The West Highland estate of Lunga lies just 100 miles from Glasgow and 150 miles from Edinburgh. Its untarred roads and tracks pass through many types of riding country. The stables overlook Scotland's newest sizeable yacht harbour, Craobh Haven 22 miles South of Oban on the Sound of Jura with views across the Firth of Lorne to the islands of the Inner Hebrides (map at the bottom of this page). The Estate is however not on any public transport route and so it is essential to arrive and leave in a car.
Natural Horsemanship
Lucia and Nigel Boase founded the centre in 1972 with Appaloosa horses they brought back from Argentina. Lu is a Western Equestrian Society Approved Instructor, a British Horse Society Assistant Instructor and has a lifetime experience of many branches of horsemanship. and particularly "natural horsemanship" inspired by American "horsewhisperers" Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt and Pat Parelli to mention a few.
Appaloosas
The Appaloosas and part-bred American Quarterhorses are bred and trained on the estate. These breeds are remarkable for their intelligence, versatility and quiet temperament. They make reliable 'school-masters' and love to please. Many small children ride them with confidence. At least one qualified leader accompanies the riders.

John Douglas Sutherland Campbell
(9th Duke of Argyll) Politician and statesman. Born in London, Campbell was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Eton and the Universities of St. Andrews and Cambridge. He became Member of Parliament for Argyllshire (1868-71 and 1895-1900). Campbell married Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848 - 1939), a daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1871. He became Canada's youngest Governor-General in 1878, serving in this position until 1883. The couple made lasting contributions to Canadian society, especially encouraging the arts and sciences, promoting the creation of various institutions such as the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of Canada and the National Gallery of Canada. Campbell served as Governor of Windsor Castle (1892 - 1914) and succeeded his father to the Dukedom of Argyll in 1900. The couple lived mainly at Kensington Palace (London), although their marriage was unhappy and gave rise to no children. He died on the Isle of Wight and was succeeded by his nephew.

William Topaz McGonagall
William Topaz McGonagall was an eccentric figure who was born in Edinburgh. He later moved to Dundee where he remained for much of his life. He was revered as "The World's Worst Poet" composing such rhymes as "The Tay Bridge Disaster". However he was very well read and was conversant with the works of Shakespeare, Scott, Burns and other well known writers. At long last, in the year 2002 - 100 years after his death, the City of Dundee are honouring McGonagall, by prominently displaying in stone, his famous poem about the River Tay. McGonagall's poetry bequeathed to the Scots the gift of humorous expression, the ability to see the funny side of things and a reminder to not take life too seriously. This is well demonstrated by many of his poems beginning with the word 'Beautiful' e.g. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Loch Katrine. His poems about the River Tay frequently use that word.
