Ceramics Department Advanced ceramics techniques were introduced to Japan from China during the fifth and sixth centuries, and were further developed in many places in this country. As with tea ceremony, Japanese ceramics evolved into an art form placing aesthetic values ahead of function, an excellence now recognized all over the world. To step into this traditional field, students previously had to enter an apprenticeship or a specialized school. The ceramics curriculum that we have developed at Kyoto Seika University is more appropriate to this university`s atmosphere, emphasizing a view of ceramics as a modern and creative art form, using clay as a medium of self-expression. We encourage students to be imaginative and diverse in their thinking. We do not believe in teaching ceramics: instead, we believe that our job is to stimulate the creativity of each individual. Students must themselves overcome the initial obstacles that occur when working in this field. During our four-year program, students absorb the technical side as well as the human side of this art form. These two aspects cannot be separated, as techniques are always selected according to human considerations.

What is sculpture?

The word sculpture originates from the Latin word sculpere Techniques
Carving
Dating from pre-historic times, carving is a process in which the artist subtracts or cuts away from a solid material to reach the desired form. It can be a very painstaking and time consuming method because of the hard and weighty materials, such as marble or other stones, that are often used. However, artists also carve softer substances such as wood and even soap. Modeling
Casting
Casting is a method of obtaining the permanence of a modeled work by making a mold and casting it in a durable material such as bronze. Two methods of casting are used: sand casting and the cire-perdue or "lost wax" process. The lost-wax process is more widely used, however, both have been frequently employed since antiquity. (Further information on lost wax casting will follow.) Construction and Assemblage
Emerging in the twentieth-century, the techniques of assemblage and construction consist of combining and joining various materials to form a three-dimensional object. These methods originated from the technique collage , which was popularized by the Cubists during the early part of the twentieth century.

    Curriculum
    Courses
Sculpture is one of the oldest forms of art, and as sculptors, we are heirs to a tradition that forms an invaluable record of past civilizations. Although we can learn a great deal from this heritage, we must observe our present society through the eyes of a contemporary artist and express our vision in an appropriate manner. After all, even though we may think that the clothes of a century ago were very elegant, we would never dream of wearing them today. Modern industry produces many new types of materials, such as steel, cement, plastics, glass, and aluminum. These new materials not only bring significant changes to our lifestyles, but also affect our notion of what sculpture is and can be. It is imperative that we use new materials and technology to create new and bold sculptural images for our present-day society.
Students in the Department of Sculpture acquire basic skills by working with shapes observed in nature and undergo instruction in various practical techniques. They then proceed to more personal areas of self-expression. Close student-faculty relations are essential for the exchange of ideas and the development of sculptural concepts; however, although the faculty is always ready to give advice and guidance to students, it is important for each student to develop an independent and self-sufficient attitude towards sculptural practice.

They are: ART 2701C "Shaping Form and Space;" ART 2702C8 "Gravity and Buoyancy;" ART 2930C "Sculptural Appetizers" which is offered on an irregular basis as a special topics course; and ART2804C "Spatial Interventions." ART 2701C Sculpture: Shaping Form and Space
ART 2702C Sculpture: Gravity and Buoyancy
This course provides an introduction to the more complex three-dimensional principles of mass, weight, gravity, compression as well as lightness, buoyancy and resilience. Student work may incorporate things that float, inflate, suspend, or stretch. Students learn techniques for creating specific physical effects in the sculptures they make. As in ART 2706, students are not introduced to highly technical processes as these are better taught in the 3000-level courses. However, students are expected to put into practice a high level of craftsmanship with the simplest of materials. All assignments are informed by the context of the development of twentieth century sculpture and assignments are supplemented with slide/lectures, videos and field trips. ART 2930C Sculptural Appetizers
This course is a technical course that introduces students to several sculptural processes, including steel forging using a gas forge, metal fabrication using gas, arc and mig welding techniques, basic woodworking with an emphasis on jointing, and basic wiring for simple electrical objects such as lamps, motion detectors and fans. The course is designed to introduce prospective sculpture majors to some of the crafting issues that will be useful later on during the program. The course emphasizes the mastery of specific skills that are then applied to a sculpture or functional object.
