  • Is graduate school really for you? This is the most important question to ask yourself as you are thinking about applying. Graduate school is a time-consuming and expensive commitment. Make sure you talk to a lot of people and do a lot of internet research so that you know what you're getting into before you decide to apply. Graduate school can be extremely rewarding, but only if you are passionately interested in whatever it is that you are interested in studying.
  • Are there any absolute rules that you can follow to ensure that you are admitted? No. No matter what your qualifications are, it is impossible to predict with absolute certainty whether you will be admitted to certain programs or not. Obviously, better students will get more acceptance letters than poor students, but factors outside of your control are going to play a big part in where you are admitted. So keep in mind that the rest of the advice on this page includes general guidelinesthere are no guarantees.
  • What are the most important strengths that an applicant can have?

Students in both General and Clinical Psychology work closely together with faculty from both fields. The resulting interaction prepares future clinicians with a strong training in therapeutic practice while also supplying them with sophisticated research skills. It also gives students in General Psychology enough clinical background to serve them well if they seek to apply their training in practical settings. By promoting cross-fertilization between its Clinical and General Psychology programs, the Psychology department provides students with both breadth and depth of training. Some faculty members pursue experimental research; some maintain active clinical practices. The department continues the pioneering spirit of such distinguished former faculty as Leon Festinger, Jerome Bruner, Hans Wallach, Irving Rock, Kurt Goldstein, Serge Moscovici, and Solomon Asch.

General Information The M.S.Ed./Psy.D Program in School Psychology carefully integrates field experience with academic preparation. Students are trained in psychological foundations, assessment and evaluation techniques, remediation and intervention procedures, and program evaluation and research. Although research methodology and theoretical academic subjects are essential parts of the program, emphasis is placed on professional preparation in the delivery of psychological services. Graduates of the doctoral program will have completed all pre-doctoral academic and internship requirements needed to sit for the New York State Licensing Examination for the professional practice of psychology, a Master of Science in Education in School Psychology (or equivalent program in school psychology), and be recommended for a New York State Certificate of Qualification in School Psychology. Full-Time or Part-Time Study Students may undertake the program on a full- or part-time basis with the exception of the final year, when they typically devote full time to an internship. Class hours permit field work and generally allow for part-time employment in the first four years of study. Wherever possible, paid internships are arranged in order to help alleviate the financial expense involved.

Students with disabilities must notify the Coordinator of Disabled Students, prior to matriculation, regarding possible educational modifications. Program Prerequisites Students must have background preparation in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, experimental psychology, general psychology, learning, personality theory and statistics. In addition, students must have courses or show competencies in principles and problems in education and curriculum development or methods of teaching and instruction. It is desirable and strongly recommend that students have the psychology prerequisite preparation prior to entering the program; however, it is possible for students to complete some of the program prerequisites (e.g., education) after program admission. Graduate Program in School Psychology
    Mission and Objectives
Today's school psychologists must function as effective educational consultants, intervention strategists and counselors in addition to their historical role as psychometricians. Our goal is to prepare professionals who manifest a holistic blend of theory and practice in meeting the educational advantage of today's students within the interacting contexts of their schools, families and communities. At Marist College, students interested in pursuing study towards New York State certification in school psychology have two options: an MA in School Psychology or an Advanced Certificate in School Psychology. Marist's school psychology programs focus on instruction in theory and skills associated with five roles regularly encountered by a school psychologist: facilitator in understanding human behavior; counselor; psychological/educational examiner; consultant and information specialist/intervention strategist. Following New York State Educational Department (NYSED) regulations, the academic qualifications for permanent certification as a school psychologist requires sixty-two semester hours of graduate study inclusive of a college supervised practicum experience and internship in the field of school psychology. Within the total program of preparation as a school psychologist, the candidate must complete a masters degree.
