COLLECTION ANALYSIS PROJECTS
Alternative Sexuality in Science Fiction,
Description of Project:
The contents of Uranian Worlds: A Guide to Alternative Sexuality in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror
Analysis of Project:
The bibliography consists primarily of fiction, but there are scattered inclusions of poems and plays. It includes short works (e.g., stories and novellas) found in periodicals and anthologies as well as full-length novels in a broadly-conceived category of science fiction, fantasy fiction, and horror fiction. It includes works originally written in English (American, British, or otherwise) and translations into English. Although this account does not therefore properly belong under section II (twentieth-century American literature) of this series of collection analysis projects, well over half the works cited appear to be by American writers and were written in this century. A small percentage (perhaps 10%) of the works cited could be classified as erotica or even pornography. As fantasy often takes on an erotic dimension, this is not unexpected. The KU Libraries has not traditionally collected erotica or pornography extensively, especially in periodical format. Thus, it is to be expected that our holdings will be lower for this project than for others that have examined our collections in sf and gay/lesbian literature. A total of 927 works are cited by the authors. (Eight secondary sources are omitted from the analysis.) The Libraries owns approximately 409 of these, or

AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK
ANDERSON, POUL. Vault of the Ages
Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company. 1952 First edition. Author's first book. Color dust jacket illustration by Paul Orban. Famous black-and-white illustrated endpapers by Alex Schomburg. Tips of dust jacket's flaps clipped (not effecting the "$2.00" price on the dust jacket's front flap). A little bit of publisher's rubbing to bottom of spine and to lower edge of dust jacket's cover, otherwise fine in fine dust jacket, and the finest copy we have ever seen. (Fine is our highest grade.)
