Dumfriesshire colonist Battle of Ticonderoga War of Independence ... World War II
Battle of Ticonderoga
The 42nd Highlanders Regiment at Ticonderoga in 1758. This letter was written from Lake George on 11 July 1758 by Capt. Allan Campbell, who was then serving in the 42nd Highlanders regiment. He is writing to his brother, John Campbell of Barcaldine, to inform him of the defeat of the British forces at Ticonderoga on 8 July by the French. Much of the letter is a rather sad listing of the names of officers, all of them Scottish, who were killed or injured in the battle. However, Captain Campbell is pleased to inform his brother that both he and his nephew George are unhurt.
Ticonderoga, almost on the Vermont border at the end of Lake Champlain, was an important post for control of the Upper New York valleys and was a principal point fought over by the British and French during the Seven Years' War. As Campbell mentions, the British forces failed to remove the French garrison at this encounter and fell back south to Lake George from where Campbell sent this letter. Fort Ticonderoga was to play a pivotal part in the early stages of the American Revolution 20 years later.
Transcription Captain Campbell abbreviated many words in his letter: for ease of reading, the missing portions of the words have been added in square brackets.

Communities - key to delivering cultural rights
The UNISON Scotland Response to the consultation of the Cultural Commission
March 2005
Executive Summary
  • UNISON welcomes the concept of cultural rights and the idea that everyone has an entitlement to have these delivered. It is important that any strategic overview makes accessibility a major priority, and that local funders address the issue of accessibility in any projects they fund. If we are serious about peoples 'rights' to culture the Scottish Executive will need to both broaden and strengthen the obligations on local authorities to provide cultural services - and provide the appropriate resources for them to carry this out. Local authorities are therefore central to the success of cultural rights and developing talent. This position should be recognised in the cultural commission's report, and support should be given for their lead role in the community. Current in-house local authority cultural provision should be maintained, and a survey to investigate any further role should be undertaken, working to increase joined-up provision, not the further fragment it.

Significant features of the Scottish culture
Scotland has been the cradle of prominent figures such as Alexander Graham Bell – inventor of the telephone – and Alexander Fleming, who discovered the penicillin. Besides, it is impossible to talk about Scottish personalities without mentioning the world-wide famous King of Scotland Macbeth, who became Shakespeare’s source of inspiration for his tragedy of the same name.
Scottish food
Who has never heard of the wild river-caught Scottish Salmon? Hopefully, nobody!
Moreover, Scotland is known for some of its culinary specialities. Let’s talk about the haggis first. According to what Scots they say, it is a small native animal which has adapted to Scotland’s hills by growing legs shorter on one side! The truth is that the haggis is just made of a sheep’s stomach used as a casing, filled with oats, onions, spices and other organs (usually called “pluck”).
Basically, the haggis is eaten on burns nights to celebrate the birthday of the 18th century poet, Robert Burns.

Virtual Scotland Welcome to Virtual Scotland . Virtual Scotland is an expansion of " The Virtual Hebrides ". As such it will follow the same principles and layout. Please do not confuse this site with some of the Tourist Information sites on Scotland. Any income generated from this site is immediately spent on the site itself. The aim is to create a useful resource and central point of access for all things Scottish. Scotland is famous for many things but their are many things that are often attributed to "Great Britain" that are actually Scottish in origin. Of course the Bagpipes are rarely mistaken for being anything but Scottish. Together with the Kilt, highland dancing and the famous tartans Scotland has a very Celtic background and comparisons can be drawn with Ireland. Sadly, Scotland has yet to gain its' full independance from the rest of the U.K. even though the Scottish National Party has the support of luminaries such as Sean Connery.

http://www.re.org/adventures/scotland/theroad.html
Navigating the Road Growing up in America (the land of the car), you learn all about how roads are supposed to work, what the rules are, how to drive, and so on. When you set foot in Scotland, you can forget all that. The obvious difference is that you're driving on the "wrong" side of the street. Actually, this was only rarely a problem. So long as there are other cars to remind you which side they're on, it's easy to keep yourself straight. Even shifting with my left hand instead of my right just seemed right, given the conditions. The real differences start when you open your eyes, and have to figure out what all the road markings mean, what the local conventions are, and so on. You see a solid single line, what does it mean? How about a double line? How about a zig-zag line? Who has the right of way? And what's the deal with these roundabouts anyway? Of course, I knew all of these by the time we left, but I didn't actually take notes for what they mean, so the next time I see them, I'll be just as confused. The worst problem for me was one of terminology. My brain seemed to flip my American driving habits for driving on the "wrong" side, and even flipped some of the words! In America, a left turn is the one that's the long way around, and a right turn goes right next to the corner, and not across other traffic. My brain kept using these same words (left and right) to mean the same convention, rather than the direction. I kept calling right turns "left" because the right hand turn starts from the middle, and goes across some lanes before it gets to the turned direction.

Americans Abroad A short guide to learn how to be an American Abroad. Forget that you're in somebody else's home land. Demand things that you have come to expect as an American. Demand ice in your drinks. Demand fast service. Demand that people use your twisted variant on English, not theirs. Forget their local customs, yours are simply correct. And be obnoxious about it. Don't forget to keep telling all the locals how different they are. Remeber, the key to cross-cultural understanding is to TALK LOUD. Remember, all these people are here for your service. Don't let them forget it. If you aren't satisfied, be demanding and unforgiving. Don't forget the camera and camcorder. You'll want to live this experience over again and again. The culture of Scotland is the national culture of Scotland (which has a civic culture somewhat distinct from that of the rest of the British Isles ). It originates from various differences, some entrenched as part of the Act of Union , others facets of nationhood not readily defined but readily identifiable.
Scots law
Scotland retains Scots Law , its own unique legal system, based on Roman law , which combines features of both civil law and common law . The terms of union with England specified the retention of separate systems. The barristers being called advocates, and the judges of the high court for civil cases are also the judges for the high court for criminal cases. Scots Law differs from England's common law system.
