Elizabeth Sutherland, Tony Gray (Photographer) Paperback - 160 pages (April 1997)
Publisher: Birlinn ISBN: 1874744661 This guide to the Picts covers all known Pictish stones. It incorporates the latest discoveries, along with a full listing of symbols and their possible meaning, a complete gazetteer, and location maps with ordnance survey grid references. The Picts were a Dark Age warrior race which ruled Scotland for 500 years. They left a legacy of carved stones, still to be found throughout the country in churchyards, museums and private collections. This book lists all known stones - some 630 examples - whether complete or fragmentary, pagan or Christian, and those lost to us now. Descriptions are given of the three classes of stone. BBC's The Mummies of Cladh Hallan According to sensational archaeological discoveries currently being made in Scotland, Bronze Age Britons were practising the art of mummification at the same time as 'mummy culture' was in full swing in Pharaonic Egypt. It appears that ancient Britons invented this skill for themselves ... There is now a page for the latest excavation at the site of the new Scottish parliament. "The Holyrood Archaeology Project has been set up to investigate the future Scottish Parliament site, Edinburgh. Once part of the medieval burgh of Canongate, this historic site lies at the east end of the Royal Mile which links Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, official Scottish residence of the Queen."

    Archaeology Sites across Scotland
Archaeology in Scotland covers sites which go back to the days before recorded history when the standing stones, stone circles and megalithic burial chambers were being constructed, through the Roman occupation to mediaeval times.
Dark Isle This is without doubt my own personal favourite. Archaeology in Scotland This is a review of archaeology in Scotland by the University of Glasgow and contains articles on the significance of Celtic Coinage and excavations and surveys at Strome Castle, Wester Ross and Caulfields Military Way. Newstead Archaeology Project This site is dedicated to a project which is investigating the region surrounding the Roman Fort of Trimontium near Newstead, on the River Tweed. The Archaeological site has produced an outstanding collection of Roman artefacts, from humble wooden tent pegs to highly decorated military parade helmets. The Scottish section of Roman Military Sites in Britain provides brief details of lots of locations, together with a useful map showing the location of each of them.
