Visit David's web page for some more recent information on a variety of subjects 21 March 2002 The Church of Scientology is at it again. They're telling Google to remove links to Xenu.net Google has caved in to their demands, and in view of what happens to those who defy Scientology, I can't blame them. At the same time, I am newly re-energized and angry. I wonder how many people are too. So Google, you really should remove all the spammed Scientology pages from your listings, pronto. That would be perfectly legal and would put Scientology in a worse position than it was in before they pulled this. [9 May 2000] This is a page I haven't updated in years. It's here more for its historical value than anything else. However, I recently came upon some interesting links about the Church's use of CyberSitter, a well-known Internet filtering program with a particularly nasty past. Here's an interesting story on the filtering issue, and here are some tips on how to defeat the filter

You'd expect Scientologists to be spacey and intense. You might not expect them to make such a bad movie. By Mark Bazer The folks at the Church of Scientology really blew it. They couldn't have asked for a better person to recruit than me. I am a lonely, girlfriendless, insecure, boyfriendless, emotionally unstable, clinically depressed, acne-ridden, small-penised, bed-wetting-prone, physically unattractive pile of nothing with a bit of a gut going, who styles himself a writer, but always writes run-on sentences, and repeats words in his sentences. I am also a huge movie fan. So you can imagine my excitement when I walked out of Newbury Comics the other day after picking up the new issue of Aquaman and got handed a free ticket to the film Orientation , playing at the Church of Scientology. The ticket didn't mention who was in the movie, though I figured it starred John Travolta, partly because he's a Scientologist, but mostly because I couldn't think of a movie that's come out lately that he hasn't been in. Add a potential love interest in Kelly Preston, supporting roles from Tom Cruise, Anne Archer, and Nicole Kidman, and a funky soundtrack by jazz musician Chick Corea and Shaft -man Isaac Hayes, and we're talking a virtual shoo-in for an Oscar.

Spiritual leader or sci-fi con artist? Our summer of Tom Cruise's madness and Katie Holmes' creepy path toward zombie bridedom has been a useful reminder of how truly strange Scientology is. By now those interested in the Cruise-Holmes saga may be passingly familiar with the church's creation myth, in which an evil, intergalactic warlord named Xenu kidnaps billions of alien life forms, chains them near Earth's volcanoes, and blows them up with nuclear weapons. Strange as Scientology's pseudo-theology may be, though, it's not as entertaining as the life story of the church's founder, L. Ron Hubbard. To hear his disciples tell it, Hubbard, who died in 1986, was the subject of "universal acclaim" and one of the greatest men who ever lived. Not only did he devise the church's founding theory of Dianetics, which promises to free mankind of psychological trauma, he was a source of wisdom about everything from jazz music to nuclear physics. The official Web site dedicated to his life features subsites that expound upon his brilliant callings: "The Humanitarian," "The Philosopher," "The Writer," "The Artist," "The Poet/Lyricist," "The Music Maker," "The Yachtsman," and "Adventurer/Explorer: Daring Deeds and Unknown Realms." Visitors can hear an

Science or New Age Cult?*
Scientology, officially known as The Church of Scientology , was founded in 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard (1912-1986), and popularized through his 1950 book, DIANETICS: The Modern Science of Mental Health (over ten million copies sold). Dianetics was originally intended to be Hubbard's psychotherapeutic answer to the techniques of modern psychiatry . (The word "Dianetics" means "through the soul," and promises to reveal "the single source of all man's insanities, psychosomatic illnesses, and neuroses.") In addition to Dianetics , Scientology produces scores of other publications. A short list includes Source The Delphian Advance! , and The Auditor The history of Scientology actually begins much earlier than 1953. Hubbard had become a well known science fiction writer in the 1930s. In fact, some of his ideas which are "common to Scientology first appeared in his 1938 manuscript titled Excalibur " ( Kingdom of the Cults , p. 345), more than a decade before its official founding. Wild claims have been made about Hubbard's earlier life by Scientology publications. For example, they have claimed that he "graduated in civil engineering from George Washington University as a nuclear physicist, although the university records show that he attended for two short years, during the second of which he was on academic probation, and failed physics. Hubbard's Ph.D. was said to be from a Sequoia University in California, although there is no proof of the existence of any accredited institution in California by that name that grants doctorates" (

Scientology
General Information Scientology is a religious movement based on the teachings of the American writer and visionary L Ron Hubbard (1911 - 86). Hubbard won prominence with his book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health (1950), in which he outlined a form of therapy (Dianetics) for curing emotional and psychosomatic illnesses and enhancing life. Subjects were trained by auditors (therapists) to increase the power of the analytical (conscious) mind and subdue the influence of "engrams" (painful impressions of past experiences) that confuse the "reactive," or unconscious, mind. Hubbard's work took on a religious dimension with the publication of Science of Survival (1951), which explained the religious philosophy of Scientology. The Church of Scientology, founded in 1954, has an estimated 8 million members in more than 70 countries. BELIEVE

A device called an E - meter is used to guide individuals during auditing and help them to locate precise areas of spiritual difficulty. The church has been the subject of much controversy. Real problems with a fictional movie
By STEVE PERSALL
published August 24, 2001
Peter D. Alexander, The Profit director. Peter D. Alexander believes he's doing a public service with his film The Profit. For the Church of Scientology, The Profit is just a nuisance. Moviegoers can see for themselves beginning tonight. Alexander's work of fiction, based on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, begins an exclusive run at Clearwater Cinema Cafe at the corner of U.S. 19 and Sunset Point Road. Alexander declares his movie to be a warning against the influence of religious cults. It's the story of a charismatic opportunist named L. Conrad Powers, who bears a close resemblance to Hubbard. Powers creates the Church of Scientific Spiritualism in the image of Scientology as projected by decades of media coverage and courtroom disputes. Ask Alexander if The Profit is based on Scientology, and he'll offer coy denials. Answering yes could make him vulnerable to the Church of Scientology's legal machine, yet he can't resist steering a questioner and moviegoers to that conclusion. He's stretching the liberty of fiction to its limit. The Profit is a rant against Hubbard and Scientology, no matter how many cults the filmmakers claim to have researched and incorporated into the story. Their feelings about the church are unmistakable on screen and in conversations.

When computers are seized because they contain allegedly stolen intellectual property, or the security of anonymous remailers is pierced by police, alt.scientology.war the days of the Internet as a cozy, private, intellectual cocktail party are over.
Welcome to mortal combat between two alien cultures - a flame war with real bullets. The raiding party says he'll have his equipment back by Monday. Weeks later, he's still waiting. Lerma is not the first. In February, similar raids were staged on Dennis Erlich in Glendale, California, and on anon.penet.fi, an anonymous remailer run by Johan Helsingius in Finland. Then more - on Tuesday, August 22, 1995. This time it's two raids. The target is FactNet, an anticult electronic library and archive based in Golden, Colorado. One raid is on FactNet chair - and former Scientologist - Lawrence Wollersheim, the unpaid winner of a multimillion-dollar suit against the church. The other is on FactNet director Bob Penny. FactNet has been expecting a raid since early spring, and it long ago told Internet users to download as much of its archives as possible. There are now FactNet anti-Scientology kits on websites all over the world. With netters everywhere able to cut and paste them, transmit and download them, they become more and more difficult to track down. It would take a lot of international cooperation and a lot of police power to get them all.
