    • English Professional Writing
A minor requires a minimum of 18 credit hours of formal coursework from the University curriculum completed at Webster University. Courses used to fulfill a major may not also be used to fulfill a requirement for a minor. Only ENGL classes may count toward the minor in English.
    Certificate Offered
    • Professional Writing
    Special Study Opportunities
The curriculum of the English Department is designed to demonstrate the interaction of literature with every area of human values and human concern. The central works of English and American literature, from their great pasts to their flourishing present, are emphasized, but they are joined by other great literatures studied in translation. In upper-division courses, instead of treating together works widely varied in style, content, and theme because they were written in the same century, the department has cut across historical lines to place side by side works dealing with the same subjects or themes or works that belong to the same genre. The student with a major in English selects an emphasis in creative writing; drama; or literature, society, and politics. All courses listed in the catalog are offered on a regular basis, though some upper-division courses are taught only in two-year rotation.

Robert Canning was a Board of Trustees member of L.A.’s prestigious Colony Studio Theatre (now the Colony Theatre Company for a dozen years prior to his move to Northern California in July of 1998, and a practitioner of the "3 Ps" Publicity, Props, and Plays. He continues to be the theatre's Publicity Director, has worked as Property Master on a number of its shows, and is one of its multiply produced Playwrights. Weekend Serenade , his first full-length play, had its World Premiere at The Colony on Valentine's Day, 1987. And two of his critically acclaimed one-acts ( Icebergs and No Soap ) were featured in Late Night at The Colony under the umbrella title, One Hour of Surf and Soap during the run of Thornton Wilder's The (very proppy) Matchmaker The playwriting bug bit after a successful reading of his short play Icebergs at Oliver Hailey's Writer's Lab at The Back Alley Theatre. He has since studied Comedy Writing with Danny Simon, and Playwriting with Doric Wilson. His play MurderProof was First Place Winner of the University of Southwest Louisiana Writer's Conference. Skating on Thin Ice placed second in the 1989 Little Theatre of Alexandria (VA) National One-Act Playwriting Competition and went on to win the '91 DramaRama Festival at the Playwrights Center of San Francisco, the only one-act play to win over full-length plays since DramaRama's Playwriting Competition was established several years ago.

When I was doing a stage play, Rita Wilson heard about it because it was becoming a bit of a successful run in Los Angeles, and that's rare. Plays don't really work there. She came to it and she said right away, "This should be a movie." I'd already tried to write the screenplay so I handed it to her like, "Here.. Just read it and maybe you'll like it." That was the screenplay they bought. My actual first draft is what they bought. Isn't that nuts? "American Beauty" The script for "American Beauty" has roots in his upbringing in a repressed suburbia, Alan Ball says. "My parents were both fairly unhappy people, for a variety of reasons," he says. "I'm a huge freak, and always have been. I spent the first part of my life trying really desperately not to be one, and it was just a waste of time." One theme of the script is that it's important to live an original life, no matter what your surroundings might be. "I like how it sort of takes place in this generic America," he says. "You never know what the state is where it's set, because the America we live in now is virtually indistinguishable, any region from the other. ...

PLAYWRITING
At the University of Winnipeg
Students specializing in Playwriting enjoy small classes and individual instruction in a number of areas including one-act plays, full-length plays, and scriptwriting. Students learn how to construct a play from the initial idea to the final draft, and work collaboratively with their classmates to develop an exciting story complete with all the required elements. Workshopping opportunities are available for senior students. As a result of our close relationship with the university's English Department, students can augment their drama courses with creative writing courses taught by top-notch English professors. In addition to Playwriting I, Playwriting II: General, and Playwriting II: Honours, we teach a course in Screenwriting and another called Script and Screen, which examines existing screenplays to determine what works and what doesn't. As well, our senior students have an opportunity to work on specialized projects on a one-to-one basis with a Professor who is an experienced playwright. Questions?
