Classification of
Science Fiction, Fantasy,
and Horror 4.7: CLASSIFICATION OF SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY, AND HORROR I. OBJECTIVE Please use this policy to classify works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror in PZ 4, separately from other works of literature in the LC schedule. This includes works about these genres. Authors who write exclusively in one or more of these genres should be classified here. Judgment about authors who also write in other genres is made on a case by case basis, whether to class all their writings in PZ 4, to class all of them in the regular LC number (P-PT), or to split their works, putting science fiction, fantasy, or horror in PZ 4 and other writings in the regular LC number. These decisions should be recorded in the author's authority record(s), which should be converted to "local" records so they won't be overlaid during the authorities outsourcing process (see instructions at Section 2.4.4

A to Z Help Subject Guides: Literature Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature Throughout this guide, the abbreviation “SF” refers to the term “Science Fiction”. When approaching any reference work, patrons are always encouraged to read the “preface”, “Introduction”, “How to Use This Book”, etc., sections before actually using the book. These sections will usually answer questions regarding content, coverage, and basic organization for each work. Bibliographies and Guides Reference Guide to Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. Burgess, Michael. Englewood, Colo.: Libraries Unlimited, 1992.
CALL NUMBER: Z 5917 S36 B87 1992 (Reference)
This guide is an impressive undertaking and covers a wide range of reference materials. Books (and other materials) are grouped in sections by type then listed alphabetically by main entry. Each Entry is numbered and provides bibliographical data, a description of the book’s organization, content, purpose, and a critical evaluation of the work. The various indexes refer to entry numbers. This is the best guide to secondary sources in SF and Fantasy. Science Fiction Research Bibliography
A Bibliography of Science Fiction Secondary Materials in Holland Library, Washington State University If you are doing research on science fiction, this bibliography is a good place to start. It is not a complete bibliography of SF research, only of that in the WSU library; and the call numbers may not match those in other libraries. It does not include works of science fiction as such. The items marked with an asterisk are those my own students should consult first when doing their research assignments. REFERENCE WORKS: Look for reference works and indexes first in the Reference Room, not in the regular stacks. Encyclopedias and general checklists: *Barron, Neil: Anatomy of Wonder 4: A Critical Guide to Science Fiction. (fourth edition) PN3433.8 .A63x 1995
This is among the most important standard reference works in the field, summarizing hundreds of pieces of fiction. It is especially strong on foreign SF, though this coverage was reduced in the fourth edition. Recommended especially for small libraries. The still-useful second (PN3433.5 .A6x) and third editions (HolRef PN3433.8 .A63x 1987) are also in the collection. Bleiler, Everett F.:

Distributed in the UK by Trigon Press. The last few years have seen a proliferation of reference books devoted to the fantastic genres. In second editions of major works, Richard Bleiler has updated his father Everett’s 1982 book of the same title, while Neil Barron has fused and revamped his previous reader’s guides, Fantasy Literature and Horror Literature (both published by Garland Press in 1990). Though the two books offer valuable revisions, they also have their problems; yet they are considerably superior to similar efforts by Robert Sabella and Roger Shepard.

So why categorize? Why might it be beneficial to talk with students about the distinctions between these genres and subgenres? What might some of the drawbacks be to emphasizing distinctions? Do books fit these categories? Literature Circles First discussion The argument is often made that fantasy comes from the same realm of the imagination as folklore and myth. Discuss this issue. Think of the novels read for last week and the novels read for this week. What do they have in common? (characters? themes? the types of speculation?...) When does a story leave the realm of the "traditional" and become fantasy?

Reference materials provide quick answers on a variety of subjects. The UNF Library's Reference Collection should have specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks for nearly any subject you want to cover. The following materials are particularly useful for gathering information on science fiction and fantasy. You should also use the library's catalog to search for more specific areas. For example, if you are looking into women science fiction writers, try looking for the keywords "women" and "science fiction " in the WebLUIS advanced search screen. You can also limit the search to the Reference Collection by choosing Reference from the Location pull-down option.
