Scottish Country Dancing
I spent some time (2 years to be precise) being adamant that I would not
join my wife prancing about in funny tartan clothes. Unfortunately, I agreed to join in a dance one summer; of course I wanted to do it properly. That was three years ago, and I seem to have got hooked... Actually it's quite good fun. You have to be very alert mentally, and the biggest problem seems to be sports injuries. It helps to build up the muscles and take it carefully until your legs are strong enough. The "Spiffin" Scottish Country Dancers meet each Tuesday at St. James Parish Church Hall in Shirley from 7.30pm until 10pm. You would be most welcome to come and join us. The "New Forest Scottish Country Dancers" meet each Wednesday at the Methodist church hall in Brockenhurst from 7.30pm until 10pm. You would be most welcome to come and join us... There are also dances every 5 or 6 weeks at Minstead in the New Forest. These are excellent; there's a large crowd of friendly folk who come along. Dancing is usually to CDs rather than live music, but it's good; also - you get walk-throughs before each dance starts! The list of dances for each event, together with any cribs I may have done, may be found

In the upcoming year we will return to the successful program of 2003 – we will stay in Prague and its environs for the whole week. We will spend the whole time dancing and getting to know one of the most beautiful European cities. This time we have prepared a one day trip during which you´ll admire the most beautiful cultural and historical sights and spend the evening on a typical village farm, where you´ll taste traditional Czech meals and meet local people. You will meet Czech dancers at the dance classes and possibly find new friends. We will also spend one evening with Czech folklore, which you will find very captivating, I’m sure. All in all, I am sure that we will spend a fantastic time together! I look forward to meeting you in Prague!

Coventry Thistle Club was formed in the early 1950's. It was a weekly social dance evening with a mixture of dancing, including old time, Modern Ballroom and Scottish Country dancing.
The name derives from the Thistle Restaurant which was in "Lockhurst lane" Coventry, where the club was held on a Tuesday night. The club has had three other venues, The Bull's Head, Binley road Coventry, the W.A.V.A Hall Baras Heath Coventry and now at our current venue "Stoke United Reform Church" Brays Lane Coventry.
The dancing is now mostly Scottish Country with the occasional couple dance thrown in for good measure.
The club now organises a number of functions in the year including dances, tea parties and a Burns Supper Dance. Full details are available on this website so please do have a browse. Corryvrechan dances at major international festivals any occasion which calls for some traditional Scottish entertainment. You don't have to wait for St Andrew's Night or a Burns Supper! An evening's entertainment can be arranged to include something for everyone, where general dancing for all (with lots of light-hearted instruction) is interspersed with short demonstration spots. We are fortunate to dance exclusively to live music with a number of great musicians. We hope our enthusiasm for the traditions of Scotland's dances will be communicated to our audiences, wherever they may be. We also thank all of you who watch our performances and join in the general sessions and hope that you enjoy them as much as we do! In September we have been selected to perform in Moscow at the CIOFF festival commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the end of WWII - a thrilling opportunity. What is Scottish Country Dancing?
    Contributed by Anselm Lingnau
Scottish Country Dancing is a modern form of the 'country dancing' popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. It involves groups of six to ten people (most of the time) of mixed sex (most of the time) a 'set' dancing to the driving strains of reels, jigs and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. (no bagpipes, mostly!). The dance often combines solo figures for the 'first couple' in the set with movements for all the dancers, although there is considerable variation there are over 7000 different dances catalogued, of which maybe 1000 or so are of lasting and non-local importance. Many of these dances derive from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections, but a lot have been devised in the fairly recent past, say the last fifty years or so. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish Country Dancing.
Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on 'steps' than in, say, Ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary).
