Program Overview
Attempting to reveal the truth of existence through the dangling cables the Machine God has encircled you with? Are you a social outcast? Do you chew on rusty metal? How about shiny metal? Then we may be for you. The Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror in Literature Program (Sci-Fi) provides a venue to discuss these three literary genres in an informed group. Members select novels and short stories in these areas for the program as a whole to read. These stories are then discussed at program meetings for their content, literary style, enjoyability, and deeper meaning. Films in these genres are also discussed and watched, as there is a Sci-Fi movie night at least once a month. Role-Playing games are also a big part of the social atmosphere of Sci-Fi, and efforts are made to introduce this recreation to those that are unfamiliar with it and are interested. The program related reading is a significant part of the program, and participation is based on this heavily.

http://www.geocities.com/canadian_sf/pages/author.htm
Made in Canada is the proud recipient of the 2000 Prix Aurora Award for Fan Achievement: Other! Over the last 44 years Canada has enjoyed an amazing growth of Fantastic Literature writers. In 1959 Phyllis Gotleib was Canada's only regularly published SF author. Since then the list has grown to the Authors listed in this guide plus many that I've missed. The term "Canadian Fantastic Literature" covers the genres science fiction, fantasy and horror. In Canada it is quite common for science fiction authors to also write fantasy or for fantasy authors to also write horror. It is also common for Canadian mainstream authors to write a fantastic story or two without fear of being labeled a genre author. In fact some of Canada's most distinguished authors, like Margaret Atwood Robertson Davies and Timothy Findlay have crossed the border to the fantastic on occasion. Because of these facts, I have veered slightly from my Science Fiction theme and have included fantasy and horror authors in this guide. A quick note for any published fantastic literature authors reading this guide: If you are not listed and would like to be or if you are listed and would like to add to, correct or delete anything I've written, please use Email me at

The African American Science Fiction Character in Literature, Television, and Film by Ben Davis Jr. (8. Mar 2004) The work is intended as a literary article based on my master's thesis that focused on the works of Octavia Estelle Butler and from a faculty symposium on the sci-fi genre as mythology. This article functions as a kind of survey into how Black characters in science fiction literature, television, and film have grown and have been handled in the pop culture medium over the decades. Sometimes the character is grossly stereotyped or tokenized, deemed unimportant only to serve as "fodder" or is under-appreciated, and how that character is treated as human and not so much as "the other." Purpose of this list: My purpose is to attempt to list every doctoral dissertation, masters thesis, and baccalaureate/senior/honors thesis dealing with science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural, and utopian/dystopian literature and media of which I become aware. Lists attempting to list 'everything' of something are doomed to a certain level of incompleteness, but the attempt is part of the fun of doing it.
Arrangement of this list: This list is arranged in a simple A-Z listing by the authors surnames. The information provided:
  • Date or year of the degree; Author Name; Title of the thesis/dissertation; Institution which gave the degree; the Country, or the Country-State/Province for U.S. and Canadian institutions; the Department in which the degree was earned, if known; and reference to the Dissertation Abstracts International or Masters Abstracts International volume and page, if known, where an abstract may be found.
