Selection of applicants for the Faculty of Education is highly competitive and is based primarily on academic standing for the Junior Intermediate and Intermediate Senior programs. Primary Junior applicants will also be asked to provide proof of relevant teaching experience. Such requirements are determined annually based on the number of applications received and the spaces available in individual programs.
All applicants to the Bachelor of Education program must have a minimum cumulative average of 70% (B-) or higher. The academic average is calculated on the best thirty semester courses (not including college transfer credit) at time of application. Courses completed after August 2005 will not be used in the calculation of the average. Applicants who will have completed on honours or graduate degree by October 2005 will be given additional credit in the evaluation process. All applicants must have completed the requirements for a recognized bachelor's degree no later than August 2006, with the degree conferred no later than the fall convocation, 2006.

Alignment with National and Local Science Standards
Training students to be scientists is an excellent way for teachers to meet many of the National Science Education Standards (1996). Fundamental abilities necessary for a student to do scientific inquiry include (National Science Education Standards p. 145): Ability to identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigations Ability to design and conduct a scientific investigation Ability to use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze and interpret data Ability to develop descriptions, explanations, predictions and models using evidence Ability to think critically and logically to make the relationships between evidence and explanations
These standards correspond directly to the Washington State Science Essential Academic Learning Requirement (EALR) number 2: "the student knows and uses the skills and processes of science and technology" and the benchmarks designed to meet this requirement.

Breadth of Study in Science The overall program in the sciences is organized to assure that students meeting the requirements of the program acquire sufficient general understanding in science so that, as future teachers, they will have the necessary background to impart a high quality general scientific literacy to their students. General studies provide familiarity with the nature of science and major ideas common to all the natural sciences, including: matter and energy, mechanisms and processes of evolution, scientific models and systems, and their interactions. The program provides a foundation for students to engage in further studies of any natural science. General studies in the program familiarize all students with important societal and environmental concerns and the application of scientific principles to everyday phenomena. The Commission has established that the most commonly taught science course in California Schools grades seven through twelve is general science. To ensure that prospective teacher can teach a coordinated general science curriculum the Cal Poly Pomona subject matter programs will require all candidates to meet a standard of competency and knowledge across all four areas of science; Biology, chemistry, geosciences and physics. As a foundation upon which students can build their further science studies, each student will complete a minimum of one year of study in each of the sciences. In addition, all students complete two quarters of

Each of our science teacher education courses is designed as an introduction to current teaching and assessment strategies, as well as to relevant theoretical approaches for teaching science in the Intermediate grades (7-10) and the specific science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Science General) in the Senior grades (11-12). Although the content varies among the four teaching subjects, they all consist of interactive activities, laboratory workshops, seminars, short lectures, and student presentations. The students in our programme benefit from the diverse strengths of our faculty who are involved in research in science education, as well as experienced in the teaching profession. Upon completion of a science teacher education course, pre-service science teachers will:
  • experience and effectively design, plan and teach science lessons for intermediate and Senior Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Science General students based on Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents examine ways to integrate technology effectively into science teaching

An Archive of Web Teaching Materials
Jeff Barker, SUNY, Binghamton Several universities and agencies currently provide similar archives, particularly of geologic photos. We do not wish to duplicate these efforts. On the other hand, we would like to provide a central, stable location where professors can be assured of finding web materials at the same address, without having to search every time a course is taught. Cooperative arrangements are being worked out. Perhaps we can mirror other valuable sites; at least we can provide links to them. Some image archives are accessible only to those who have contributed, but since our purpose is to facilitate improved teaching through the use of web materials, we wish to maintain open access. Therefore we are relying on the generosity of IRIS members to contribute. The scope and usefulness of the archive will evolve as more contributions are received. You can access the archive from the IRIS homepage or the Education and Outreach page. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Jeff Barker (barker@sunquakes.geol.binghamton.edu)

Master of Library Science in Library Science, General (Concentration: School Libraries) Course Requirements Program Delivery Admissions The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies offers an NCATE-accredited Master of Library Science (MLS) degree. The MLS degree is approved by the NC Department of Public Instruction and reflects Media Coordinator (School Librarian) competencies required by the State as well as Public Librarian Certification competencies of the NC Public Librarian Certification Commission, depending on the concentration pursued by the student. The MLS program prepares graduates to provide library and information technology services in K-12 school library media centers and in public libraries. The program emphasizes the interdependency of all libraries and other types of information agencies in meeting the needs of citizens in a democratic society. Through the Office of Extension and Distance Education, the Reich College of Education provides this degree program at selected off-campus settings throughout western NC. NIU Department of Mathematical Sciences Bachelors degrees in Mathematical Sciences at NIU
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Northern Illinois University offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. These programs prepare students with diverse career goals, and develop unique strengths and talents which are valuable in an increasingly technical society. A Mathematical Sciences degree prepares students to be innovative and imaginative in complex situations - ready for a world of challenges. A mathematics degree demonstrates many obvious career skills: attention to detail, comfort with numbers and computation, and a familiarity with standard mathematical models. Less obvious are the skills which develop during the study of higher mathematics. The student develops rigorous, logical thinking, problem-solving skills, appreciation of and familiarity with complex structures and algorithms, and the ability to learn technical, detailed, or abstract material. If you would like more information about potential applications of your mathematics degree in the job market, contact an advisor in the Department, the University's Career Counseling Office, or professional societies such as the Mathematical Association of America. The MAA web site highlights varied career stories of math students; see

  • Secondary Education Careers in Education Our society demands understanding people to educate its children. Ball State University seeks out those people for this most important profession. Teaching careers look brighter and more attractive now than at any time in the last two decades. There is a strong demand for junior high/middle school, all-grade, and secondary teachers of high quality. Shortages exist in several parts of the country, especially for teachers of specific subjects such as science, mathematics, library science, and in nearly all subjects when the teacher needs to be bilingual. Teacher's pay is increasing, and professional career ladders make it possible for the most capable and energetic teachers to become lead teachers, mentors, supervisors, counselors, and administrators. Teacher education is also an excellent background for many education-related or human-service positions in business and industry, as well as many other careers. Mobility is high among younger teachers. Reciprocal agreements provide that teachers certified in Indiana are qualified to teach in their area of certification in most other states and many foreign countries. The outstanding reputation and high standards of Ball State University's teacher education programs enhance employment opportunities for our graduates throughout the
