After all these years I don't see me dropping the site, but I seem to have hit a plateau recently and I'm wondering how to kick start things again. Search engine traffic has dived lately and the remaining traffic, while steady is not growing. Equally important is the lack of comments or feedback on most of my posts. A Profile of Bram Stoker Award-winning Author
    Edo van Belkom
    by Robert J. Sawyer
I wrote the following profile of Edo van Belkom for the Program Book of the 1997 World Horror Convention, at which Edo was Toastmaster. A slightly revised version appeared as the introduction to Edo's 1998 short-story collection Death Drives a Semi First, the name: Edo. It rhymes with Laredo. Second, the man: he's thirty-four, bearded, a Torontonian by birth, of mixed Dutch and Italian descent. Edo's degree is in Creative Writing from Toronto's York University, and there's an irony in that: he is the most practical, down-to-earth wordsmith I've ever met. His constant challenging of classmates' opinions in his final workshop course (most often by exclaiming, "That's not the way it works in the real world!") made him less than popular. And, of course, it comes full circle. Edo now teaches three different writing courses in and around Toronto, does online tutoring in fiction writing, and this fall will be lecturing at the University of Toronto. What distinguishes Edo's writing courses from most others (including the ones he himself once took) is his no-bull, sales-oriented approach.

    Tesseracts 6
    Introduction
    by Robert J. Sawyer
Tesseracts 6 is the sixth in an ongoing series of anthologies of Canadian science fiction and fantasy, published by Tesseract Books of Edmonton. Robert J. Sawyer and Carolyn Clink edited Tesseracts 6 , which was published in December 1997. What follows is the introduction that appeared at the front of that volume. My wife Carolyn Clink and I first met in 1975 in our high-school science-fiction club. Back then, we tried to come up with some Canadian content for the club to discuss, but although what did exist was of high quality, there was precious little of it. The prominent American editor Judith Merril Survival Ship and Other Stories , in 1973. Phyllis Gotlieb was the only major SF writer in Canada.

It was established as the research library of the Science Fiction Foundation , created in 1970 by George Hay with Arthur C. Clarke and Ursula Le Guin as patrons. It has been built up over the years thanks to the generosity of writers, publishers and fans and is well established as the most important centre for study and research in science fiction within the UK. The Main objectives of the Foundation were:
    • To provide research facilities for anyone wishing to study science fiction. To investigate and promote the usefulness of science fiction in education. To disseminate information about science fiction. To promote a discriminating understanding of the nature of science fiction.

science fiction vs. horror. So why categorize? Why might it be beneficial to I find fantasy harder to write than realistic fiction. (Peter Dickinson)

Fantasy and Science Fiction Fantasy booktalks:
Get into three groups. Each groups is given one of the genres of speculative fiction. They brainstorm the types of characters and scenarios which might appear in their genres
    Fantasy Science Fiction Horror
Have them present their list to the class. Ask others to add any characters or scenarios they can come up with.
What do these lists tell you about the genres? What do they show about speculative fiction in general?
    Types of Fantasy:
Animal Toy Eccentric Characters Extraordinary Worlds ...
    Evaluating Modern Fantasy

    vs. Modern fairy tales
    vs. Science Fiction
    vs. Horror

So why categorize? Why might it be beneficial to talk with students about the distinctions between these genres and subgenres? What might some of the drawbacks be to emphasizing distinctions? Do books fit these categories? Literature Circles First discussion The argument is often made that fantasy comes from the same realm of the imagination as folklore and myth. Discuss this issue. Think of the novels read for last week and the novels read for this week. What do they have in common? (characters? themes? the types of speculation?...) When does a story leave the realm of the "traditional" and become fantasy?

he folks at know there's more to their subgenre than Princess Leia saying "I love you" and Han Solo replying "I know" before being encased in carbonite. Those new to the genre should check out the site's "Features" section, which includes a six-book list entitled "Romantic Fiction 101" designed to introduce people to romantic SF (it would've been nice if these books were linked directly to reviews). The section also holds a handful of interviews with genre authors. By far the site's strongest offering is its reviews section. It lists dozens upon dozens of authors, and easily more than 100 books. Each book entry notes which of the site's contributors liked and disliked it, as well as short reviews by the self-same moderators. It would be nice if the section had a search feature, but it's still useful as is.
