The CEO of now-dead Kaleida Labs, the Apple-IBM joint venture, on what went wrong. From: Inc. Magazine, Aug 1996 By: Tom Ehrenfeld The CEO of now-dead Kaleida Labs, the Apple-IBM joint venture, on what went wrong document.write(ibHtml1);

Q. Kaleida opened with great fanfare in 1992, only to close its doors this year not long before Taligent, another joint venture of IBM and Apple, went belly-up as well. What's going on here?
A. Not what people think. The problem wasn't that Apple or IBM had stupid or bad people; they have excellent people. The joint-venture model itself was the problem. It's a business structure that simply can't work if your goal is to create something new. In hindsight, the Kaleida and Taligent failures and others like them were inevitable.
Q. But from an outsider's viewpoint this sort of start-up looks to have a lot going for it huge resources, in particular. Wasn't something like $50 million invested over Kaleida Labs' three-and-a-half-year history?

MeadCo ScriptX is a non-visual ActiveX control, originally designed to extend the scripting capabilities of the standard Microsoft Scripting Languages JScript and VBScript and to add more resemblance between the two. Currently the functionality provided by ScriptX can be conditionally grouped under the following headings: All ScriptX functionality is licensed free of charge, with the exception of the control's advanced printing features which are only accessible in the presence of a paid-for license. Development: Web Programming Languages
      One of the things the web has brought us, apart from the ability to communicate around the globe in rich media, is a plethora of new languages and new functionality for old languages. We do not expect this to slow any time soon, but rather to accelerate. It is almost impossible to keep up with everything that is going on in this arena. Some more recent additions to this field are PHP, Zope and SOAP. Then there is the burgeoning field of content management systems which are not really languages per se. Introduction
      The intent of this document is to provide some insight into the languages used in the development and provision of services on the Internet. We want to provide some context in which any particular language might be selected. Secondly, we want to provide some insight into where we think web languages are going. What we do not intend to provide here is an in depth, or even superficial, tutorial on how to program in any one of these particular languages. If you feel you need to learn one of the languages mentioned here you should either take a course or buy a book that will provide you with the training you need.

Search ... Using Reflection to Create a Data Access Class In most applications database access is restricted to a single database type. If you are connecting to SQL Server Microsoft has the Data Access Application Block to eliminate most of the mundane code of database access. But what happens if you need to connect to multiple types of data store? Do you write a data access class for each? When faced with this dilemma working on a project I decided to use a single class and create the data access objects through reflection. Here is a techique for assigning images to an image control directly from your DataTable.

    Introduction
    This paper surveys current and planned languages and interfaces for developing World Wide Web based applications prefaced by a discussion of the characteristics of such languages. The principal goal of creating this document was to identify the various languages currently in use and to provide some insight into the context in which each language is used. Secondarily, the authors sought some insight into the directions that Web programming was going, especially in the context of the intense publicity surrounding Sun's Java. This paper does not attempt to provide in-depth tutorials on these languages and systems. References are provided to more information about each. Significant student or "Hacker" level experience is required in UNIX and least some experience with one of the following operating systems, VMS, MAC, NetWare, DOS, or Windows 3.1+ Required Classes: C++ (prefer 2 semesters), OO programming class or a computer lab with a project that demonstrates the students understanding of the language. Any person that applies must be productive as a C++ software programmer working in the UNIX world when they walk through the door on day #1 (at a student level). We use a team approach where two or three co-ops are assigned to an experienced engineer. The team builds program blocks for use in an object oriented data management product that Alphatronix markets into the UNIX world. Additionally, slots are available for assignment into our testing division where they are tasked to reproduce crashes or other software failures prior to version release. These slots require an above average understanding of the UNIX os, the various shells, "daemons", the kernel, networks and NFS. When there is a crash the engineers will need to reproduce all the situations that led up to, or allowed the crash or panic. Scripts in either vi, emacs, perl, C or C++ will need to be written to automatically reproduce the environment that failed so the fix can be evaluated.

    http://www.gamecabinet.com/biography/KenTidwell.html
    Ken Tidwell ( editor@gamecabinet.com
    I was born a Texan and, after twenty-two years of boots, beans, and beef, I moved to California. My first job in California was developing the interface for KEE, an object-oriented development environment, for IntelliCorp, one of the first artificial intelligence companies founded during the AI boom of the early 80s. When I arrived at IntelliCorp in the summer of 1984 I had never seen a window or a mouse (remember the Mac had only been released six months before). The job of user interface development was assigned to me more by random chance than any special design but it suited me and I learned quickly. I spent the next seven years building graphical user interfaces for IntelliCorp and hanging out with the Slugs, a loose group of low energy folk with good senses of humor. After a brief stop at Silicon Graphics, I moved to Kaleida Labs where I worked on the development of ScriptX, an object-oriented, multimedia programming language. My principle area of responsibility was the design and development of classes for the representation of time, media synchronization, and movie playback. By that time my interest in games had been rekindled so I spent most of my spare time while at Kaleida collecting and playing games. The rest of it was spent hanging out with various Evils, Fuzzies, Vegans, and the occasional Slug. Unfortunately, Kaleida Labs was rolled back into Apple, one of its parent companies, when Apple and IBM decided to cut back on costs at their two spinoffs, Kaleida and Taligent. Most of the team decided not to move into Apple, though a few stalwarts joined up and fought the good fight right up until Apple's last jolt. Now I believe they've all moved on to other enterprises.

    The Last Days of Kaleida Labs
    The long and the short of it is that Kaleida Labs, the place where I hang my hat when I'm working, has been closed by its owners, Apple and IBM. There was little (for the executive staff) or no (for the rest of us) warning that this would take place so it has come as a bit of a shock. To be sure, there were other times over the course of our three year project that I thought we would be shut down and I wouldn't have been very surprised. Several pieces of core technology for ScriptX, the multimedia programming language we've been building, were in sad shape a year ago when we made our first release. We made it pretty clear it would take a year to get these in order and the owners signed on to the project at that time. Now here we sit with a much improved, ready for prime time ScriptX. We have some adoring customers chomping at the bit to ship products using ScriptX. After three years of hard work its all coming together. And they shut us down. I could speculate on reasons why but I may well be sued if I do (as they mostly involve the rather precarious financial and technological positions our parent companies find themselves in - particularly the fruity one). I can give you one interesting quote from our CEO as printed in the Wall Street Journal. He was asked for his opinion on joint ventures between large corporations (such as Kaleida and our sibling, Taligent). "Companies should have a counseling session with me if they're thinking of doing one. I couldn't charge enough hours to say you're stupid if you try one."
