ZAMBONI Driver Dream Job: Scuba Diver Frei trained for his recreational scuba instructing certification 12 years ago in British Columbia, where the water is neither as clear as the Caribbean, nor as warm, but he swears it to be one of the most beautiful places to dive in the world. Dive In It's night. You're in the middle of the ocean, exploring sea walls consisting entirely of vibrant life, and you see something as large as yourself, but not human, coming towards you. It's a sea lion. The enormous animal touches you, and starts playing. Your fear subsides. This is the recollection of scuba diving instructor Pat Frei from his coldest dive ever - 35 degrees - in British Columbia. When he came to the surface, it was snowing. "There is nothing like floating on the surface of the ocean, warm, happy, and shining your light up into the sky as the snow falls around you like tiny stars," he said. That night, bioluminescence spread out all around him (certain organisms in the water emit light when disturbed, such as when a ship passes). "You find yourself surrounded by stars, and all around you in the water the plankton brightly mark your passing," he said. "It is perhaps the most beautiful experience I have ever had."

126. Ocean Scenery - Scuba Diving For Recreation
An article from Recreate.com about scuba diving off the California coast.
http://www.recreate.com/Pages/articles/cclarke2.shtml
In high school I took a scuba diving class for a few weeks that introduced me to this marine world with its interesting and sometimes bizarre flora and fauna. At first we did our dives in the safety of a swimming pool with a certified instructor coaching us through the basics; clearing our masks under water, adjusting our weight belts to achieve the right buoyancy, and buddy breathing in case we or our partners ran out of air. Then we graduated to making dives in open water at the beach. When the invitation came to go diving with my friends on that Saturday morning, it had been a few years since I had put on a wet suit and tanks. I was excited to go with them to the beach. The view from the shore was inspiring. With the powerful waves crashing on the rocks and the surf tumbling on the sand, you could tell that something dynamic was happening under the surface. When I ventured beneath the waves it was a different world. The salty water was cold in comparison to the warm sands on shore. The green trees above were imitated by kelp beds below swaying and stirring with the swells. The air with its crisp, bright sounds was replaced by water with its muted yet long range sound effects. Visibility was reduced to feet instead of miles and yet there was so much life swimming around me and competing for my attention that I forgot the shadows beyond the veil of silt. Perhaps not being able to see as far is part of the thrill, knowing that some finned danger could be lurking beyond your sight. When you are with friends though, and enjoying the adventure, diving is great recreation. Seeing odd fish or an octopus. Floating with the golden kelp as bright, colorful fish play hide and seek around you. This is an excellent way to recreate and revitalize your senses.
