Frequently Asked Questions
  • What exactly is certification? What subjects can I become certified to teach? What if I don't intend to stay in New York? If I graduate from another college or university, can I complete the master's degree in one year? ... Is funding available?
  • What exactly is certification?
To become a public school teacher in New York State you have to complete a course of study that includes your subject, educational theory, and student teaching. After that you take three New York State Teacher Certification Exams (NYSTCE) that test general knowledge: 1. The Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), teaching methodologies 2. The Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W) 3. The Content Specialty Test (tests content knowledge) When you pass those tests you are granted a initial certificate. (100% of Cornell students who take those certification tests pass them.) If you teach for at least two of the next three years, and have a master's degree, you earn professional, lifetime certification. For further information, please visit:

TIMSS Overview and Key Findings Across Grade Levels
W ith information on a half-million students worldwide, including more than 33,000 U.S. students in more than 500 U.S. public and private schools, the recent Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the largest, most comprehensive, and most rigorous international study of schools and students ever conducted. Students from 41 nations, including our country's major trading partners, were tested at three different grade levels (fourth, eighth, and in the final year of secondary school) to compare their mathematics and science achievement. TIMSS researchers also looked at schools, curricula, instruction, lessons, textbooks, policy issues, and the lives of teachers and students to understand the educational context in which mathematics and science learning take place. By combining multiple methodologies and scientific sampling procedures that go beyond simple student test score comparisons and questionnaires, TIMSS created a fair and comprehensive portrait of how U.S. mathematics and science education differs from that of other nations. The richness of TIMSS includes a videotape study of eighth grade mathematics teaching, which observed 231 typical classrooms in Japan, Germany, and the United States, and an analysis of 1500 textbooks and curriculum frameworks from about 50 countries. At the fourth grade, U.S. students were near the first in the world in science, and were above the international average in mathematics. In the eighth grade, U.S. students scored slightly above the international average in science and below the international average in mathematics. By the twelfth grade, U.S. performance was significantly lower relative to the international average in both science and mathematics, even among our most advanced students.

PROGRAMS IN EDUCATION The teaching profession is a noble one, and Brigham Young University – Idaho is committed to providing excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue teaching certificates. Because we are located in Idaho, we will adhere to the Certification Standards set by the state of Idaho. However, an Idaho Teaching Certificate is valid in 42 other states. Within the next few years, BYU-Idaho will begin offering three distinct teaching certificates: Early Childhood/Special Education (which allows a teacher to work with children from birth through 3rd grade) Elementary Education (for Kindergarten through 8th grade) Secondary Education (for 6th through 12th grade) During the 2001-2002 academic year, we will begin by phasing in the Elementary and some of the Secondary Education programs. Early Childhood/Special Education will not be offered for several years. Students wishing to major in Early Childhood Education will need to transfer to another university to complete a Bachelor’s Degree. While at BYU-Idaho, lower division courses may be taken from the Family Science Department. Consult with an advisor there. Elementary Education (a Bachelor of Science degree) is an exciting and challenging major. In addition to the information found in this “Education” section, students interested in an Elementary Certificate (K-8) will want to read the “General Education” and “Elementary Education” sections of this catalog.

The Department has as its vision to be recognized internationally as one of the 25 leading academic chemical engineering departments in the U.S. by the turn of the century. We plan to fulfill this vision through innovative education, well-trained graduates, quality research, respected faculty, and leadership involving societal and industrial problems as they relate to chemical engineering.
Our undergraduate education mission is to teach chemical engineering principles and their application in an inspired learning environment and to prepare students for chemical engineering careers. In so doing, we will develop in our students the capability to think critically and analytically, to communicate their thoughts clearly, and to conduct themselves in a professional manner. We will achieve this mission by maintaining our high teaching standards, by applying chemical engineering principles to new areas, by maintaining and expanding high quality laboratory experience, and by adapting the curriculum to incorporate emphases on the environment, process safety, and hazardous waste minimization.
Our mission in the graduate education area is to prepare advanced engineers for industrial and academic careers by helping them develop creative and critical thinking skills and by training them in the most advanced technologies and methods employed in chemical engineering. In the area of research, the Department will develop basic knowledge into technology in selected areas of social and scientific significance. To fulfill the graduate education and research missions, we are promoting more creativity and independence in research, providing more practice in communication, and exploring ways to provide more laboratory and experimental research experiences.
