ALERT: Special Announcements New York State has passed legislation to license master level psychology graduates as mental health counselors. The current MA in Psychology curriculum at Marist has the approval of the Council of Applied Masters Programs in Psychology (CAMPP) and is listed with the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Marist has a long history of providing a quality master's education and is uniquely positioned to provide a comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for the licensing exam. NOTE: The curriculum and the credits required for the MA in Psychology may change from that listed in order to comply with the new legislation.
Program Goals
The Master of Arts in Psychology focuses on counseling and community psychology. The goal of the program is to provide students with the relevant theory, skills, and practical experience that will enable them to perform competently in assessing individual differences, in counseling, and in planning and implementing effective individual, group, and system level interventions. Students interested in working in community settings will find a variety of opportunities for "hands-on" experience. The current MA degree requires completion of 45 credit hours. In addition to course work in assessment, counseling, and community psychology, the program provides students with a strong background in research methodology and a life-span developmental framework for understanding human behavior. Ethical behavior, stressed in all courses, is particularly emphasized in courses that train students in the utilization of psychological techniques in applied settings.

If psychology interests you, you have something in common with the ancient Greek philosophers. They asked questions about the life of the mind: What is the relationship between mind and body? How can we tell if the world is really the way we think it is? Today's psychologists study all sorts of fascinating questions, such as the following: Why is learning a language as an infant easier than as a teenager? What are the roots of violence? What is the best way to help someone with an eating disorder like anorexia?

XIII. Graduate School In Psychology
Before discussing such topics as "Applying to Graduate School", it might be helpful to give a brief summary of just what graduate school is. Graduate school is post-graduate education, taking an average of 2 years for the Master's degree and 4-5 years total for the Ph.D. ("doctoral") degree (5-6 years in clinical or counseling psychology). There are a number of significant ways in which graduate school differs from your undergraduate experience. First, the credit-hour load will be lighter in graduate school. Nine or twelve credits, rather than 15-18, per semester is a typical graduate load. You can, however, presume that each course will demand a fair amount of time. Second, you will take psychology courses almost exclusively. Third, your professors will give you more freedom, and thus increased responsibility, regarding the entire learning process ranging from completion of assigned work (no one will nag you!), selection of courses, class attendance, etc. In a phrase, you will be expected to develop into mature, independent scholars. Fourth, class sizes will be smaller. Some seminar courses will have as few as four students, in which each is expected to master a special topic and "teach" his or her fellow students. In lecture courses, the professor will often expect you to master the textbook, while he or she talks about related material. In addition, scholarly work in the library is often expected. Finally, you will probably experience a closer bond between yourself, fellow students, and your professors due to the preceding points and also to the smaller student/faculty ratio. Many people find that the tight psychological and social bonds formed in graduate school remain throughout their lives.

Programs in School Psychology
The School Psychology programs are offered in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology within the College of Education. Two programs are offered.
EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST (Ed.S.) The Educational Specialist program is a three-year program with two years of coursework on campus and a yearlong internship. In the Ed.S. Program, students typically earn a Master of Science (MS) Degree after the first year of coursework. Students with a master's degree may transfer in credit, but they must meet the same overall requirements. The Ed. S. program is fully accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE). Graduates of the Ed.S. program are eligible for certification as a school psychologist in the state of Kentucky and should meet certification standards in most other states. Program completion also partially fulfills requirements for certification as a Psychological Associate by the Kentucky Board of Psychology . The program is fully described in the Ed.S. Handbook

The faculty members have been very successful in placing students in doctoral clinical psychology programs. Students who do not wish to pursue further studies are eligible to apply for licensure in North Carolina as a psychology associate.
School psychology provides students with academic and field experiences that prepare them for employment as school psychologists in public school settings or related areas, working with children and adolescents.
Successful completion of the program will lead to recommendation for Level II licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (and similar certification in states with reciprocity). In addition, graduates are eligible for national certification by the National Association of School Psychologists and for licensure as Psychological Associates of North Carolina.

http://www.educ.msstate.edu/coun_schoolpsylab/general_information.htm
General Information
The Counseling and School Psychology Lab is a counseling and assessment center used as a training facility by the Department of Counselor Education and Educational Psychology.
History of the Counseling Lab
The original Counseling Lab began in 1967. This laboratory consisted of three observation counseling booths that were equipped with two-way mirrors and microphones allowing a supervisor to observe the current session. The content of the original session was limited to role play situations between counselors in training. No services were available to the public. In 1988, the Department of Counselor Education began the first video laboratory. This laboratory consisted of one counseling room, which provided the counselor with a video recording of the session. This allowed the counselor to receive supervision at a later date. Limited counseling services were available to the public for the first time. After the combination of the Department of Counselor Education and the Department of Educational Psychology, one need of both departments was to increase experiences in the area of counseling and assessment. The Counseling and School Psychology Laboratory is able to accomplish this goal by providing counseling experiences and assessment training to students in these areas.
