It is a form of pattern dancing that evolved into square dancing in North America. Today, hundreds of groups around the world enjoy the sociability of this unique dance form. Many of these groups are part of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS). Each of these groups offer classes with a friendly, helpful program in which to learn.

Scottish Country Dancing
The dance form is called "Scottish," and on special occasions many dancers wear their clan's tartan in kilts or sashes, but there is no requirement to be a "MacAnything". Scottish heritage is not needed to join this group of enthusiastic and friendly people.
Dances are done to the traditional music of jigs, reels and strathspeys. The dancing pace, especially for jigs and reels, provides a good aerobic workout. The complex dancing patterns result in an equally good mental workout. And Scottish Country Dancing is also an ideal form of stress management: you can't think about anything else while dancing! The formations are done in sets of six or eight people, so the activity is also a social and cooperative one. And you don't need a partner to join.
Branch Description
The KW Branch has been active since 1960. Currently it has 60 members, ranging from young adults to seniors.

John Chambers' Scottish Country Dance Music Collection
This directory and its subdirectories contain the abc source for a collection of Scottish Country Dance music . Files are named for the dance. So if you want a medley for General Stuart's Reel, fetch GeneralStuartsR.abc, feed it to your abc software, and you should get the tunes on your screen. Individual tunes are all in subdirectories named for a rhythm: reel, jig, strathspey, march, etc. This directory's Makefile made the medley pages from them and from the hdr/ *.hdr files that produce the dance title and other information at the top of the page. If you don't have ABC software, you might like to try a tool that I'm working on that returns the tunes in various formats: CLICK HERE . This will return the page you're looking at now, but the ABC files will be expanded to show all the tunes, and each tune will have a line of links to return it in a number of different formats. You can find out all about the abc music software at the abc home page . Also, check out the

Asilomar Ball in Merrill Hall
Scottish country dancing is the Traditional Ballroom Dance of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, was founded to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. And, it's not just for Scots ... today people enjoy Scottish Country Dancing all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solos to bagpipe music, we dance in sets of two to five couples. Everyone changes partners for each dance, so there's no need to bring a partner! The San Francisco Bay area is home to many fine musicians . The dances vary in tempo: lively and fast paced or slow and elegant:
  • Jigs (quick time)
  • Reels (quick time)
  • Strathspeys (slow and lovely)
Fiddles and piano, along with recorders, bass, drums, and accordians are typical. Like other Celtic music, Scottish music is highly emotional - both the lively quicktime tunes and the hidden power of a strathspey will make your heartstrings thrum!

Welcome to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, San Francisco Branch.
Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), based in Edinburgh, was founded in 1923 to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. Since then Scottish Country Dancing has spread all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solo performances accompanied by bagpipes, Country dances are danced with partners in sets of two or more couples doing an exciting variety of formations. The music, performed live at parties and some classes, is provided by a fiddle and piano, or by a whole band. Dance tempos vary from lively jigs, hornpipes and reels, to the elegant, slower strathspeys. Interested in trying Scottish Country Dancing? Come by yourself or with a friend. No partners are needed to attend classes or parties, and you need not be Scottish to enjoy the fun. Sessions for new beginners start every September in most locations and at other times in some cities. The cost is generally $5 or less per class. Please check out class schedules , browse our bookstore , or look over our events . Join us!

Happy Feet Assured The Scottish Country Dance Index lists, in alphabetical order, all the dances for which the music is available on CD, and the album on which it is to be found. Further information on the list gives the type of dance (Reel, Jig, Strathspey, Medley, Waltz), the number of repeats as played on this particular album, and the number of bars. Dancers can now not only trace their favourite dance to a particular album, but also, where more than one artiste has recorded it, select their CD according to either the style or the speed of the music they desire. The "pace" is calculated from the track time given on the CD sleeve, so includes chords. It is therefore only an approximate guide to the speed, but should be more than adequate for selecting the appropriate track to dance to. All CDs are available from the Music In Scotland Music Store. Simply click on the Product IDs or artist of the CDs you would like to order. We also have a selection of Instructional Videos.
