General Leslie R. Groves
The Manhattan Project extended far beyond the fences surrounding Los Alamos. By 1945, the massive Hanford plant in Washington State was beginning to produce plutonium. In Tennessee, the Oak Ridge facility had come on-line after months of struggle and was preparing uranium for shipment to Los Alamos. At the center of the entire operation stood a single man, General Leslie R. Groves.
Groves was born in 1896 in Albany, New York. His father, an Army chaplain, instilled many virtues in his son from early on, including a sense of duty to self, family, and country. He encouraged his children to compete with their peers and even each other in an effort to attain general excellence. His efforts paid off handsomely. Groves eventually won acceptance to West Point and graduated in 1918, fourth in his class. With his strong background in general science and engineering, Groves chose to pursue a career in the prestigious Corps of Engineers.
After graduating from West Point, Groves served with the engineers in Hawaii, Texas, Delaware, Vermont, and even Nicaragua. He attended the Command and General Staff School and later the War College. Groves accumulated an impeccable record during the 1930s, in the field as well as in the classroom. With only one exception, he received outstanding efficiency reports. This led to his appointment as Assistant Chief of the Quartermaster Corps' Construction Division in 1941. At this post, Groves was charged to rebuild the country's munitions industry. He forged alliances with major companies such as Du Pont and Monsanto Chemicals. Because of the success he achieved in this massive project, he was assigned to oversee the construction of the War Department's new headquarters, the Pentagon.

Day One – 21 June 2005
Keynote Session: Math-Based Design and Engineering at General Motors
Larry Burns In addition to driving innovation into today's vehicles, Larry is championing GM's “reinvention” of the automobile around promising new technologies like fuel cells and drive-by-wire systems. The goal is to realize sustainable mobility with vehicles that are affordable and aspirational. This is the key to providing the freedom benefits of “automobility” to significantly more of the world's population than the 12 percent who own vehicles today – without compromising future generations. Larry holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He also has a master's degree in engineering/public policy from the University of Michigan and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University).

NASA's Deep Impact Tells a Tale of the Comet
Data from Deep Impact's instruments indicate an immense cloud of fine powdery material was released when the probe slammed into the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 at about 10 kilometers per second (6.3 miles per second or 23,000 miles per hour). The cloud indicated the comet is covered in the powdery stuff. The Deep Impact science team continues to wade through gigabytes of data collected during the July 4 encounter with the comet measuring 5-kilometers-wide by 11-kilometers-long (about 3-miles-wide by 7-miles-long).

COLLECTIONS POLICY STATEMENTS
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, CHAPTER B: SCIENCE, GENERAL (Subclass Q and selected portions of Z)
Contents
I. Scope
II. Research strengths
III. General policy and collecting intensity levels I. Scope
This section of the Collections Policy Statement on Science and Technology covers the subclass Q (Science, General) and applicable subclasses of Class Z . The Library's collections in this class encompass nearly 44,000 titles. In addition, some of the numerous abstracting and indexing services, catalogs of other scientific libraries, specialized bibliographies, and finding aids for general science are classed in Z, those relating to the role of science in the developments of civilization are classed in CB, and those relating to the telecommunication aspect of information theory are classed in TK5101+ II. Research Strengths
The Library's collections in general science are particularly strong in the history of science, scientific exploration, the lives and contributions of scientists, and the role of science in society. For a discussion on collecting guidelines in the history of science, please consult Chapter A, History of Science and History of Technology Another area of distinction in the Library's general science collections is its holdings of materials summarizing the contributions of scientists to the community of knowledge. This multi-faceted/multi-formatted collection of biographical materials recording the scientific accomplishments, achievements, and the personal and public lives of scientists is vast and covers all periods of science from classical antiquity to modern times. While book-length biographies, autobiographies, and membership directories are usually classed by subject, collected biographies, those appearing in the publications of scientific societies, institutions, and organizations, and biographical memoirs are generally classed in Q. Also classed in Q are the chronologies, milestones and landmarks of science, most of which are directly tied to the triumphs, conquests, and achievements of a single scientist or groups of scientists.
