THE HONG KONG HIGHLANDERS REEL CLUB The Reel Club has been in existence for over fifty years, since 1947 in fact, although it only affiliated with the Hong Kong Highlanders in 1997. It was originally set up by the then minister of the Union Church with the intention of providing British servicemen with wholesome entertainment and keeping them away from less salubrious areas of Hong Kong. Fifty years later, it is still providing people with wholesome entertainment and the chance to meet friends and dance on a regular basis. Individual members may come and go, but the regular Monday night meetings keep right on going, though we're now in a new venue, the Hong Kong Cricket Club. The Reel Club is affiliated to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society , a globe-spanning organisation with branches and affiliated groups in more countries than you can imagine. You will never go on holiday again without packing your dancing shoes.

Sept 18: Kelso-Longview classes start (see Calendar of Events The Vancouver USA Scottish Country Dancers is a social dance group, practicing and performing the traditional country dances of Scotland. Our classes are offered through the Vancouver Parks and Recreation department. It is not necessary to be Scottish, or even to bring a partner. Our dancing is open to all, and new dancers are always welcome. New classes start every new term as advertised in the Parks and Recreation catalog. Scottish Country Dancing is not the competitive "up on the toes" Highland Dancing often seen in the movies and at the Highland Games. Scottish Country Dancing is one of the grandparents of Square Dancing, Contra Dancing, and Clogging, and is not as physically strenuous as Highland Dancing. Scottish Country Dancing primarily consists of Reels, Jigs, and Strathspeys, with some Quadrilles, Waltzes, Circle Dances, and Highland Steps. All steps and dances are taught from the beginning of the term so don't be afraid to come join us. We are often involved in public demonstrations and are invited to other community activities. Our primary interest in dancing is to have fun!

107. Scottish Country Dance
At the end of the 17th century, dancing came into the open in Edinburgh as an upperclass recreation. By the 1770s it had become a major national pastime.

Scottish Country Dance
In the dance, an art so intimately bound up with music, the French convention found ample expression. We have already seen in the old Cockelbie's Sow (15th cent.) how, among the old Scottish dance tunes, there peeps out such strangers as the Orliance Naverne (Navernais), and in a work entitled The Boke Named the Governour (1546), the writer, enumerating the older English dances says, "In stede of these we have nowe Base daunces bargenettes pavyons turgions ," whose very labels bespeak their origin, just as do the Scottish paspay (passepied), sincopas (cinq pas), brawl (branle), and galyert (gaillarde). One recalls how the country folk in Christis Kirk on the Grene , throw aside the old tunes and cry to the minstrel to "blaw up a brawl of France." The craze for these tersichorean fancies lasted well beyond the end of this period, and so it is quite clear that in both the lighter forms of music and in the dance, Scotland owed a great deal to France. In the very nature of things, the debt could not be repaid in like for like, although Scotland did furnish Charles VII (1422-61) of France with a court minstrel in John Fary, and Henry IV (1589-1610) with two favourite lutars in James and Charles Hedington, whilst we learn from Tabouret's (1589) that the branles d'Escosse were "the rage" of the day, and they already had a place in the

Bialy has written 1 entry about this goal
Dancing at St. Andrew's When my husband and I got married (both for the second time), our 250 wedding guests gifted us with the funds to attend a week long visit to St. Andrews Scotland. We met during a Scottish Country Dance class, have both been to Scotland before (5 times for both of us), and yet, have never been to the most revered place to dance the Country Dances of Scotland.
But, dance and work related injuries, and some personal family tragedies have prevented us from reaching our dream!
