When computers are seized because they contain allegedly stolen intellectual property, and police pierce the security anonymous remailers, the days of the Net as a cozy, cocktail party are over. Welcome to a flame war with real bullets.

By Wendy M. Grossman When computers are seized because they contain allegedly stolen intellectual property, or the security of anonymous remailers is pierced by police, alt.scientology.war the days of the Internet as a cozy, private, intellectual cocktail party are over.
Welcome to mortal combat between two alien cultures - a flame war with real bullets. The raiding party says he'll have his equipment back by Monday. Weeks later, he's still waiting. Lerma is not the first. In February, similar raids were staged on Dennis Erlich in Glendale, California, and on anon.penet.fi, an anonymous remailer run by Johan Helsingius in Finland. Then more - on Tuesday, August 22, 1995. This time it's two raids. The target is FactNet, an anticult electronic library and archive based in Golden, Colorado. One raid is on FactNet chair - and former Scientologist - Lawrence Wollersheim, the unpaid winner of a multimillion-dollar suit against the church. The other is on FactNet director Bob Penny. FactNet has been expecting a raid since early spring, and it long ago told Internet users to download as much of its archives as possible. There are now FactNet anti-Scientology kits on websites all over the world. With netters everywhere able to cut and paste them, transmit and download them, they become more and more difficult to track down. It would take a lot of international cooperation and a lot of police power to get them all.

Introduction
Reading about what the followers of destructive sects believe in has made me scared of what will happen to our democratic society if their claims are not contested. I don't think that an enlightened person would ever join any one of these cults if he knew what they stand for, and thus I will provide information about what different sects believe. And if their claims are un- or pseudo-scientific, I will tell you what the scientific community has to say about them. What I'm looking for is not to give you both sides of the story, but to criticize things I dislike in the movements. If you want a more positive view of them, don't ask me to give you that. Instead you should follow the "pros" links I provide on each page.

Posted by Kieran Healy What with Tom Cruise and his Scientology-driven antipathy to psychiatric medicine in the news recently, it might be worth revisiting an old post about the claims that Scientology makes for its founder, the appalling L. Ron Hubbard. Was there ever a more entertaining belief system embedded in a more ruthless organization ? (Apart from the obvious one L. Ron Hubbard: A ... 1970 and 1973 , when L. Ron turned his gargantuan intellect and penetrating insight to sociology and philosophy, two subjects close to my heart: Management Series volumes. Naturally, this work now forms the cornerstone of graduate-level reading in the sociology of organizations. Whenever I teach Orgs, L. Ron gets the first six weeks to himself. Then maybe we move on to Weber or Herb Simon or one of those other, lesser people. Interesting and all as it is, though, the sociology of organizations is not as fundamental a subject as, say, logic. L. Ron was working on the foundations of logic at around the same time that we was doing the drug research that Tom Cruise admires so much: His breakthroughs at this time include the first significant advances on the subject of logic since ancient Greece.

SCIENTOLOGY
(THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY)
Scientology, one of the genuinely new religions to originate in the United States in the twentieth century, was founded by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). The Church of Scientology believes "that Man is basically good, that he is seeking to survive, [and] that his survival depends on himself and upon his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe" (from Church of Scientology's statement of beliefs). Hubbard's extensive writings and taped lectures constitute the beliefs and the basis for the religion's practices. The aims of Scientology are "A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights." L. Ron Hubbard grew up mostly in Montana, but also lived in Nebraska; Seattle, Washington; and Washington, DC . As a child he read extensively, and by the age of twelve was studying the theories of Freud. As a teenager Hubbard traveled throughout Asia and the East, continuing his studies of philosophy, religion, and human nature. In 1929 he returned to the United States and in 1930 enrolled in George Washington University, studying mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics. Hubbard wanted to answer the basic questions relating to the human being's nature, and decided to do further research on his own. To finance this, he began a literary career in the early 1930s, publishing numerous stories and screen plays in various genres, including adventure, mystery, and science fiction. Hubbard continued his travels and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was injured during the war, and used some of his own theories concerning the human mind to assist in his healing.

THE RELIGIOUS STATUS OF SCIENTOLOGY:
IS SCIENTOLOGY A RELIGION?
By Irving Hexham Professor of Religious Studies, University of Calary [First written 1978 - revised 1997 © Irving Hexham 1997]
Introduction
Before commenting on the religious status of Scientology I would like to provide the reader with the following information about myself to help them evaluate my comments. I am a practising Christian belonging to the evangelical wing of theof Anglican (Episcopalian or Church of England) Communion. Before becoming an academic I worked almost ten years for the North Western Gas Board in England where I gained various trade and engineering qualifications. In 1967 I entered the University of Lancaster where I obtained my B.A. (Hons.) in Religious Studies under Professor Ninian Smart. From Lancaster I went to Bristol University where I completed an M.A. "with commendation," before going on to a Ph.D. At Bristol I was supervised by the Rev. F.B. Welbourn (Religious Studies) and Professor Kenneth Ingham (History). As a graduate student my work concentrated on the interaction between religion and society. My M.A. was on new religious movements in Britain centred on the town of Glastonbury. My doctorate dealt with the origins of apartheid as an ideology, Afrikaner Nationalism, and neo-Calvinism as contemporary religious movements. Since completing graduate work I have continued research into new religions in Africa, Europe and North America.

For over 40 years, the Churches of Scientology and their members have involved themselves in actively solving the problems of society...
Opening its doors on 18 February, 1954, the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles began as a thinly-staffed group who, nevertheless, wanted to deliver L. Ron Hubbard's life-changing technology to others and help him achieve the goal of a new civilization. As word about the miracle results of Hubbard's technology spread, and as his organizational policy was issued and implemented, the Los Angeles church grew. It moved to larger and larger facilities to accommodate its growing congregation.
The LA Church moved to larger quarters in December, 1962,
at 2005 West 9th Street, where it was located until 1978.
In 1965, the Los Angeles church expanded into two organizations: the "Los Angeles Day Organization," and the "Los Angeles Foundation." Los Angeles Day Organization was also charged with the responsibility of being the senior Scientology organization serving Scientologists throughout the western United States. The Foundation organization was given its own role of servicing the workaday world of local LA.
