SCUBA Diving
Recreational diving using Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) is an increasingly popular activity. Some commercial and military dives also make use of SCUBA equipment but recreational diving is by far the most common. Air from a tank is breathed using a regulator, which ensures that the diver receives it at the correct pressure to counteract the effect of the surrounding water.
The pressure within a diver's body tissues must equal the surrounding pressure. For example, at a depth of 80msw the pressure within the body must be equal to nine times normal atmospheric pressure (10msw = 2ata, therefore 80msw = 9ata).
There are certain risks associated with SCUBA diving. Although several organisations exist to promote safer practice the fact that there are so many divers ensures that the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit treats an increasing number with diving related problems.
Some potential problems are discussed below. For information on decompression sickness (DCS), including symptoms and first aid, refer to the section on

Site Introduction

This site was written to provide qualified scuba divers and trainees alike with "easy to understand, practical guidance" on essential features to look for (or not) when they consider buying equipment. It covers everything from the bottom up for normal and more advanced recreational diving. This site is completely independent and not affiliated to any commercial enterprise. All too often we get conflicting guidance on what to buy and it can be difficult to know what is good, bad or ugly, particularly when we are new to the sport. As qualified divers we may be impressed by the latest fashion and seek features which may prove to be more trouble than they are worth. The amount of money that can be wasted can be frightening. The chart on the right demonstrates this only too adeptly and it is a real life example!

Scuba diving
From Wikitravel
Diving the wreck of the Zenobia, Larnaca Cyprus Scuba diving is a sport in which you swim underwater for extended periods using special equipment. The word Scuba is actually an acronym for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. Scuba diving is an excellent way to see some very beautiful sites: coral diving sites with their colourful sea life are the most famous but other scuba diving attractions include shipwrecks and caverns. Scuba diving can also be a very relaxing sport and in many places it's very beginner friendly. Many dive sites are accessible (under the care of an instructor) after a short briefing and training dive. You can learn to dive far more quickly than you can learn snow sports, for example. It's also suitable for people with a number of physical disabilities. As long as you can use the breathing equipment and are able to successfully propel yourself underwater you may be able to dive.
