression.

2005-07-14 / Taiwan News, Staff Reporter / By Seven Chen Translated by David Schnell Photos courtesy of the Sanyi Museum of Wood Sculpture Sanyi Township in Miaoli County is known not for its mountain scenery alone, but also for its cultural industry of woodcarving. Workshops line a road leading to the Sanyi Museum of Wood Sculpture, which is known as "wood carving street". This street attracts art collectors and tourists alike. Although some of the carvings sold are imports from China, this has had the benefit of encouraging local sculptors to create unique styles, and has raised the bar for innovation among Sanyi artists. A visit to the Museum of Wood Sculpture just off of Youjhuan Street, is the culmination of a look into Sanyi woodcarving. The museum's exterior boasts an elegant design, while the interior was purposely kept simple to focus attention on the pieces on display.

Stone Carving -Tools of the Trade
Walter S. Arnold, Sculptor/Stone Carver
Chicago, U.S.A. I carve sculpture in limestone and marble, using traditional tools and techniques which I learned as an apprentice in Italy and as a journeyman carver on the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. This site is filled with examples of the work I created with these skills, including my gargoyles and stone fireplaces Stone carving tools have not changed significantly since the technique of forging steel was developed. The pneumatic hammer was introduced between 1885 and 1890 (powered by huge steam driven air compressors), and has pretty much replaced the wooden mallet and iron hammer. Carbide tipped tools began appearing in the middle of the 20th century. Most limestone carvers still prefer the old hand forged chisels, and keep a wooden mallet close at hand. The basic concepts of carved stone work haven't changed much in thousands of years, even as the tools have slowly evolved. The three basic types of chisels remain the same: a point for roughing out the stone, tooth chisels (also called claw tools) for shaping and modeling the forms, and flat chisels for the finished surfaces and details. Within each class there are endless variations; for example gouges, bull-noses and miter tools are all variations on the flat chisel. Measuring and copying of designs is done in a variety of ways, depending on the requirements of the job. Architectural moldings can be cut using templets (now cut from plastic instead of the traditional zinc), which are traced on the stone. Many carvings can be done by eye, copying a drawing or rough clay or plaster model. For example, when carving my
