Medieval or Later Rural Settlement (MoLRS) Website http://www.molrs.org.uk
This new website has been launched to help people learn more about how our Scottish ancestors lived in the centuries leading up to modern times.
The site, created by the Medieval or Later Rural Settlement (MoLRS) Working Group, has details of up-to-date research by archaeologists, historians, ethnologists and scientists into the traces of our agricultural landscapes of the past 1500 years. Visitors will be able to see the latest news about current work, and can also find out how to learn more through local archaeological and historical groups. Dr John Atkinson, an archaeological researcher from Glasgow University and Chair of the MoLRS Working Group, is delighted to welcome the site: "MoLRS sites are all around us, but most people have no idea about the wealth of information they can give us about how people lived during the formative years of the Scottish nation. The new website will help us cultivate an interest in these fascinating places, and will help make the link between professionals and amateur groups so that we can work together to learn more. MoLRS sites are relevant to everyone interested in Scotland's heritage; the website will be invaluable for telling their stories to a wide audience - stories of everyday people, of sustainability, and of the devastating effects of outside influence - to a wide audience."

33. Scotland's Past
This handbook on the archaeology of prehistoric Scotland incorporates a Ritchie, Graham Anna, scotland archaeology and Early History, 1991, £15.50
http://www.scotlandspast.org/mesolith2.cfm
Back Next Part II Evidence for settlement sites is remarkably sparse but this is partly due to the fact that, compared to other periods in Scottish history, there has been relatively little study undertaken. Most sites are known from the scatter of stone tool manufacture debris, better known as lithic scatter. Many sites have been discovered through ploughing but others have been found along the sides of rivers. As can be seen from the distribution map there is surprisingly little evidence of Mesolithic occupation in the inland areas but a recent survey carried out by RCAHMS (Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland) and the National Trust on Ben Lawers in Perthshire has uncovered evidence of a camp located on one of the slopes of the mountain. More detailed work was undertaken by Glasgow University and a radiocarbon date of 7000BC was obtained from charcoal found at the site. A pitchstone blade was also discovered at a shieling site in the same area. Many more sites such as this are certain to exist but, as yet, survey and excavation work has rarely been undertaken.

http://www.rathmell-arch.co.uk/cases1.php
Introduction Services Case Studies Staff ... Links 25 Sep 2005 An expansion proposal for Buckreddan Nursing Home, Kilwinning proposed developing some 3.4ha of adjacent agricultural ground. There were no known archaeological monuments in the development area. However there was a former industrial site to the east and the general area had been assessed by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service, archaeological advisors to the local planning authority, to have the potential for prehistoric and medieval activity. North Ayrshire Council attached a planning condition to the granted planning consent requiring a staged programme of archaeological work commencing with an evaluation, to determine what archaeology was present. Rathmell Archaeology was appointed to act on behalf of the applicant and agreed the terms of the evaluation with the West of Scotland Archaeology Service, through a Written Scheme of Investigation (method statement). The main objective of the evaluation was to determine the character, extent and significance of any archaeological features that lay within the development area. The evaluation failed to identify any significant archaeological features in the development area. One truncated portion of a straight rig and grooving field system was located in the southern portion of the site. The whole site was covered by an intensive system of tile drains, reflecting the impeded drainage on site and suggesting that perhaps this ground was inimical to pre-modern agriculture or settlement. All features recorded are thought to be post Improvement that is from the nineteenth and twentieth century.
