I started Scottish Country Dancing in the fall of 1994 and immediately fell in love with it. Then I began having dances pop into my head and eventually I wrote them down. These are the dances I have written. Each dance has been danced at least once by my local group, the Silk and Thistle class of the RSCDS - Chicago Branch. Were it not for the Silk and Thistle dancers, these dances would not exist. They patiently try my dances, critique them, help tweak them when necessary, and help select music and an appropriate name. Especial favorites of the group are indicated with an "*". I plan to add dances to this list as I write them. Feel free to copy them and dance them anywhere anytime. I only request that you keep my name associated with them. I have split my dance page into several pages to make the pages shorter. Click on the year to go to the appropriate page, e.g. 2000. Dances not yet tried are listed in a red font. Feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions, or comments, or visit my home page . Thank you, and I hope you enjoy dancing these dances.

Scottish Country Dancing FAQs:
What is it?
It is the Ballroom dancing of Scotland. If you can imagine something similar to square dancing, in the formal style of a French Minuet, to Scottish Jig, Reel and Strathspey music - you've almost got it!
Do I need to be Scottish?
Not at all. Although the dance style originated in the courtly dances of Scotland in the 1700's, it is now danced (and enjoyed!) all over the world.
Do I need a partner?
No! As this is Social dancing, it is customary to change partners for every dance.
What about the swords?
That is Highland dancing. Country dancing is danced in sets, usually of four couples. Each dance contains several formations, and often tells a story.
Ok, I'm interested. How much?

Technical Report 336
December 1988
Basser Department of Computer Science

University of Sydney
Australia (updated 14 October 2003) INTRODUCTION A variety of dance styles have evolved in Scotland, including Reels, Square Sets, Circle Dances and Country Dances (Flett, 1964, 1). The Reels have evolved into solo dances associated with the highlands of Scotland. The Square Sets have evolved into the Quadrilles, Lancers , etc, performed socially. The Circle Dances have come to include dances such as the Waltz and Polka : done by couples independently circling the room. Country Dances are performed in Sets by couples in two parallel lines, one of ladies and one of men. As the dance progresses, each couple progresses through the various positions in the set. Country Dances were introduced from England around 1700. Through the 18th and 19th Centuries, Scottish steps came to be included. In England, the popularity of Country Dancing declined over this period, virtually ceasing by the mid 19th Century. However, in Scotland it gained popularity. Country Dancing was done equally by the laird and the crofter (Milligan, 1976, 3). By 1900, most young people attended dance classes at some stage. In 1776, Edward Topham wrote, " I do not know any place in the world where dancing is made so necessary a part of polite education as in Edinburgh" (Flett, 1964, 27).
