Scottish Country Dance
Scottish country dance is the ballroom dance of eighteenth and nineteenth century Scotland. Along with English contra dancing, Scottish country dance is a predecessor of the dance form we now know as square dancing. It survives today both as informal ceilidh (party) dancing and as a dance form codified by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Several years ago I started taking Scottish country dance classes for recreation and exercise. I find it immensely enjoyable. I have also, at times, found the urge to write new dances irresistible. And I met my wife, Jodi, at SCD class. These pages include new dances that I and Jodi have written, as well as information on the Royal Scottish Country Dance society and links to other SCD-related sites on the Web. NOTE: Not all my dances are listed or posted here as yet. I wanted to get these pages back up here, since their old location (on Primenet) has disappeared as a result of Mindspring/Earthlink swallowing Primenet. I plan to post additional dances as time allows.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Scottish country dancing at the 2005 Skagit Valley Highland Games in Mount Vernon, Washington Scottish country dancing or "SCD" is a form of social dance involving groups of mixed couples of dancers tracing progressive patterns according to a predetermined choreography. SCD is often considered a type of folk dancing although this is not strictly true - it derives from the courtly dances of the Renaissance and, as a form of ballroom dancing , predates the more modern styles of the quadrille as well as couple dances like the waltz . Related dance forms include English country dancing contra dancing ceilidh dancing Old Tyme dancing ... Irish set dancing , or square dance

    General
Scottish country dances are categorised as reels (including hornpipes jigs , and strathspeys according to the type of music to which they are danced. The first two types (also called quick-time dances ) feature fast tempos, quick movements, and a lively feel. The third type (strathspey) has a much slower tempo and a more formal, stately feel. The strathspey is unique to Scottish country dancing. There are also 9/8 jigs, minuets and waltz-time dances although they make up a very small part of the repertoire. edit
    Dancers and Sets
Scottish country dancing is generally done in organized formations referred to as "sets". Sets usually consist of three or four couples, but some dances call for larger sets of five, six or even more couples. Couples are normally mixed, but women will dance with women or men with men depending on the make-up of the assembly.

Scottish Country Dance Class, Greyfriars, Colchester
The Scottish country dancing class in Colchester, North Essex, is run under the auspices of the Adult Education Centre, and takes place in one of their halls. It is a class specifically formed for the over 50s. Catherine who is herself probably in her early 60s takes it. There are about 25 women and two men present when we first visited this class. There were about 40 participants at one time but some have since died.
