FEATURE ARTICLE How to Choose the Right Hardware for Your Software MoldMaking Technology magazine conducted an informal survey to discover what is both the minimum and recommended hardware requirements that will work best with a moldmaker's CAD/CAM software. By Joanna Zawila MMT TOOLS

The choice of hardware makes a crucial difference to the productivity of a CAD/CAM system. Overall, experts would agree that hardware becomes obsolete rather rapidly. Therefore, it is helpful to keep up-to-date on the changes and check first with CAD/CAM suppliers when looking to upgrade, or to check with power users, user groups or friends who are operating the same software. Minimum requirements mean that the software will run but it may be slow or it may have to be replaced or upgraded more quickly. Recommended requirements will be more expensive, but the performance will be better. The results of the survey are as follows. Operating Systems
For operating systems , it appears that, at this time, Windowsr NT 4.0 is the optimum choice, followed closely by Windowsr 2000 Professional and Windows XP. Most CAD/CAM systems are available on Windowsr 95/98 editions, but according to some experts, those editions are not reliable or powerful enough. Some experts say that if a company must go with a minimum requirement, it would do better to choose Windows ME, Millenium Edition, because it provides more efficiency, organizational tools and security than Windowsr 95/98 versions. Others however, strongly disagree with this opinion and discourage its use. It would be best to discuss this subject with a CAD/CAM supplier before purchasing.

Introduction
Originally there were 2 pages for Ocante and Octane 2 information, but both systems are so close to each other that it makes sense to describe them on one page to stress similarities and differences. The Octane ("Speedracer") was SGIs 1997 new offering as a midrange workstation, that supports one or two processors on the desktop (the first Silicon Graphics machine to do that). One key element of it's architecture is using a "crossbar switch" instead of a traditional shared bus system. This allows two computer subsystems to talk to each other without interfering with the other activity in the machine. The crossbar switch on the Octane has seven ports to which the system components connect:
  • CPU / Memory
  • Graphics (XIO Slot A)
  • XIO Slot B
  • XIO Slot C
  • XIO Slot D
  • Bridge to IO (builtin)
  • Bridge to PCI (PCI requires additional PCI cardcage)

Hardware gesucht

Workgroup scanners need support, too. The Adrenaline 450 is a Fast SCSI controller that offers 10 Mbps throughput. It supports scanning applications that use TWAIN, ISIS®, and ImageControls, and unlike conventional SCSI boards, it offers the convenience of a single installation of the board and scanner driver. And like all Adrenaline products, it's certified and supported for document scanning.

From: Terry Barnaby ( terry@beam.ltd.uk
Date: Tue Sep 03 2002 - 03:56:48 EST Hi Gérard,
Thanks for the reply.
1. The PCI addresses of the SCSI controller look fine, (I enclose the output of
lspci -v for info).
2. We are running the driver with DMAMODE=0 as the Hawk PCI/Memory bridge
ASIC manual sates that it does not support PCI Dual Address cycles.
My original info was wrong in that both the working Mother board and non working
board has a 64bit PCI bus. As the driver is the same on both boards and the basic
kernel is correct this leads me to suspect either:
1. The Hawk Memory/PCI bridge chip is not being configured correctly.

The (way outdated) SGI FAQ Last updated 14 October, 2002, this document is divided up into these sections: s What's an Indy ? The Indy is a Unix workstation built by Silicon Graphics Incorporated of Mountain View, CA. Introduced in 1993, it uses the MIPS The Indy has been sold by several companies as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) product. In Germany, the box is still blue, but the Indy is labeled Siemens/Nixdorf RW410. These are R4000 100 MHz, with all original SGI parts. In the US, Indys may have been sold with a Tandem label, and were black. Here is a picture of a Tandem badged Challenge S along with a picture of the label on the bottom of the unit. The Challenge S is very similar in design to the Indy, and uses many of the same parts, such as the CPU modules, power supply, drives, and RAM. The Challenge S uses a different chassis (no holes cut in the back for keyboard and mouse), and an Indy motherboard with chips unstuffed (missing), like the VINO video, audio, keyboard/mouse interface, etc.
