    Scotland's First War of Independence
    Sarah Crome Published by
    Publisher: Auch Books
    http://www.scotlands-war.com/
Sarah Crome The subject of Scotland's Wars of Independence with England during the 13th and 14th centuries has been extensively written about, but no inclusive book on the subject has been available until now. Scotland's First War of Independence fills the need for an accurate, illustrated account of those turbulent times. From the tragic death of Alexander III in 1286, through the English invasion of 1296 and the resistance of William Wallace, to the heroic success of King Robert I, and the Treaty of Edinburgh in 1328, Scotland's First War of Independence chronicles the struggle of the Scots to assert their nationhood. Scotland's First War of Independence gives a lavishly illustrated account of the period, making it accessible to a wide audience. The book illustrates all the key locations that featured during the War, and covers a vast geographical area. From Orkney in the north of Scotland, to Whithorn in the south, from the Vale of York in northern England to southern Ireland, the reader is led through the events, people and places that changed Scotland's destiny and shaped its relationship with its neighbours. Scotland's First War of Independence is a superbly illustrated guide to one of the most tumultuous periods in British history. It is also the first comprehensive book on this subject to be produced. From 1286 to 1330, it chronicles the period in detail, illustrates the key events with reconstruction illustrations, and guides the reader through the story with maps. Artefacts and documents relating to the time are shown and stunning new landscape and building photography is shown in full colour. It provides a unique look at the locations, and takes the opportunity to show some less well-known sites not depicted elsewhere.

The Darien Scheme - The Fall of Scotland
Some have said: 'The Darien venture was the most ambitious colonial scheme attempted in the 17th century…The Scots were the first to realise the strategic importance of the area..." Whilst others claimed: "They were plain daft to try…. It was disaster. They never had a chance." T'is for you to decide! William Paterson, a Scot who's other major claim to fame was the foundation of the Bank of England, was born in Tinwald in Dumfriesshire in 1658. He made his first fortune through international trade, travelling extensively throughout the America's and West Indies. John Senex. A new map of ye Isthmus of Darien in America, the Bay of Panama...
Scale: 45 miles to 1 inch. 47 x 28 cm Upon his return to his native Scotland, Paterson sought to make his second fortune with a scheme of epic proportion. His plan was to create a link between east and west, which could command the trade of the two great oceans of the world, the Pacific and Atlantic. In 1693, Paterson helped to set up the Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies in Edinburgh to establish an entrepot on the Isthmus of Darien (the narrow neck of land separating North and South America now known as Panama). It was claimed that the company would prosper through foreign trade and promoted Darien as a remote spot where Scots could settle.

COLUMBA AND THE ISLE OF IONA, SCOTLAND Lying off the west coast of the Isle of Mull the tiny Isle of Iona, barely three miles long by one mile wide, has had an influence out of all proportion to its size to the establishment of Christianity in Scotland, England and throughout mainland Europe. Iona's place in history was secured when in 563 AD St. Columba arrived on its white sandy beaches with 12 followers, built his first Celtic church and established a monastic community. Once settled, the Irish monk set about converting most of pagan Scotland and northern England to the Christian faith. Iona's fame as a missionary centre and outstanding place of learning eventually spread throughout Europe turning it into a place pilgrimage for several centuries to come. Iona became a sacred isle where kings of Scotland (48), Ireland (4) and Norway (8) were buried. So who was St. Columba or Colum Cille

The first room in the museum has exhibits which tell the story of the 91st (originally the 98th). In 1793 George III wrote to John, 5th Duke of Argyll, asking him to raise a kilted regiment of 1,100 men. The Duke was unwell at the time and deputed the task to his kinsman, Duncan Campbell, 8th Lochnell. On 9 July 1794 they were formally gazetted into the British Army as the 98th Argyllshire Highlanders, renumbered later, in October 1798, as the 91st. On 5 May 1795 the regiment embarked for South Africa to capture the Cape of Good Hope from the Dutch. At this time 15 of the 33 officers were Campbells and 2 of the others had married Campbells. But the required number of NCOs and rank and file could not be found in Argyllshire, the rest came largely from Glasgow and Edinburgh, Renfrew and Paisley, with a small contingent of Irish. (See:

    Hadrians wall
One of the greatest monuments to the power
    - and limitations - of the Roman Empire,
Hadrian's Wall ran for 73 miles across open country.
    Why was it built?
At the time of Julius Ceasar's first small invasion of the south coast of Britain in 55 BC, the British Isles, like much of mainland Europe was inhabited by many Celtic tribes loosely united by a similar language and culture but nevertheless each distinct. He returned the next year and encountered the 4000 war chariots of the Catevellauni in a land "protected by forests and marshes, and filled with a great number of men and cattle." He defeated the Catevellauni and then withdrew, though not before establishing treaties and alliances. Thus began the Roman occupation of Britain. By the time Hadrian became Emperor in 117 AD the Roman Empire had ceased to expand. Hadrian was concerned to consolidate his boundaries. He visited Britain in 122 AD, and ordered a wall to be built between the Solway Firth in the West and the River Tyne in the east "to separate Romans from Barbarians". Page 2:
